Rcannon going for the win by playing the puppy card!

And one from a bit further afield but that so captures the beauty of winter riding:

I’ll play. This winter has given us many, many good photo ops. I’ve got two photos for consideration which I’ll post separately:

First up, our own lovely W&OD after a snow (note taken DURING the freezing saddles competition).

Just remember that studded tires aren’t going to make any difference in eight inches of wet, sloppy snow.

Quick, lets start a run on fat bikes!

Cyndi, Your baby needs a bath! How do you ever get it clean after this?!

Garden hose with a very, very light spray followed by chain cleaning and lube. Bike actually looks pretty shiny and clean again this morning.

A funny aside was that much of that mud on the bike was FROZEN mud and it just kind of flaked off. Also makes me really appreciate that the Viaje has full cable housing on the brakes and shifters.

W&OD to custis had just enough spots of lightly dusted snow to be fun, but not enough to be dangerous. It’ll make a little noise, but it won’t take you down.

I love the fact that Shawn leaves for work about 1 to 1.5 hours before me, takes the same route, and then reports on trail conditions. I get up to the minute information before walking out the door. Most excellent service Shawn!

And how can I help it if my office just happens to be 1.2 miles via CABI from Foggy Bottom!

Eric Strasser … what he did last year was simply phenomenal.
Chris Ragsdale … riding a Volagi.
Bill Woodruff … personal friend of mine who rode it years ago.

Last year the RAAM site had great video coverage. Its fun to watch the live tracking.

I am choosing to not think about winter 2015. I’m just hoping to survive the winter of 2014 to experience that glorious thing known as SPRING!

I just had a notice that REI Baileys is holding a talk on cycling the GAP/C&O hosted by the Adventure Cycling Association. I’m guessing it is a bit of a sales pitch to take the organized ACA trip but they still might present some useful info for those of us who want to ride it on our own. Details on their events calendar.

    Oh enwizzened peanut gallery-

Riding the GAP, coming from Pitts on the first day, Ohiopyle is @ mile 72. Which would seem like a good place to stop, I’ll be riding with riders that are maybe not as strong as some others. Considering the lack of choices in Ohiopyle, is it worth it to stretch the day out and ride 11 miles to Confluence, which is larger and would offer maybe nicer food and lodging choices.

Considering a 10 mph pace, plus breaks, we’re talking about a 9-10 hour day in the saddle. After the one long day, the rest of the days would be 60-65 miles ea.

Personally, I think that would be pushing it and probably not how you want to kick off a trip with “maybe not so strong” riders. And as mstone pointed out just getting out of Pittsburgh can take a fair amount of time.

I’d aim for making day 1 short as opposed to long and with that in mind just go as far as Connellsville. That is a sizable town with several B&Bs and restaurants options.

I’m glad everyone had fun with this one. At times the competition was pretty cut throat with defensive dislikes, and clandestine photos in the dark. I didn’t have any idea how long it would take, but was surprised once we got going how quick it actually was. I admire your creativity, and your desire to go a little out of your way to teach us something. I also enjoyed when we were thinking the same thing without communicating, and then racing to get the same photo, missing each other by mere minutes. And most of all, I’m glad that this was a good diversion from the daily cold, icy, windy, dark slog through the set of Disney’s Frozen.

I LOVED this side challenge. I learned more about the presidents than I had since 7th grade history; thoroughly enjoyed plotting, um I mean researching, how to beat others to a specific spot; and whiled away hours of work time checking the forum for updates. Thanks Mikey!
