This wormhole allows you to go under Reston Parkway east/west. Although it’s well known by people who have been here a while, the new developments have added sidewalks/paths to their frontage on Reston Parkway to get people to the crosswalks (yes, good idea). But it means that some of them will never discover this beauty which avoids that whole “do they see me in the crosswalk and will they stop” issue.

It comes out at The Container Store, so it shall now be called the “Contain THIS!” Wormhole.

Done by local elementary school students in an underpass near their school in Reston.

    1/22/2021 – Polka Dots

I took a couple of photos of different polka dots, but then we cruised by the skating rink at Reston Town Center and saw THIS!

I’m pretty sure it’s a bike helmet but hey – it works for skating too!

An art teacher friend who retired from Arlington Public Schools told me that sculpture was part of a series of sculptures done for various schools years ago. We have one in Reston too – which is a whole different school district and County!

Here’s a link to ours which will provide some info about the artist in case anyone is interested. https://publicartreston.org/project/stabile/

I had created an elaborate route to get back from Franconia-Springfield station area to Reston after a dr’s appointment so that I could grab some public art photos and an Adidas logo. But miracle of miracles, I saw this upon my entry into the business/medical campus!

Then I caught an Adidas in the wild so I was ready to blitz up the various trails to get back without my crazy detour.

But as I started the journey, I rode in front of the GSA building at the corner of Franconia-Springfield Parkway and I-95 and saw this amazing sculpture! There wasn’t any information on it, there was a scary looking fence, and a security guard not far away, so I snapped quickly and pressed on. I’ve searched on-line but haven’t found any info about it either. It’s very cool though.

    1/21/21 Adidas

I despaired that my dr’s appointment today would preclude me from spending much time securing the goal. As I waited in the clinic I scanned everyone’s shoes, pants, and jackets and ran approach lines in my head. My back up plan was to go to a running store on the bike ride home, but that was going to add 3 miles to a 30 mile day, so I wasn’t looking forward to it.

But then, as often happens, serendipity raised her head. As I was fiddling with my bike getting ready to start riding, a couple of young med techs walked outside and one was wearing Adidas! I called out, “Can I ask you something?” She nervously looked around hoping I wasn’t going to ask anything medical. “Are those Adidas? Do you mind if I take a photo? I’m doing this scavenger hunt thing by bike …”

Her face lit up, she and her friends brightened, and I snapped it. Nice to offer a moment of levity to these young people who are working so hard!

Mark your calendars if you want to join this public art ride in Reston on Saturday, Feb. 13. We will start at North Point Village Center, 1452 Reston Parkway, and ride just under 12 miles. But what a 12 miles! At two different locations there are multiple pieces, and in between are some additional stops for other cool artwork. In total, there are more than 15 works.

Social distance and mask requirements will be in place, and we don’t leave anyone behind.

I’m not going to set a start time until I see the forecast temps. Freezing Saddles doesn’t have to mean voluntary popsicle-hood!

I will also put in a thread in the main page at some point. I figure this most appeals to those playing this pointless prize game.

If you need good bike directions to the start from the W&OD or Wiehle-Reston Station, let me know.

Here is the route. No guarantees I won’t tweak it before then, especially if I find something new to add!

Sophie, there’s a guy who has done several “tree snag” art pieces in Arlington. This might be his – or there may be several artists in the DMV who do this. Lord knows there are plenty of trees! The snags are carved by chain saw after the tree has died. They deteriorate naturally over time and in the meantime provide lots of food and fodder for insects, etc. Here’s the link to the guy in Arlington: https://www.amsculptures.com/

Thanks to Serdar for coming out to the wilds of Reston giving us an opportunity to show off some of the public art south of the toll road today. While we rode we had wind, snow, and sunshine. We decided to call a halt when we got back to the W&OD so he could hide the Calvin Ball and we could thaw. We’ll do the north side another day and publicize it here for people to join.

In the meantime, these are some bike parking on the plaza at Wiehle Station. In the summertime the apartment building they’re in front of locks some pretty blue cruiser bikes to them and residents can sign out a bike to go ride on the nearby W&OD.

There is no information provided on artist or name of the piece. :-( I like the dog walker one. Now that I’m studying the other two, I think it might be a little sexist. The male figure has a briefcase. The female figure looks to have a shopping bag. Maybe it’s a laptop bag? Hmmmm

Decisions, decisions. I know I only get credit for one #publicartfinder per day but I ran across both of these today so I’m sharing both of them here so you can enjoy them. I’ve not yet found a marker or description of the winged horses piece. It’s at the Northrop Grumman building on Warp Drive (no kidding) in Sterling. You can access it from the W&OD. Check a map to find the short path just east of the Rt. 28 bridge.

Did you decide to add a bike in the pic with the horses [emoji206]?[emoji6]???

I have one, but decided to just share the beauty of the entire piece this time, but not for points, and my “points” piece was the Summer of Love. I’ll go back to Warp drive another day for a better photo with bike. We have lots of time with BAFS, ha ha

1/20/21 – The name of any president since FDR but no yard sign or car.

This was actually harder than it might seem in Reston since VDOT controls the roads so renaming a street to honor any one is an uphill battle and not one people will take on lightly.

So I had to improvise. Not photoshop, but cropped.

I wonder if I get credit for two presidents since there were two with this name?

Last call for this ride. We will meet in front of the Starbucks at Wiehle-Reston East Station at 10am. There are 3 of us I know of — give me a heads up if you’re not LeftyLaura or Serdar so we know to wait for you!

Does anyone have a good route for the Maryland/DC side of the stones? I’m looking for something fairly current. I’m happy to share my route for the SW and NW sections (although you can’t see the NW stones in VA as they’re in the back of private yards for the most part), but the route can show you how to get as close as possible. :-)
