ParticipantI call it “Tamani” as it connects the two sides of Tamani Dr in Herndon – but only for pedestrians and cyclists. It’s a nice cut through on neighborhood streets to keep you off Herndon Parkway.

Participant1/25/2021 Bubbles
This sculpture, “Simon” is in Reston and is named for Reston’s founder, Bob Simon. The sculpture is by DeWitt Godfrey, who in an artist talk about the sculpture discussed that it is representative of his study of bubbles and surface tension and how the shape and movement of one bubble affects another. He tries to capture that in steel. The entire sculpture does move, although not enough to be alarming.
I like this sculpture but I don’t like where they situated it. It’s very hemmed in by the buildings around with no room to breathe or really be appreciated. I’m sure when they first installed it, they thought it would look good, but with all the construction coming to fruition around it, not so much.

I have to object to this strategy, as it is poor gameplay at best. Last year’s winner cropped and posted 60+ rides during the last hour of the competition, and blew everyone away. I went to bed at 11pm with a ~30 park cushion on the closing BAFS2020 Eve, and woke up 30+ behind.
Good sportsmanship would dictate that you post your hashtagged rides on a daily basis, and not store them up to crop and sandbag the competition on the closing eve of #BAFS2021.
But maybe that’s just me, and my perception of fair play…

I like that perception Boomer. Also, since the purpose of BAFS is to get people out to ride daily as much as possible, one “find” per day should count for any of the pointless prizes. I like that the photo of the day requires posting that day as it not only motivates me to ride early but to get it posted. I also like that he DQ’s multiple photos. It’s a good system and seems quite fair.
But then again, this is supposed to be pointless.

I’m posting “too many photos”of this today, but it’s just really nice. Very difficult to capture in just one photo, too.

Outside the Apple Store at Reston Town Center. There is ALWAYS a line here, and usually security guards, like this one. He was cool about the photo though.

Participant1/23/21 Pie Day
My grandpa was born in 1908. He lived until 2000 and was a character all his life. He was never rich, but later in life when he had grandkids he’s spoil us to take us out for a bit of “pizza pie”. He always referred to it with both words. I’m not a fan of fruit pies, so this is my homage to him and checking the box for me.
From Andy’s Pizza in Tysons II Galleria. The security guard (who kindly said he wasn’t going to make us move our bikes to the ACTUAL bike parking b/c it was too cold) told us they’re great pizzas. I had already eaten a sandwich at Urban Plates (disappointing experience) so didn’t need pizza pie. My Surly doesn’t have that cool front rack for carrying pizza, so today was just window shopping.

I never remember to check this contest early enough. So of course on my ride break today this walks by. A day late so no points but it cracked me up so I hadda share

Nadine, I always see “more” the next day! If you ever do post on the day for points, make sure you do one of the following: Either put the header in (date) (subject) or post it as a “reply with quote” of whatever Dr. Evil posted as the subject, or it won’t count

Well played! +1POINT.( Just keep adding your extra points till the end)
I strongly urge anyone who loves rocks to make the trip to the USGS grounds and check out all the really cool massive rocks they have on display. Sadly, few are labeled with any indication of what they might be – but all invite speculation as to the vast mysteries of the ancient times! It’s not far off the W&OD in Reston. Less than a mile south!

Cool – thanks! Now this makes me want to go visit all the local schools to see what other art I can find.

I think most of them were in Arlington — we have only the 1 in Reston and it’s at Hunters Woods Elementary School, about 3 miles from the W&OD accessible via bike lanes and wide paved multi-use paths!

1/22/21 – Polka Dots
I see this car in my neighborhood all the time. It’s the first thing I thought of when the Daily Photo scavenger hunt word came out. These particular polka dots are made with coins. He parks it on the 800 block of S. Highland Street in Arlington, VA.

Just imagine if he did that to a bike — hauling all that extra coinage uphill! Yikes!

Ha ha – I did that the other day. Apparently you have to be an admin to correct that kind of error. SO silly!

ParticipantNot for points, but fun to share.
Here’s an interesting REAL wormhole. These rocks are on the grounds at USGS. There are no placards to describe the processes, time frame, etc. Fortunately, my son is a geologist so I took a photo today and sent it to him. He responded thusly:
“Probably made by some kind of ancient burrowing creature. Over time the burrows were filled with a softer or weaker sediment. Eventually the entire thing turned to rock, and when it came to the surface, erosion took away the weaker parts. Possibly made by some kind of arthropod or squid-type organism. It’s called bioturbation.”
So not exactly worms, but absent USGS putting out any information on it, I’m going to refer to this as “Wormholes revealed”. So there.

Apparently 1/22 is National Polka Dot day
On your ride, find polka dots in all its forms out there; it doesn’t have to be clothing:
Polka dot is a pattern consisting of an array of large filled circles of the same size.1/22/21 – This polka dot pattern can be found on many DC street corners.
That was one of my first photos! Great minds think alike. And then I started seeing dots everywhere! Street lights, traffic advisory signs, etc. But then finally, a ladybug! Whew!
