2/7/21 – Superb Owl (or a few alternatives)

Although Reston has many resident owls, including a pair that often hangs out in my neighborhood, pursuing them didn’t seem like a good way to get a bike ride in today – it’s more of a hiking type of thing. Instead I biked to a local bird feeder store (closed on Sunday) and peered in the window. Success!

What? Rolled? Where is that? Did it taste any different? That might be a field trip destination!

    2/6/21 – ice cream & selfie

I went to Toby’s too (I live a mile from Accordioneur [emoji16].) The selfie with ice cream thing was challenging given my lactose intolerance and sugar avoidance – but my husband was happy to help. [emoji38]

Sooooo I brought a stuff backpack on my li’l ride, got a covered cup of mint chip, first on his list, and stopped at Toby’s at the end right before the last mile to home. Good thing it’s February! [emoji38]

I couldn’t fit the name of the place into my selfie – I coulda taken the pic from the street, but I’m frankly not that comfortable leaning my bike against a wall and going that far from it. Nevermind the Arlington crime rate – I’m just not doing it. You can see the awning with the name of the place if you scroll up a bit to Accordioneur’s picture. Or lookit my Strava post from today – it’s a quax, too. [emoji16]

So nice of your husband to be so sacrificial for your ride. :-)

Of course, having planned to go to a specific park for a sign today, on my way I came across this one. So will save the other for another day!

Apparently the triceratops can’t read. He is distinctly STANDING in that forbidden zone!

    2/6/21 Ice Cream

A directive to go eat ice cream is one I’m happy to obey! Unfortunately, I can’t get the photo to flip right side up — so just imagine I was so wild with joy that I flipped out.

The place I went is called Sweet Mama’s in Fairfax. It’s just off Jermantown Road near Rt. 50. (I also spied a bakery I want to go back to try!). The flavor I got today was called “S’more”. No cone because their freezer wasn’t making the ice cream cold enough to stay on a cone.

2/5/21 – Stationary Clock or Other Time Telling Device

Another one close to home – the clock on the Post Office at Westover (22205 in Arlington). Note the “No skateboards, bicycle riding or roller skating” sign. I have a grammatical nit to pick with the writer of the sign. Why doesn’t it read “No skateboarding …” rather than “No skateboards”?

BTW, the picture was taken at 2:07 PM – the fact that the clock reads 4:35 makes a statement about the Post Office’s loose relationship with time these days.

There’s a bank clock on the way I get home when going from the Wiehle Station. They haven’t discovered DST time shifts so I *always* think I’m running an hour late. It probably explains some of my faster times for the leg between the station and my house.

That’s on my list for the next time I’m down that way. With a name like “Goat Hill” I can’t pass it up!

Stuart Road Park, although the sign is actually on Lake Newport Drive in Reston. This is one of 4 parks in Reston that are actually Fairfax County parks (Baron Cameron, North Reston, South Lakes, and this one). This is in the area of Reston on the west side of Fairfax County Parkway, north of the Toll Road.

I had a goal in mind for my public art contribution today. Rode up and snagged it, but as I continued my ride and saw how bad the W&OD still was, I turned off and went a different direction. Serendipity being what it is, I discovered this brand new bus shelter that is actually pretty! Now if they just put a bench in there …

This is Viewer for the Age of Reason by Greg Shelnutt. It’s steel and in pretty bad shape so I don’t expect it will be around much longer.

2/5/21 Stationary clock or other time telling device

This is the clocktower at the “Village Center at Dulles” but I’ll bet if you referred to the shopping center as anything but “The clocktower in Herndon” people wouldn’t have a clue. This is also the home of A-1 Cycling, our dear friends!

Thanks! The Fly 6 was the oldest model (from 2016) and the battery wasn’t lasting as long as it had, so I was thinking of replacing it anyway. But it was still a bit of a shock to get back to Bethesda Metro after my vaccine to find it missing. How rude! Then again, my mood was so good after getting the vaccine that nothing could spoil it.

I had the original Fly6 too and the battery was like yours. Our club did a group buy so I got a new one and sent the older one to my son. He rides much faster than I so his rides are much shorter – doesn’t need the battery to last as long! lol He’s at the age where it’s all about the goals, not so much about the journey.

I’m not in group 1B so I just continue to stay far away from most people and get that Vitamin D every day!

On February 5, 1924, the Greenwich Time Signal (aka the pips) was introduced; it marks the precise start of each hour.

During your ride, capture a stationary clock or other time-telling device in a photo and post here. “Stationary” means something that is affixed or doesn’t move easily, and not something like a wristwatch or phone. Wall clocks are fine.

    Happy hunting! :)

I appreciate the timeliness of this announcement (cough, cough). Seriously though – I’ve been staying up WAY too late in anticipation of the assignment. I need to get a life!

    2/4/21 – Rose or Rosa
This is actually roses or rosas, depending on whether you’re speaking English or Spanish.

Today was the first time in a long while that Freezing Saddles/the scavenger hunt wasn’t the main reason for my trip. I was biking to a rental car so I could drive to Glen Burnie for my COVID vaccine.

But that meant I was exactly the wrong end of town for all the roses I could think of (Pike and Rose, Rose Avenue, or Montrose Road). And it had already been a long day (up early, vaccine, and finding that someone had stolen my Fly 6). So I didn’t really feel like doing more riding.

Then I suddenly remembered that downtown has lots of florists. So I biked to the nearest one, Bethesda Florist. Unfortunately, while there were many other flowers out, there were no roses.

I was contemplating what to do next when an employee came out and asked if she could help. I responded, “This is really weird, but I need to take a picture of some roses.” She said, “I’m working on some right now. I’ll bring them out to you.” She did, and put them down where I could get a nice close up of them.

After I thanked her and started to leave, she said, “Good luck with whatever it is you’re doing!” Yep, with all this, she had never bothered to ask.

Very nice! So sorry about your Fly6. That’s an expensive loss! Glad you got your vaccine though!
