2/21/21 – the round Peace symbol or the word “peace” (in any language)

On my way to a church with Peace in its name, I saw this on someone’s fence.

But how would I have known that? I don’t know her, I don’t follow her on Strava, and it was just a view from a balcony. Remember, there are some of us playing who aren’t part of the original crowd. We don’t necessarily have the intel you have.

Set now. Next time. I need to get smarter. Maybe 2022 Freezing Saddles I’ll be quicker on the uptake!

I don’t see other folks’ strava routes – just responding to her posting, “From my balcony” … if I had that view and today’s wind that we had, I would have thought twice about going out. Alas, I had to go out and discover there were no other cyclists out when I was.

Kept circling in the parking garage hoping that someone would take a Capital Bikeshare out for a spin, or another cyclist would ride by, but no such luck.

Argh – we should have coordinated better and met there. I would have been your model biker, and you mine!

Like cvcalhoun I thought this would be easy on a bridge over the W&OD trail. Ha. It was windy! and some ice/slush spots, and not many cyclists. I was happy to get this after waiting several minutes while trying to keep my bike from blowing over.

Our (Reston area) portion of the trail seems to be the last to get cleared (well, besides the part west of Smith Switch). The people who normally ride through Reston/Herndon on a Saturday were doing Zwift today, I think! If enough bike commuters depended on it out here, that might change, but I’m not holding my breath!

Reston Rondo by Mary Ann Mears at Reston Town Center. Makes a nice bike shelter.

2/20/21 – Overhead Picture from “Such Great Heights” (+1 point for including biker)

On 2/20/1792 – The Postal Service Act, establishing the United States Post Office Department, is signed by President George Washington. 211 years later, one of my favorite albums – Give Up – was released by the band The Postal Service in 2003. On this album is a song called “Such Great Heights” and it is the theme for the photo hunt for the day.

On your ride, 229 years after the original Postal Service was created, take a creative photo from a high vantage point looking downwards, whether atop a bridge, overlook, or somewhere else that’ll give you a great overhead view. Bonus point if there is a clearly discernible biker in the photo. BTW, no selfies/danger pandas for this hunt.

    Happy hunting!

From this photo you can see the W&OD behind the trees. It looks like it’s nice and clear. And it is. Right there. So I got excited and rode down to go across to the trail and get a closer up but overhead photo. And found out that to the left, it becomes an ice rink of frozen ruts and to the right, same thing. I gingerly worked my way across the frozen section to the left to see if the next bridge area was better but duh-bridges cast shadows which means they didn’t melt enough yesterday and there’s NO melting today. Just in case there were some hardier folks out there though, I cycled back to my perch several times (love climbing up the garage ramps), but there was no cyclist to be seen. On the other hand, there are Capital Bike Share bikes in the photo, so that should count for something?

So, this is a likeness story about Saturn. The muralist in conversation with a fiber artist mused on what would be to embroider the planets throughout the universe. They began to argue so only Saturn made it to the mural. Because I included my bike, it’s teeny weeny. Search with wild abandon.

    2/19/21 – Planets Day

Found a few planet references rolling around today (roads much better early afternoon than they were Thur or this morning).
The pic that gets the nod here was spotted at the end of my ride….a playground had this gem!

All 9 planets in the solar system (assuming they still count Pluto since there are 9 orbs)
I like the artistic representation. Although after Saturn & Jupiter, I think they all look like Earth :)

I’ve been noticing playgrounds a whole lot more with this daily quest and they’ve really changed since my kids were little! Some of them are works of art in themselves. Nice find!

Outside my front door and as far as I can see are sheets of ice, so my bike is staying in the warmth and safety of the house. But today’s target has introduced an earworm that just won’t budge.

So my offering to the hunt is The Planets, Op. 32: 4. Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity by Gustav Holst which joyfully incorporates lots of jolly horn parts.

Nice music and photos, but I’m pretty sure your find has to involve a bike ride.

Publicart at Reston Town Center. Part of the Virginia LOVEWorks program – they’re putting these up all over the state.

Behind it is the Mercury Fountain, a piece of art on its own!

This is Earth. Or Earth after it is taken over by Bechtel who has turned all the oceans red. Nonetheless, planet Earth.

Perhaps I’ve misinterpreted the task, and it needs to be one of the nine planets in our solar system, and not a generic “planet”. For now at least, here’s the word and a visual representation of “planet”:

I’ll find something else if this isn’t legit.

Josh, it looks like it needs to be specific to one of our 9 (including Pluto as one) planets and drevil wants the photographer to name the planet he/she is posting. Hope this helps.
