Pausing at Carolina Bros. in the middle of my trail patrol duties to put my feet up and illustrate the SUSIE word. Finally learned how to use the self timer on my phone camera!

This huge old tree in the Woodend Nature Sanctuary (formerly Audubon) is a my picture of timelessness. And, in a two for one, meeting up with a friend I haven’t seen for a long time and enjoying a lovely ride is my idea of timeless! Thanks, Vanitha!

Participant2/20/23 Manic Monday
I decided to go with something unique to the 80s and special to our local area. As local bike shops are gobbled up by big corporations, we have to hang onto the ones that are truly community shops. One of my favorites is a A-1, their first shop opened in 1980, and during the lock-down, bike shop activity could best be described as, “manic”. This is Jake, the Herndon location’s top mechanic. Super nice guy and the opposite of manic.

Thankful for all the trail work at Camp Tamarancho, trails were in great shape!
Looks like they need someone to “clean up” the signage as well.

There are many signs like this along the W&OD, and truly the trail is generally remarkably clean of trash — at least the section that I ride.Since you asked (well, not really, but I’m answering anyway). This program is currently being updated. There are about 6 sections that will be open for adoption. Adoption doesn’t cost money, but rather a minimum 2 year commitment that your organization will get out and clean up the trash on the trail at least 4 times per year. One of the sections that doesn’t have a current adopter but desperately needs cleanup is in Sterling near Ruritan Road. Rather than wait until it gets adopted (we’re working on that) The Friends of the W&OD is sponsoring and participating in a clean up there tomorrow (Monday, Feb 20) starting at 9 am and finishing at noon. NovaParks provides the trashbags, grabbers, and safety vests. If you’d like to join us, we will welcome you enthusiastically. Kbikeva & Leftylaura will be there with swag, coffee and donuts.

One form of sustainability (re-use) – leaving the remnants of this log home in place and building the senior retirement home around it. It stabilizes the ruins and gives the residents a lovely piece of history around which to gather when the weather is nice.

Participant2/17/23 Calvinball
The first rule of Calvinball is that there are no rules. Following that lead, I wanted to take a bright green water bottle, representing the Calvinball along on my ride. Calvin, the cardinal insisted on going along as it’s guardian.
As serious reenactors, they tried various places to emulate past Calvinball hides. You can see those on my Strava. When we got home, I let them choose their favorite.

ParticipantI rode 15 miles in five different parking garages looking at license plates. I found several California plates but nothing farther than that. So I dove back into the rain to get home and stopped 10 feet short of my husband‘s license plate and took a photo. When I got in the house, I consulted my very knowledgeable geographer (Ph.D daughter) and similarly brilliant geologist (son) as well as my local math expert (husband). All are map, globe and atlas geeks. After some discussion about which assumptions to make in their calculations, they all came up with about the same answer. Using the GPS coordinates of my husband’s license plate, if you go around the Earth in a line it is approximately 19,371 miles so therefore, I win! (he’s not worried about anyone seeing his license plate. He goes on the toll road every day.)
I do want to say that Reston town Center has an extraordinarily high concentration of vanity license plates. I think the Commonwealth must need to raise the price on those things!

2/16/2023 License plate
Question regarding interpretation here: Does a diplomatic license plate count as being from the country of its owners or from Washington, DC? (It doesn’t really belong to any particular state, but it was presumably issued by a Washington, DC agency.) Because the “FM” on this one indicates Libya. But if the Powers That Be don’t think this qualifies as Libya, I will replace it with one from California, taken on the same ride.Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk

Are you in Virginia Land or Mary Land? Initially, I was going to put it up in one of the parks near Lake Artemis, but I also wanted to do some Hains Point laps and continue to recover from Covid and my fall and not go too far. I still went a bit further than was probably best, but at least it was slow.
I am out in Reston. But don’t worry about it getting out here, I have fun watching it.
