ParticipantA feast for the art lovers today. We rode down in Manassas. My submission photo (hashtagged for Strava) was the sculpture of the children playing. But … that was just the tip of the iceberg.
There were three “LOVE” signs, two little trains that had been embellished with painting (kinda like the panda series years ago in DC) and a church steeple that was just lovely. It doesn’t look as glowing in the photo as it did to my eyes, but still, pretty. So … here are just some of the photos.

Participant2/23/21 – Mosaic (likeness or word)
Tough choices. I found a mosaic on a church while we rode in Manassas but it wasn’t very complex and the light wasn’t great. So when I got back to Reston I hopped back on my bike and rode to a local elementary school where there’s a mosaic bird bath. The mosaic was created by artist Valerie Theberge who does a lot of mosaics in the DMV (including several in Reston). This poor bird bath is in an alcove, rarely seen, and obviously no running water because it was a bird skating rink while I was there. The most surprising thing to me was that there were BUSES there today with their engines going, ready to take kids home. I’ve gotten so used to NOT seeing buses that I completely forgot what time it was when I sailed into the parking lot!
You can find out more about the piece (and other public art in Reston) here: https://publicartreston.org/project/mosaic-birdbath/

ParticipantSarah, I finally found something in a troubleshooting forum for iPhones that has helped me with getting things uploaded straight on the forum. If you imagine that the iPhone is a TV and turn it sideways, the “home” button must be on the right. Since I started doing that, I’ve had no problems – except when I did a selfie. In that case, you need to flip it to have the home button on the left. I don’t know whether this works on other phones.

I believe this is the first time I’ve actually been able to come up with an item without Googling. I had noticed this the other day as I biked by it. That was fortunate, because there are absolutely no references to it on Google.I managed it with only a sleaze ride. Which is just as well, as I also would have gotten an entry in the London Bridge contest for it if that were still being given this year. As I was turning a corner, I ran into a patch of glare ice and the wheels slid out from under me. I hit my head, both brakes released, and the wire came out of the anchor bolt on one of them. I figured that continuing on to get the photo after that was enough, without trying for more than a sleaze ride.
For anyone interested, there is a more professional photo of this (but sans bicycle) at this link.

Hope your head is okay, Carol! This is beautiful, but maybe not worth a concussion. It looks very Tiffany like. Is it in a private home?

Ok, it’s not a house, but South Arlington’s notorious and recently shuttered Purple Lounge is too purple not to submit.

I’m sure that when it was in operation there were people who pretty much lived there …

ParticipantThis is a delightful little circle that has several choices one can make in order to avoid the short stretch of panic pedaling on Sunrise Valley Dr from Reston Parkway to Colts Neck bikelanes. We discovered it today because there was so much snow piled up in what would normally be a right lane. (Even when the lane is clear of snow drivers are very aggressive through here).

Participant2/22/21 – Purple House
At the risk of losing a perfectly good pointless point, I’m going to offer the following as creative interpretation that doesn’t require photoshop:
The call was for a purple house. It did not specify that the house must be a house for humans. Thus, I offer this purple tree painted on the side of a parking garage where birds nest in the spaces.

After all, it’s just a point.
Plus, all the photos I took of houses with purple-ish shutters didn’t look purple once I got home. Purple really is in the eye of the beholder when there are HOA restrictions on color!

Not one but two purple doors in Adams Morgan.
This was a nice surprise after all the stately steel- and gray-blue doors and shutters in the tonier Kalorama.

My mom lives down on the border, and the culture there cheerfully embraces bright colors as well as thriftiness. In some neighborhoods you can see the progression of one person’t leftovers to another person’s front door to someone else’s roof trim, etc. It’s quiet delightful. I live in Reston which restricts color choices to specific ‘earth tones’ so we will bike this afternoon to a less restrictive area!

ParticipantNice to start seeing enough melting to be able to use wormholes again. I used Cathy Miller’s Kutner park wormhole today and also found one myself.
This wormhole in Fairfax allows cyclists to escape to another neighborhood and avoid having to go on Main Street.

Based on the neighborhood, I am calling this “Wormhole Rustfield”

ParticipantThanks for extending the “wrap” hunt time frame. They’re hard to come by out west of Arl/Alex. But today I was successful to snag the two in City of Fairfax. The green one is called “Rocks” and has iconic places in Fairfax on it. The other is called “Spirits Rising” and is more ethereal. There are more photos on my Strava.

ParticipantBoomer, thanks for extending this to the weekend. Wraps are a little harder to come by farther out from Arlington/Alex. The weather cleared enough for me to go on a real hunt today for the traffic box wraps in Fairfax. So here they are! The green one is called, “Rocks” and the multi-colored one is called “Spirits Rising”. Up close you can see some spirit-like figures in the latter, but they’re a bit hard to discern. More photos on my strava.
