Spotted at the Mechanicstown Square Park in Thurmont. Mechanicstown no longer exists (it is now Thurmont), but they have a tiny little park at the intersection of Rt. 77 and Rt. 550. I was here before for the Civil War Game.
They even had a Hardy Boys mystery! I remember reading those and Nancy Drew back when I was younger and read.

No snow out there? Lucky!

Little Free Library #FSBooks

This library was fully stocked with a good variety of both children and adult books, so I liberated a book by Miss Manners, because in this day and age, I’ve discovered that MANY people need to learn a few more manners.
I’d think you would leave “Miss Manners” with a “PICK ME!!!” sticker on it!

ParticipantHere’s the link to keep track of the leaderboard for #FSBOOKS. You should bookmark it as it doesn’t show on the drop down menu.

ParticipantCold and the wind can be wicked, but no snow. I’m not missing my bar mits or my Lake boots, but I am biking in long pants now vs. last week in shorts.

ParticipantI like your photo at night with the red light reflections! I detest what they did sticking this sculpture in the middle of all that glass and concrete and steel. It loses so much of the power of the piece. Ah well …

With the construction of the Cielo Vista Branch Library, artist Patricia “Sabina” Munoz was commissioned to integrate a public art element to serve as a welcoming gateway and entrance to the library. Continuum is a spherical sculpture designed with custom Venetian tile. Inspired by the daily activities which take place at a library, Munoz designed the sculpture as a metaphorical reference to an individual’s continued interest in expanding and developing one’s knowledge. This may not qualify as a true sphere but it’s a cool enough piece that I wanted to share it.

ParticipantLFL’s are few and far between here in El Paso Texas but I used the map and found a couple to ride to today. Hoping to participate in my own game (if not to claim a prize), I reached the end of the paved road and contemplated whether continuing 2 miles would be worth it. Mind, the gravel here is not gravel but desert grunge mixed with thorns. I had already come 10 miles so two more didn’t seem to be too much. When I reached my destinations I found no LFL’s and the two facilities where they were supposedly located completely locked up tight. Peering through the fence, I couldn’t see anything that looked like a little free library. I left the book I brought in the mailbox and started back home.

A fun middle of the traffic circle sculpture (clearly not intended for personal visits). It’s called “Conexión” and is by José Octavio Cano.

ParticipantIs that open to the elements? It doesn’t look like the books have any protection! Yikes! (nice find and use of coordinates!)

ParticipantIf your book/bike loving kid ends up with you on one of these rides, I’m pretty sure the faceless cabal has extra points for junior reader/riders! Just get a part of that rider in the photo.

ParticipantPart of the joy of offering a prize is the opportunity to extend grace. When I saw the forecast up there today, I wasn’t sure ANYONE would be out riding, so you get points for that. I will “infer” the bike’s presence because why on earth would you have been out there anyway?
You can be whimsical in your recommendations for the LFL’s — that might get points. I totally get the not carrying extra stuff on rides.

ParticipantThe speed limit there is 35mph… supposedly a safer speed for vulnerable users.
Friends who have advocated for bike infrastructure in McLean have told me often how much it is than it used to be. It must have been really bad.
Why is that now people cry out, “It’s the fault of the infrastructure?” rather than, “We need speed limit enforcement”? And while I agree that poorly designed infrastructure encourages drivers to make poor choices, ultimately it’s the person operating the more dangerous vehicle who should be most on his/her toes.

Participant1/1/2022 SQUARE
So many squares to choose from today, but I finally picked this one once I realized the blue field of stars on the US Flag is actually a rectangle.

This is a universal symbol to help at risk youth know where they’re welcome and will be safe. I remember growing up with the Fallout Shelter symbols on buildings. This is much better. Learn more at https://www.nationalsafeplace.org/what-is-safe-place
