My errand was to plant the last official Calvin Ball in play, specifically Calvin Ball – Donut Ball (for some reason). I even added a tasty and healthy treat.

This was like 3 years ago, right???!

It is currently hidden at Pierce Mill as pictured in the photo. I put a piece of wood over it to hide it a little better. I’ll also post more photos on my ride that may help you find it.

My idea was that, if someone gets it tomorrow, they could hide it in a Little Free Library. After that it could move to somewhere with license plates, and finally it might be replanted on Friday for Calvin Ball. Just a thought! Be creative.

You’re looking for this log.

Very clever! I wondered what had happened to Calvin Ball this year. I’ve never played b/c it has always stayed way too far from my usual riding area and in past years when the weather was actually winter, I didn’t ride that far from home. But I liked watching it bounce around. I hope someone who is playing this game gets it!

I couldn’t find the house I was looking for but this one going up is kinda different, with that blue room sticking out on the side . (It’s also near where I thought the other one would be so [emoji848])

I only had one errand in mind, which was to go pick up both crystallized and fresh ginger for a cake. Went into Wegmans, picked up what I needed, and rode home. It was so beautiful in the woods behind my house. When I saw the snow drops I decided to try to be artistic with my photo. For the first one, I had the snow drops in the foreground and the bike in the background with the gingers on a log in front of the bike.

I didn’t like the photo, so I carefully picked up the crystallized ginger and the piece of fresh ginger and tucked them in the top of my open pannier. Next I repositioned the bike. Put the jacket down for back drop, put the crystallized ginger down for effect and . . . no fresh ginger. Dug through the pannier. No fresh ginger. It had apparently leapt for freedom.

Now when the forest floor is covered with leaves in all different shades of brown it is very difficult to find a piece of ginger-colored ginger in the leaves. Fortunately, it was a beautiful day, and I could casually look like I was enjoying the sunshine while I tried to find the elusive quarry.

20 minutes later, I finally found it. Another person walked by looking at me as if I were crazy and I mumbled something about “artistic photo.” I’m pretty sure she was smirking as she continued on her way. Now that I look at it, the bike and the snow drops are nice, but the ginger looks like it’s flipping me off. Nonetheless, it was a beautiful warm day and I had a lot of fun.

If you want to see the perfectly camouflaged ginger, check out my Strava feed.

You did say “unique”. This is the shopping center that has one of my favorite bike stores in it. It might look at home in Bavaria, but even there, I think it would just be over the top.

Maybe minimal traditional? This structure was built in 1957. I think the metal window frames and cubist look make it interesting.a13cda437f210b7161281a9723234789.jpg

2/11/23 Kids on bikes

I thought I had my photo, but I got a late afternoon plea from a grandma who wanted to give her grandson the opportunity to learn while she had him for the weekend. Family circumstances the kid comes from aren’t good so grandma went and bought him a bike, bought him a helmet, and brought him to me. The kid was a natural and within 30 minutes he was riding. This is the moment when he really “got it.”

On this day in 1962, Francis Gary Powers was exchanged for convicted Soviet spy Rudolf Abel . The exchange occurred at the Glienicke bridge, known as the “Bridge of Spies“. Since I could not bike to Berlin today, I settled for another bridge. Considering it is surrounded by some of the highest level tech, defense contracting, and cyber security firms in the world, this bridge might be seeing its own espionage going on. But bridges don’t talk.

2/8/23 John Williams Film music

After riding 20 miles only to find an anti-climactic “Jurassic Park“ candidate, I rode back to my own neighborhood. Arriving there, I was disappointed to discover that the 9 3/4 sign was missing from this Harry Potter themed little free library (Sadly, the vandals took the door as well.)

Nonetheless, I could at least evoke, “The Book Thief“.

Interesting trivia. Even the White House website lists him as Ulysses S. Grant, which was the name he went by his entire life. Not a clerical error, though, it seems.

We have a lot of mostly useless West Point trivia around here. My husband (74) and his father (42) grads of same. We even have an old Monopoly West Point version! I’ll have to look if it has Grant on it. Didn’t think about that before.

I had just finished goofing around to get a photo with a life ring at the lake representing “Help” when I turned around and saw this little one reaching up for her grandma’s hand. What else could I do but get a photo for, “I Want to Hold Your Hand”

2/6/23 Battle of Fort Henry

• This is a sign of Joyce Street
• James Joyce is famous for writing Ulysses
• Ulysses is the first name of Ulysses S. Grant
• Ulysses S. Grant was the brigadier general who won the battle for the Union
• Note the intersection with 19th Street
• The Civil War, during which the Battle of Fort Henry was fought, occurred in the 19th century

This is hilarious. But … his first name wasn’t Ulysses. It was his middle name. His first name was Hiram. It was changed through a clerical error. So his monogram would have been HUG, which wouldn’t have been the *best* choice to see on battlefield trunks…lol

2/6/23 Battle of Fort Henry
I took the photo deliberately facing west, because Tennessee is west of here, which is where the Civil War battle of Fort Henry occurred with Grant leading the union forces to victory. The Revolutionary War battle of fort Henry was also west of here in what is now West Virginia.
