ParticipantA mural at Fairfax Corner. Reminds me of when my daughter was horse-obsessed. I’m so glad she outgrew that before we did something like buy a pony!

ParticipantI thought for a while about this, wanting to do something different. There’s a street called “Rosedown” near us, but I didn’t want to do yet another street sign. Plus Ride W/GPS always pronounces it “Ross-uh-don” which was funny at first but not anymore.
Then I remembered I needed to stop in World Market for Valentine’s treats to send my kids and what do they have there but MAPS? And what do good maps have? A compass ROSE.
And then I said to myself, “If Rosa Parks wasn’t a compass helping direct the path we should follow, I’m not sure who was.”
So here it is, Compass ROSE.

2/4/21 – Rose or Rosa
Civil rights hero Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913. Because she defiantly refused to move to the back of that bus many years ago, her action has improved all of our lives.
On your ride, find either a “rose” or “Rosa”, snap a pic, and post it in this thread.
Happy hunting!

ParticipantThis high school in Sterling, VA has a very high percentage of students qualifying for free lunch (highest in Loudoun County) and a huge number of recent immigrant families (within the last 10 years so many of these students did not start their education in the US). And this virtual learning environment doesn’t encourage them to stay focused on success. Under these circumstances, I figure if the seniors are motivated enough to come to the school to paint this, we should honor it by calling it public art!

As one of these myself, I was pleased to ride out to Sterling for this word. Their memorial is lovely, but with the photo limitation, you get the word OR the memorial, so here’s the word.

I couldn’t bring myself to do the in-your-face thing other people were brave enough to do…. I snuck pictures when the owners weren’t looking … This was the prettiest dog

Brave … shameless … two sides of the same coin. And remember … POINTS! Seriously though, most dog lovers are happy to show off their pup for a photo. Unless they live near Carol Calhoun in which case, all bets are off!

The skylighting with the branches to the left almost look like another mural, a backdrop of sorts. Very nicely framed!

The word “dog”All at the dog park at Alethia Tanner park on the Met Branch Trail. I was reading recently how this relatively new park was named for Alethia Tanner who was born a slave, purchased her freedom in 1910, helped free others, and worked to establish the first school for black children in DC.
Small but important typo — she purchased her freedom in 1810, not 1910.

This was actually the third dog I saw on my ride. I had planned to go to PetSmart, knowing there were dogs going in and out of there all the time. Then half a block from my house, I saw a man walking his dog, and asked whether I could take a picture of his dog. He asked suspiciously why I wanted it, and I explained it was a scavenger hunt. He was clearly still uncomfortable, so I said, “If it’s a problem, I don’t need to.” He replied, “I’d rather you didn’t.” I didn’t want to force the issue, so I started off again toward PetSmart.A few blocks further on was a park, and there were a couple of people playing fetch with a retriever. I had to run across the park to catch up with them, but they readily allowed me to photograph their dog. The only issue was that the dog wasn’t interested in me, so it took a few tries before I could get a photo where he wasn’t looking away from me.
At that point, I could have gotten my shot with something that wouldn’t even have been a sleaze ride. But I decided that I really should get more exercise than that, so I biked another four miles or so. Then just before I reached my own driveway, I found a woman walking this one. Not only did she agree to having him photographed, but he clearly decided I might have some treats, and looked eagerly at me.
Of course, then my phone shut down, and I thought I had lost all the photographs of him. But it turned out I had lost only two of the three. Here is the remaining one.

I have two observations:
1. What are you doing riding in the daytime? That’s so not you, CV!
2. The looks more like a wolf-dog. I hope you gave him treats. He knows where you live and if he doesn’t, he can just sniff his way there to find you.I’m always entertained by your descriptions of your rides!

ParticipantI had a goal in mind, but several slushy, treacherous neighborhood streets later, I decided that the next dog I saw would be “it”. And I saw … FIVE dogs out walking their humans. The girls were delighted for their furry babies to star in a scavenger hunt photo. The dogs were indifferent.
