Participant1/8/23 The 70’s
When I was a kid and living in Japan, hello kitty was brand new. It was the only time in my life that I was on trend.

ParticipantAnd I was lamenting that they were skipping the 80’s because that was such a great artifact for 1989 — the year the people took the wall down. I was stationed in Germany at the time and it was wild!

Participant1/7/23 The 90’s
My kids were born in the 90’s and one of the iconic toys from that period was a series called, ‘Rescue Heroes”. My son had quite a few of them but they were passed on to other kids as he got older. My mom still has one at her house for him to play with. (At age 26!)
Billy Blazes was the firefighter – and this photo represents he and all of his colleagues who are truly Rescue Heroes.

ParticipantOnly for my dear friend My would I take a selfie…and for the Scavenger Hunt, of course.
But having ridden there, it was only right to make the sacrifice and EAT ice cream. The store clerk was pretty lonely today, so I justified it that way. However, after telling my husband yesterday I’d already had my “lunch” of lava cake so there would be no dinner … today I took it easy on calories and will be fixing something adult for dinner.

ParticipantAfter consultation with my non-resident geologist son and some pretty poor photos, he concluded that this formation came from magma, which is underground lava. It’s really frustrating to go to the USGS Rock Garden to try to follow their website list. Some of the rocks have empty plaques in front of them, some have plaques with a very different description on the website.
Conceding the lava cake photo to LeftyLaura (but I ate my fair share), here’s (formerly) lava
Sorry if it’s sideways. I forgot about the inability of technologies to play together nicely.

Participant1/4/23 Snow … family
Serdar, you challenged me to make it work and I did. Even if I had to wait up until midnight to make sure it got done today before my flight tomorrow (today?) morning.

Participant1/3/23 Lantern
Rode into 20+ mph wind gusts in order to find a lantern. I had a Chinese restaurant in mind but as I poked along — voila! A beautiful (ahem) lawn ornament revealed itself! The ride back was MUCH better. And faster.

Participant1/2/23 Ice
When you’re in the desert, ice can be hard to find. But … penguins for LeftyLaura.

ParticipantFound only in the FireSwamp, right? Near the ROUS’s?
Seriously though, this photo made me happy. Different, and beautiful.

Participant1/1/23 Fire
So much symbolism in this mural – but the focus is on the fire of liberty’s torch, held by this woman. It’s on the side of the building housing Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center in El Paso. Notice that the torch crown looks like barbed wire. Notice the tools held by the arms below to the right, the constellation in the upper right, the two groups of people to the left, the Virgin Mary icon on the pocket, and the rolled up sleeve of a work shirt. Definitely one of my favorite murals in El Paso. Three sides of this building have murals. The one on the front is painted by local muralist, Jesus “Cimi” Alvarado, and this figure is also his style but I can’t confirm that he painted it.

ParticipantI was reading quickly yesterday and saw this as “Friends of BAFS Stickers” and got a little bit excited about ordering a sticker! More opportunities to be smug about riding outside in the winter.
Once I read more I thought, “life is too short to care about this!” So Slackers – be slackers. Teamers be teamers. And everyone — order your stickers ASAP!

Thank you everyone for playing! I think we underestimated how many of the LFL’s are out there — what richness in our landscape!
(And if someone else wants to run the LFL prize next year, let me know. I have an idea for something different . . . )
YAY for BOOKS and BIKES!
