You complete me mural, part of the 51st state mural series, in an alley by Buchanan and 14th St.

Not sure if it’s too late for traffic box murals but I found one today at Logan Circle which sort of complemented the earlier mural.

I do find it rather funny that the traffic control box says, “The Fight Against the Establishment Continues”. What’s more establishment than traffic controls? lol

While in Rockville getting my Civil War sign, I spotted this one close by. What luck! My fallback was a street sign with “white” in it.
This is a story about black and white educators and a court case. I didn’t get the entire sign since I was focused in on the “black and white”

Nice one! Gibbs was one of those cases that helped set the stage for equal pay as well as a foundation for other extensions of equal rights. Thurgood Marshall was his lawyer and the case was eventually settled before ascending to the heights of precedent. But it helped Marshall work towards the end of segregation of schools. You can read more about it here: https://www.mymcmedia.org/black-history-month-mcm-spotlights-justice-thurgood-marshalls-rockville-roots/

Lovely wormhole that allows the paved path to wind through the neighborhoods and connect with Lake Anne, our historical village center. I like this one because it’s classy – so I called it CoBri (covered bridge).

2/27/21 – the words “Black” and/or “White” (any language)

After an interminable Saturday meeting, broke free at 3 and rode to Reston Town Center to take an insurance photo of the same clothing store that others have. That done, I started exploring. I remembered a yard sign that had one of the words and I was hoping it would have an additional sign to complete the pair. No joy, so I rode back to Lake Anne, Reston’s historic center and peeked into the used book shop. SCORE! Couldn’t bring my bike in (there’s barely room enough for people in there), but was able to get this photo … only to realize it’s sideways. Ah well, the words are clear. Thanks drevil for stretching my brain a bit.

There’s a group of cyclists who ride out of the Green Lizard who go by “STD’s”…swim team dads. They have jerseys proclaiming STD in BIG letters.

    BLM on the MBT

I assume that’s Black Lives Matter on the Metropolitan Branch Trail, and not the Bureau of Land Management tagging the path.

My son lives out west and in his job regularly deals with the Bureau of Land Management, so when Black Lives Matter started gaining traction as BLM, I kept having to make the mental jump to context. Similar to when everyone started using DMV for this area. I was still stuck on that slow and infuriating experience trying to get anything done connected with licenses and autos. :-)

    2/26 Acronym or initialism

Remember when this wasn’t ubiquitous? It is so much a part of the landscape now that I forget to notice it — so I was standing in the coffee shop awaiting my latte and exclaimed (too loudlyl) to my riding partner, “WIFI! I found it!” Well, duh — it’s a coffee shop with customers mostly under 30. No one would show up if it didn’t have WIFI!

Love that! Of course, there are the MAMIL’s out there (middle age male in lycra) but I’ve not seen one actually wearing the acronym, just bearing it. :-)

2/25/21 – Duck (likeness of animal or the word)

On my way back from WTFCC this morning I kept my eyes open and sure enough, a few ducks were feeding at Sparrow Pond (the little wetlands around mile 2 of the W&OD). I figured that if I didn’t see any real ducks along the way I would head to Duck Donuts, but my sighting of these mallards meant no donuts for me.

    #FSWormhole – It’s Temporary

This allows one to avoid the intersection of Temporary Road (which has been temporary since the 70’s) and North Shore. The recent addition of bike lanes has helped with the intersection, but this alternative is car free.
