I was trying to avoid adding yet another app … but that seems to have done the trick. Mine’s a 13 as well. But I do think the issue is with the forum.

1/18/23 Pooh and 100 acre woods

This little piglet will eventually go to market. In the meantime, he sleeps peacefully in the hundred acre woods. And he really is a piglet, only 2 months old. And compared to his mama who is in a pen nearby, he is just a little squeaker!

Mine is an iPhone. Last year my older iPhone wouldn’t play nicely with Tapatalk at all. Maybe I’ll give it another try. What’s frustrating is that up to just recently, it was doing it fine. I think it’s a bug in the forum. But thank you for guessing along with us!

    1/18/23 Winnie the Pooh

I risked my life biking to Frying Pan Park’s Kidwell Farm. The piglet I took a photo of is small (compared to his mama, trust me), pink (even without the heat lamp) and oh so cute, albeit a bit smelly.

    1/17/23 Prohibition

Reston’s brief flirtation with the time after Prohibition was lifted is represented by this sad and derelict building, the former Bowman Distillery, makers of Virginia Gentleman whiskey. It is mere steps from the W&OD (at Old Reston Ave), but no one can figure out how to preserve/develop it because there’s no room for car parking. No one is convinced that something catering to trail users would work.

    National Hat Day

Laurie – I love this! I was actually tempted to bike over to the predominantly Black church near my house around “getting out” time to see fabulous hats, but I thought it might be a bit disrespectful so I didn’t. But I knew very well where the BEST hats were on a Sunday morning! You both look beautiful!

1/16/23 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Something related to the legacy of Dr. King … well how about over 100 volunteers showing up and collecting over 100 bags of trash on the W&OD. I was there repping for Friends of W&OD as well as Trail Patrol (along with Lefty Laura, my ride buddy). I love how so many families were doing this together, some with really little kids (including one baby in a front sling!)

By the way, for $20 a year you can be a member of Friends of the W&OD which provides porta-potties, mutt-mitts, the Trail Patrol supplies and any other amenities that the park’s budget doesn’t provide. Have you gotten $20 of enjoyment from the trail? Of course you have! Go to http://www.wodfriends.org!

    01/15/23 National Hat Day

This cutie’s mama was so proud of him that she was thrilled. I was sharing his photo. I didn’t have the heart to say I was only interested in the hat.

1/14/2023 National Dress Up Your Pet Day

We rode down to Vienna thinking we’d see all kinds of dressed up dogs because of the cold. We were wrong. And cold. So we went to a fantastic independent local bookstore and got photos of animals wearing clothing. This little stuffed cat was so cute in her baggy orange sweater.

Next time you’re in Vienna, stop by Bards Alley at 110 Church St. NW (near the Caffe Amouri). Wonderful little treasure trove of goodness.

    1/12/23 The 30’s

Serdar told me to post this retroactively because of all the problems with the connections to the forum yesterday. I was just trying to amuse him, but maybe it will amuse someone else.

In the theme of “TOYS” (my theme within the theme), the 30’s were a big time for children, particularly boys, to enjoy model railroading. We even have a set in our basement from my father in law’s childhood.

So in a shameless ploy to amuse Serdar, I went to his favorite location on the W&OD to imitate his famous recurring photo. I had to wrangle a couple of nearby teenage boys to take the photo. That in itself was a hoot. “What’s a scavenger hunt?”

    1/13/2023 The 20’s

The last in my series within the series — TOYS

The best toy EVER of ALL TIME was finally designed and marketed specifically for kids in the 1920’s. This mural in Leesburg is a great way to see a throwback to the earlier designs. On a side note, if you’d like to see this mural (and the other public art in Leesburg), none of it is far from the W&OD. This one is in the north end of the Town Garage (Market St entry). If you’d like a route to see the Leesburg art, contact me at westenhoff at gmail and I’ll send it to you. Heck, if you want some routes for Reston for the same thing (way more public art here), ask me for those as well!

    1/11/2023 The 40’s

Tonka toys, started in 1940. In the 1980s (that you skipped) I briefly temped for their maquiladora on the border. To this day, I love me a good, hard-working construction vehicle! My secret fantasy birthday gift is to have my own bulldozer. And permission to use it wherever I choose.🤣

I’m Kelley, (a/k/a Kbikeva or Kelley West). I’m on the W&OD Trail Patrol so I get a lot of miles in that way. That said, out where I live, they don’t clear the trail so if the weather leaves white stuff on the ground, I’ve been known to go ride in a parking garage. There will be a couple of days in March when I’m a prisoner of the airlines for a necessary trip, so I hope to not let you all down, but I do know there are 3 days I won’t have the opportunity to ride.

Also, I use Strava only when I’m participating in Freezing Saddles, so if you follow me, it will be very sad after March 20.

My goal is 10 miles a day. Every day. Except the above mentioned days.

    1/10/2023 The 50’s

Again with the toys, I decided to ride down to Fairfax to a billiards parlor to find a representation of a toy born in the 1950s. I wasn’t alive then but I can verify that during the 60s and 70s we made all of our important decisions based on — The Magic 8 Ball!

A very nice gentleman was racking up, but was kind enough to hold up the representation of the miracle Oracle!

    1/9/23 60’s

Continuing my theme of toys, when I was a kid, all the cool kids had the new game, “Mousetrap“! This sculpture at the Reston town center always makes me think of the game. It’s called Buoyant Force.
