    Dora Kelly Hyperspace Junction

Otherwise known as Dora Kelly Nature Park, this nexus includes several useful wormholes including a dry crossing of Holmes Run. It connects Bailey’s Crossroads/Skyline, Alexandria West and Lincolnia Heights. As befits such an intense concentration of spatial anomalies, there is a strong gravity well. So you will need good brakes for the approach and good climbing legs (or a granny gear) to escape.

As one whose name is Kelley and who gets it spelled incorrectly a LOT, I was thrilled to discover Dora Kelley Nature Park. So in Dora’s interest, and knowing that she probably received the same misspelling treatment, I beg all to remember that extra “E” …

I’ve not posted wormholes for a bit because so many of them have been covered with ice or snow. And now they’re mudpits. But today was beautiful (compared to the last two or three) so I ventured forth to one of my favorites. It’s in Herndon and allows you to avoid a lot of Elden Street traffic. Because it goes off the end of Nash St, I’m calling it Nashole (also because it leads to the middle school and a name like this would crack my middle schoolers up)

A nice little park in Herndon off Van Buren Street in the area which, once the Metro Phase II opens, and traffic returns to normal patterns (Please God, don’t let it do that) will become even more dangerous than it is now. Marked 25mph, this little two lane stretch which is a cutover to the W&OD, seems to be a magnet for impatient drivers. Unfortunately, there’s no real wormhole through the park that might help one avoid some of the trauma. So … if you’re doing to ride along this stretch, put your big kid panties on and TAKE THE LANE! :-0

I guess his name is Mr. Mellow Mushroom Man. I never looked at him up close before today. He’s actually quite interesting! He stands in Herndon on Elden Street.

My gearhead nephew could probably tell me what every one of those gears and cogs and other things are for. I recognize the bike chains … ha ha

I love this mural and was thinking what a nice looking bike you have…and then realized it’s a Surly. Of course it looks nice! Mine’s a Straggler. Similar bone structure. :-)

2/15/21 – St Skeletor’s Day subanagram or Human Skeleton

I knew of a nearby neighborhood that had a skeleton up LONG past the fall and winter holidays so I hoped it was still there. As I came around the corner I was thrilled because although it was next to the garage ready to be put away, it was still visible! I snapped my photo and feeling smug, went on to ride and collect a parkfinder and publicartfinder. Arrived at a DINER (of course) to meet a friend for lunch. After we chatted a while she asked about my Freezing Saddles goal for the day. I pulled up the description and my photo. She asked, “Um…that’s not a human skeleton.” Aghast, I reviewed the details and DARN IT, drevil had fiendishly restricted the skeleton to human only! Argh!!!

Fortunately, she’s very smart and asked, “Why don’t you run over to our favorite bike shop? I’m sure the bike fitter has a skeleton.” I figured it would be a spine or a knee or ankle, but I was willing to go over there anyway because
    a) it was less than a mile the opposite direction of my homeward travel and
    b) it’s a bike shop, DUH!

And sure enough, thanks to Marcy, and to master fitter Clovis and the great bike shop Green Lizard — here is my skeleton! And I still got home before it rained.

Finding a heart–actually, a lot of hearts–was not exactly a challenge on Valentine’s Day! However, there were unaccountably no goats.

Carol, I have found just the opposite out here. It’s as if the restaurants and places that ARE open aren’t decorating for anything. It was so sad to ride around looking for an ox for Lunar New Year because it highlighted how unenthusiastic the Asian restaurants were about celebrating. And today, looking for hearts, it was the same again. Makes me a bit sad.

A new park in the area of Herndon just west of Centreville Rd and as far north as you can go before you hit the Dulles Toll Road. The playground is a work of public art itself. They never had beautiful stuff like that when I was a kid! Splinters on the see-saw, iron monkey bars, and HOT slides!

I’ve ridden through this new development a number of times and thought it was very nicely curated but hadn’t seen any public art. Today I was across Centreville Rd from it at Arrowbrook Park and casually looked toward it. BOOM – saw the mural for the first time! So I mentally rerouted the end of my ride to capture it on digital for you all!

You know, the rest of that phrase involved ‘drunken men’ …

Seriously, you’re braver than I going out this morning. My driveway looked and felt like the crispy hard sugar topping of a stale piece of cake. It’s melting now, but I’m still waiting a while …

And, nice logo find. It’s a creative one!

Don’t drink the water! :-) You have a lot of parks around you there. What’s the average distance you have to ride to reach them? What is the traffic like doing so? In general, how do drivers interact with you on the road?
