They’ve told us to stay away from the urban core on Inauguration Day, so this is a way to do so and maintain your Zen.
Reston is home to over 50 works of public art. We won’t try to see all of them, but a representative sample so you will be tempted to return on your own.
We’ll meet in front of the Starbucks at Wiehle-Reston East Station at 9am on Wednesday, January 20, 2021. From there we’ll do a 12 mile loop back to the station. If you’re “DONE” by then, you can press on your merry way. If your heart says, “No, please I need MORE art,” we can do a 10 mile loop on the other side of the toll road.
This will be a combination of quiet roads and paved trails. It will not be a FAST ride.
Everyone should wear a face covering at the beginning and end of the ride. During the ride, we’ll maintain a goodly amount of space from each other to be safe on all levels.
My rides have a “nobody gets left behind” kind of standard and I always have a sweep (well, sometimes I’m the sweep).
For those of you playing other games, we’ll pass some signs for parks as well a couple of paths that might qualify as wormholes. There might even be STEM on board.
So, if you’re coming, just let me know below!
I haven’t seen any responses, so I’m guessing there’s no one up for this. If you’re interested, you need to let me know ASAP. Otherwise, I’ll make plans to do something else on Wednesday. Thanks!

ParticipantThis is a pretty cool park. It has a fantastic soccer arena and is beautifully landscaped. Just off the northeast corner is a marker telling about this area being the home of Laura Ratcliffe, spy for the Confederacy. She saved John Mosby’s life one night by going out to tell him about Union soldiers sent out to ambush him. She was also admired by J.E.B. Stuart. Her actual grave with marker is across the Dulles Toll Road right in front of the entrance to the Washington Dulles Mariott Suites (Worldgate Center).
Right across the road from Arrowbrook Park is a lovely little pond area with a nice boardwalk. It’s delightful on warm days.

On the way to Spencer’s Safe & Lock serendipitous lightning struck. Good thing because Spencer’s moved to Sterling.

Key, Kite, or LightningIt’s pretty funny that Baldino’s keeps popping up – but different locations! This one is in Reston. Interestingly, it’s in the parking lot with Home Depot – which makes keys – so you’d think that wouldn’t be so great for business. But it’s been there for a long time!

Recycle A Bicycle predates Phoenix and their founders were very generous with not only Phoenix but other youth empowerment-through-biking programs all across the country. Very good people!

Peter Krsko Murals at Takoma/Langley Crossroads
There are three murals by DC-based muralist Peter Krsko (2 of which I had the honor of helping paint!) along alleys in a 1-block radius just southeast of where New Hampshire Ave and University Blvd intersect in Takoma Park, MD. Not a particularly bike (or pedestrian)-friendly area, but worth a gander if you get a chance.

ParticipantOn our New Deal ride today I came across this park. While I usually avoid parks and other stuff named for people, I was on a mission to do the New Deal ride and check “parkfinder” off along the way. Since the Parkfinder Master Mind was with us on the ride (and thus could see that I took the photo on the non-dog park side), I grabbed this one quickly before the other two Freezing Saddles contestants could do so.
So if you wonder who James Hunter is, this is the Arl Co writeup: James Hunter Park has a plaza terrace, open lawn, demonstration gardens, water feature and adjacent dog park (closes at 9 p.m.). The creation of an automated water management system to capture and reuse rainwater on-site and the integration of renewable solar power. The dog park is closed for maintenance on Mon., Wed. and Fri. from 10 a.m. to noon.
The park honors James B. Hunter III, an Arlington County Board member from 1990 to 1997, who is also the namesake of the James B. Hunter Human Rights Awards.

So I know that dr. evil adjusted the rules so that one does not have to include their bike in their photo. Fine. His prize; he makes the rules.
However, you also earn a point for everythat you get. So, just for the record, if you don’t include your bike in a photo that you easily could have, I won’t like it and you’ll forgo that potential point.
Cheers,

(note above photo includes both bike and smiling selfie, excellent example of one that deserves a)
(P.S. for clarification: just because you do include your bike doesn’t mean I will automatically like it, but if you do not, I definitely won’t)So…for all of us who are just glad to be on a bike and finding the thing that Drevil has asked us to find, if you don’t include your bike, I will counter balance Steve O and like your photo. Why? Because life has too many rules already and I just want to be contrary about this one. if Drevil doesn’t require it . . .

I was leading a ride of the “New Deal” sites but always keeping in mind that I needed to get a daily photograph photo. Suddenly, I veered from the course (not the first time today, but I keep telling them to “trust me”) and ran the gauntlet of the dog park crowd (oh my goodness, way too many dogs there!) and snapped this. I didn’t stop for a beer, but waited until we returned to Reston and patronized our local bike shop/brewery…but Lefty Laura will post that photo.
What I like about New District — it’s conveniently located between the Holmes Run and W&OD Trails. Very easy to get to by bike, big warehouse size space so you can social distance. The last time I was there (pre-Covid), their beer was excellent although I can’t remember what I had.

ParticipantBefore I was asked to take my bike outside (oops), I managed to snap a photo of this New Deal era “mural” of apple picking. From the descriptions, I had this image in my mind of full wall paintings. Alas, I was disappointed. But art is art.

Before I got asked to take my bike outside (oops), I managed to snap this photo in the Arlington Post Office. The New Deal era paintings are billed as “murals” but they’re quite small, up high, and not very imposing. I had a mental picture that these would be full wall sized. Kinda disappointed. This is the “mural” that depicts apple picking.
