I went looking for info on where it got its name and found this information:

Participant2/25/21 – Duck (likeness of animal or the word)
This was an easy one for people who live/ride in Reston. But I had to be in Loudoun County today, not Reston, so I decided to look there. Thirty miles later I had seen deer, mockingbirds, cardinals, WAY too many Canada geese, and even a groundhog, but no ducks. So I finished my ride and came back to Reston to embark on a second ride. As Karen posted earlier, we have a piece of public art in Reston called “Duck, Duck, Goose” that are supposed to be functional art – artistic bike racks. I was part of the committee that commissioned these pieces and lesson learned — ensure you write into the contract that the commissioning body has the authority to make the installers re-do it. The guy who installed it (not the artist) put it on a grassy area that gets muddy, pretty far away from the tennis courts or the lake house nearby, and set it up like a Mama being followed by her babies. So … It’s goose, duck, duck. And they won’t change it. sigh
I saw Karen riding away from it, so I knew it would be a duplicate, so I looked in Reston for other ducks as well. Sadly, ducks have fallen out of fashion. Probably due to Moby-Duck (story here: https://www.npr.org/2011/03/29/134923863/moby-duck-when-28-800-bath-toys-are-lost-at-sea)

I also wanted to add this…when I was a kid my dad was stationed in Japan. I spent 6-8th grade living on a base that did not have cable TV. The only TV we had in English was Sesame Street and Soul Train. When my mother was in the room, we watched Sesame Street to show what good caregivers we were with my younger brother. When she left, we switched over to the master, Don Cornelius, and danced. During this time, I learned EVERY Sesame Street song (and we even had the record albumn). So today, Ernie’s “Rubber Ducky” song was my earworm, followed closely by Oscar the Grouch singing, “I Love Trash!” If we ever get a happy hour, I will be happy to sing both of these for those of you who missed this rich cultural experience.

I went into DC today partially with the thought of getting Kingman Island, but now it’s Kingman and Heritage Islands. Alas – wouldn’t do. so instead I chose something sacred.

Better sacred than scared.

2/24/21 – “Charles and Diana” Subanagram Word
Ugh. That’ll teach me to check my photos before I ride off. When I went to pick up dinner earlier (from Thai Noy at Westover), I took a picture of my bike leaning against a HANDRAIL; however, it was dusk and my iPhone apparently was having trouble focusing in the half light, so all I got was a blur. I went back out just now and got a photo of this HANDRAIL, which was the closest one I could find to my house.
For some reason, my wife was totally freaked out that I had ridden my bike to pick up dinner from a restaurant that’s less than a mile away. Almost 32 years of marriage, and she’s still surprised when I do bikey things.
More importantly, unless he changed the rules, drevil is looking for the word, not the object. On your ride, find a subanagram word (not the object) using just the letters “Charles and Diana”. Take a snapshot, and post your one pic in the forum: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php…
There’s time to go back out. Really freak her out.

Do you think that Charles and Diana would ever eat “enchiladas”?

I think they would have if the dining table was 50 feet long and they each sat at a “short” end…

ParticipantFound this one by accident today. Allows one to continue from one part of Wolftrap Rd to the next without being harassed by Tysons area traffic. I’m calling it “Wolftrap”.
[Note: No wolves or other creatures were harmed in the documenting of this wormhole. Any morphing by users into a more lupine form is purely a coincidence and wormhole identifier is not responsible. Use of this wormhole during a full moon is at the user’s risk.]

ParticipantNo mosaics at Mosaic but plenty of public art murals. You should check it out. This is just a ‘taste’… although now I’m asking myself – what’s a mural and what’s a cool paint scheme?

I saw a CARDINAL Glen Ct while riding in search of today’s subanagram, and duly snapped the photo. But then I got to the Mosaic District and found ENCHILADAS instead.

What a glorious day to be out riding! I didn’t want to come inside to tutor and I’m pretty sure the middle schoolers won’t be that interested in being tutored either! ah well, we persevere

2/23 – Mosaic!
I no longer regularly pass near Mosaic District in Merrifield, so I decided to get a picture of a dolphin statue at a local gas station that happens to be covered in a lovely MOSAIC of pebbles. Also happy that this was literally 10 feet off my normal commute.
Breach!

Shawn, are there any actual mosaics in the mosaic district? I’m headed there tomorrow for a different reason, and would love to see some new mosaics if there area any. Also — where is this dolphin? It’s a rare and wonderful find!

Mosaic Park in the Ballston neighborhood of Arlington does not have any sign at present indicating its name, but it does have these mosaics. They are not figurative, but they do meet the definition drevil provided.
On my ride back home the westerlies were starting to blow. I was forced to take shelter at Westover Beer Garden, where I spotted some friends similarly sheltering from the wind.

And just to be contrary — the “Mosaic District” in Fairfax has the name but no mosaic works. Funny how they do have a beer garden though. That must be a standard?

“Emerge” adorns a worm hole passing beneath Glade Drive in Reston. Artist Valerie Theberge created it using small pieces of multi-colored glass and mirrors. More photos in my Strava post for the ride.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
So it WAS clear! All this and a hug from your daughter – life is sweet indeed!

It seems that mosaics are very popular at the local elementary schools. I captured a few in photos today, and decided to showcase this humongous one at University Park Elementary School. There is even a girl riding a bike in this one.
Millie – you’re right. Elementary schools love to do these in art classes, especially with artist-in-residence projects. While the art teachers get to teach all kinds of good stuff, the math teachers get to sneak in a lot of good info about proportion and math and fractions and … so it’s like eating candy that’s good for you. This is a lovely one!
