3/8/21 – Notable Woman (with her achievement)

The Sheridan-Kalorama Call Box Restoration Project has restored many of the old police and fire call boxes in the neighborhood This call box piece, entitled “Women of Influence” portrays some of the residents of the neighborhood. The main figure is Madame Chiang Kai-Shek (Soong Mei-ling), the First Lady of Taiwan. She lobbied for support of the Nationalists’ efforts and, with her husband, was Time Magazine’s “Man and Wife of the Year” in 1937.

Also portrayed on this box are Eleanor Roosevelt (First Lady, civil rights leader, and United Nations delegate), Lou Henry Hoover (president of the Red Cross), and Edith Galt Wilson (First Lady and, after her husband’s stroke, controller of the White House).

What’s particularly ironic about this location of this call box is that it is directly in front of the house rented by the Kushners during the last administration. This call box was unfortunately kept from full public view behind a fence during those four years.

What a cool project – I’d never heard of it. Thanks for pointing me that direction!

    3/8/21 Notable woman/women

I found this challenge to be quite discouraging as I searched for sculptures that featured women of note. The two obvious ones in DC were Eleanor Roosevelt and Joan of Arc at Meridian Hill park. But Eleanor is at the FDR memorial – not even a memorial of her own, and Joan of Arc died in 1431 in Europe. Joan is inspirational but really — that’s the best we can do? I ended up going with some of the bravest and barrier breaking women around – military nurses. This is the Vietnam Womens Memorial. So, not a particular woman, but when I’m looking for inspiration, these badass women who just got on with their jobs and did it with excellence provide it! (Incidentally, as a military kid growing up on bases in post-Viet Nam era, the veteran nurses provided awesome medical care to young dependents who needed it. Nothing fazed them.)

I would love to, Kelley. How about meeting at the Metro Plaza next weekend?

That’s a long ride for one piece. ;-) Wait until I do the Leesburg Public Art ride.

Thanks to my riding partner, Lefty Laura, I have the goods to garnish 2 points without having to actually purchase any myself. If I’d known how bad this was going to look at the end of a ride, I might have done it differently, but there you are.

He does get into the strangest places, yes?

It was fun riding with you too! Thanks for being so patient and cheerful through ALL those pieces!

I got distracted with what I thought was “Martini” thinking, “I didn’t know there was an element named for that!” lol

3/6/2021 I’m impressed with all of the element names people are finding. Mine is Silver from the Silver Diner in Fairfax.

I thought about Silver Diner about 45 minutes after I rode past it. And then I smacked my forehead because I had spent most of the morning somewhere near the SILVER line Metro and surely could have found a sign. This is one of those that sneaks up on you!

Lovely art ride with SophieCW, Lefty Laura, Consularrider and Serdar today. This fountain isn’t on the list of items to see, but it’s right next to one that is. I don’t list it because I’m sad and embarrassed that Reston doesn’t take better care of it. It’s non-functioning and on a plaza next to what used to be the International Center (now Virginia Spine Institute). The plaza is named for Dag Hammerskjold, a great humanitarian.

Lovely art ride with Sophie CW, Serdar, Consularrider, and Lefty Laura today to see public art in Reston north of the toll road. We saw about 25 pieces and then had tacos – that’s a WIN!

Here’s one that isn’t officially on the tour but is near one that is. It’s a non-functioning fountain at what used to be the Reston International Center (which is now Virginia Spine Institute). This sits on a very sad plaza next to the building. The plaza is unkempt and decaying. Even sadder is that it’s named for Dag Hammerskjold and the state of disrepair is so disrespectful to such a great humanitarian.

    3/6/21 – Element Name

What a great art ride today with Serdar, Consularrider, SophieCW and LeftyLaura. We managed to see more than 20 works of art in Reston north of the toll road. After the ride and Zocalo Tacos, Lefty Laura and I went in search of elements.

    Here’s mine:

Excellent! Robin Butler-LeFrancois is coming out for it so if you come by Metro and see a woman with a bike – it’s probably her!

    3/6/21 – Element Name

On March 6, 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev presented the first periodic table of the elements to the Russian Chemical Society.

On your ride, find the name of one of the elements that is in the periodic table. (Only the whole name of the element, e.g., Livermorium, not LV: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_chemical_elements).

    Happy hunting!

PS – Unlike the picture, we don’t want the word “Element“, we want a specific one listed in the periodic table :)

Can the name of the element be inside another word?

    3/5/21 – Monster

I don’t want to say anything potentially disparaging myself, but other, less popular, legumes call this dancing guy a monster:

    Definitions 1b, 2a, 3, 4, & perhaps also 5 (in terms of Mr. Peanut’s advertising success).

Plus a weinermobile, a monster in and of itself.

Were they lining up for a parade or something? I’ve not seen anything like that for years! Truly a rare find!
