I enjoyed this one a lot! I got a few photos with a more Mondrian shade of blue, but this was the most fun shot:

Is this at a Ronald McDonald house? Those are such awesome facilities. I have some young friends who have been in one off and on since their son was born a year ago with many, many issues. It’s more home than their own house for now.

Earlier today I was checking out recent activity on Strava to see what people were doing. I saw crayon-scribble marks over the Mosiac parking garage and I thought, “That’s a great idea. Maybe I can go ride circles in the garage.” But then I continued to hear sets of car tires spinning out on my icy, hilly street in Falls Church and decided just to stay home.

If I hadn’t promised that errand in Falls Church, I probably would have stayed home too. But I’ve (finally) learned that when I absolutely do NOT want to ride, if I put my bike and gear in the car and take it with me, I feel so guilty about the driving part that I figure out a place to ride. As I tell my mom and my kids, ‘guilt is a powerful motivator!”

Also – you have to be careful about garage riding. At first I was thinking I’d go over to Tyson’s Corner to the mall since their parking lots are so much bigger . . . but they also have mall security and I thought I might get chased out. Fortunately, Target’s security set up is a bit less pretentious. ;-)

Wow – you guys had some very clear looking roads and sidewalks! Here in Western Fairfax I was even nervous driving my car over to Falls Church for an errand. After the errand, I needed to go to Target (sister’s bd card) so went to Mosaic. Fortunately, I had my bike and gear in the car “just in case” so I rode way too many stupid laps in the parking garage to get my sleeze miles. And as I finished, I came across this little beauty.

The blue light, the yellow box, and the actual “help” button is red. Darker red, but red nonetheless!

The Gagged Washington mural. I did not realize but it is also by Udofia the artist who painted the one on the wall of Ben’s Chili Bowl. It’s a collaboration with another artist about Washingtonians fighting to have their voices heard. I think it’s kinda neat that it is also next to the RBG mural.6b1f489ab117d29294bb6d23c838c198.jpg

Ha ha – at first I thought it was a comment on how people are ‘sorta’ wearing a mask.

For my sleaze miles I sidled up to a WMATA facility. I was pretty sure I could locate danger there. Mission accomplished.

I think I remember that one from the Bike Arlington/Phoenix Bikes treasure hunt. I seem to remember that the homeowners had it commissioned in such a way that their kids could “ride” the saddles. Get ’em in a saddle young is my advice! Any saddle!

1/30/21 – Skate Park (Bonus point if you capture someone doing a trick where their board is off the ground)
Kensington Skate Park. Recommended by many as the place where they don’t make you wear padding, which I’m not sure I would consider a recommendation.

Two problems with trying to get a photo of someone doing a trick where their board is off the ground:

1. Timing has to be perfect. Which is tough with a phone camera, because there is a second or so delay between when you press the button and when it takes the photo, which is too long. So you have to predict when this is about to happen, and press the button then.
2. When you hang around a skateboard park and take a whole lot of photos (because it takes practice to manage–see #1), you start getting pointed questions about whether one of those kids is yours, and if not, why you’re taking pictures of them. I had to engage in some hasty explanation that I was involved in a scavenger hunt, not pedophilia.

Fortunately, in the end, I got the photo (after a mere 128 tries) and did not get arrested. I’m counting that as a win.

Not getting arrested is definitely a win!

This is Luke who was at the Hyattsville Skate Park with his Dad and sister. Boomer, former skateboarder himself, coached him on how to pivot his hips so he could do a 360 and also encouraged him to “commit” to doing the trick. Luke was so excited as each time to tried he got better. By the time we left he had almost mastered the trick.

Another one I could satisfy close to home, as the Powhatan Springs skate park is just a mile from home. It was mostly kids at the park – no one in the deep bowls doing anything really exciting. Plus, I didn’t want to be a creepy old guy loitering and taking pictures of the kids skating. The closest I got to capturing any air was this kid jumping up out of a bowl.

Was this picture taken on a bike ride? _X_ Yes ___ No

I had no idea there was a skate park back there! It’s amazing what Dr. Evil has us finding/noticing around the area! Loving this quest.

I miss seeing all the parkfinder posts here. I know it’s only real if it’s on Strava, but it’s nice to come here to see the collection too.

My riding partner and I went from Trailside Park in Herndon (her photo) to Trailside Park in Ashburn (my photo) and got in some Trail Patrol miles along the way. When we got out to Belmont Ridge Rd. W&OD Trailhead, I took a photo of the finished bike parking created as an Eagle project by a local Boy Scout. Reston Bike Club provided the funds for him to execute it.

On the wall of the Herndon Art Space building. I don’t think this building will survive the impending redevelopment, so this art is temporary. The new development is supposed to have a fancy new home for Herndon Art Space, but the funky vibe of the old one will definitely be missed.

One photo is the obligatory ‘with bike’. The other is so you can see the detail of the mural. I’m not sure what the various objects along the windowsill are for, although Herndon has a very active “painted rock” community.

At the Herndon Skate Park. It’s really nice because it’s accessible for kids of all ages from the W&OD. There’s one at Lake Fairfax but that’s a bit of a challenge to get to unless you live close by, and even then, it’s hiking to get there rather than skateboarding.

This young performer was quite enterprising, inquiring how much I would be paid for the scavenger hunt photo. I think he was hoping for a percentage of profits. I’m happy to give him a percentage of pointlessness…
