ParticipantEast Capitol St. and the Pennsylvania Ave. cycletracks in fine shape. Nothing but a few slushy spots through the Capitol grounds.

ParticipantGreat retrospective! Following @DCTrails was my primary motive for joining Twitter.

ParticipantBeach Dr. smooth sailing.
Georgetown Branch trail pretty icy and slushy.
15th St Cycletrack all clear.
Met Branch plowed, salted(!) and clear. In other news, anyone know where to get a decent hot cocoa in Montgomery County?!

ParticipantGlad to hear the W&OD is plowed, I’m pleasantly surprised! Thinking about heading out there mid-morning – touring bike, fenders, Schwalbe Marathon tires. Am I crazy?
Any word on conditions on W&OD west of the Arlington line?

ParticipantWe need a term for riders who blare 5 bajillion-lumen headlights on strobe while on the trail, and don’t shield it from oncoming cyclists. Any ideas?

ParticipantI saw a half-dozen or so riders on the PA Ave bike lanes this morning. One guy going eastbound was wearing shorts too – crazy.
Also saw my Bob as usual on East Capitol.

ParticipantAnother vote here for SPD cleats and those Shimano A530 reversible pedals. Their versatility is fantastic.
Being able to walk around normally with cleats is non-negotiable for me – into grocery stores, etc., so the recessed SPD cleat is key. Being able to ride with non-cleat shoes is also critical – for a work meeting, into a nice restaurant, sandals when it’s hot out, etc. In start-stop downtown traffic, unclipping and using the flats is really useful.
Keep us posted on how it works for you!!

ParticipantI seem to like downtown DC and environs. Arlington is mostly trails.

ParticipantJopamora – your interstate CaBi routes have been equally motivating!

ParticipantGood motivation to ride 11 extra miles!

ParticipantMy phone is my tracker. I now use Strava.
After using Cyclemeter for 1.5 years, I recently switched to Strava (prompted by Freezing Saddles) and really like it so far. CycleMeter was great at tracking my progress, but Strava adds the ability to see and talk about other people’s rides – which I find both inspirational and a great way to learn about new routes around the city.

What I propose is that each team come up with an official Pointless Prize, to be awarded – presented – imposed – inflicted – at the final happy hour. The Pointless Prizes should be for various massive achievements as creatively concocted as possible.
This is brilliant. Some ideas to get started, some more pointless than others…
Most Gratuitously Circuitous Commute: to the rider with the biggest difference between miles the trip would take if you went directly, vs. what you actually rode. Applies only to one-way rides.
The Waco Kid: the rider who rediscovers their youth and increases their riding the most as a result of this competition (vs. what they put down for Nov-Dec)
Earliest Bird: most miles/rides ridden before dawn (after midnight)
Latest Owl: most miles/rides ridden after sunset (before midnight)
Drowned Rat: most miles/rides ridden while it was raining
Most Trivial Objective at the End of a Ride (“I’m just headed from Takoma to Old Town to pick up a pack of jelly beans!”)
Lili von Shtupp’s Wed Wose: most creative and/or loudest song sung while riding. Cold bike singing staves off the cold, I think. Bonus points for changing Rs to Ws.
Christmas-iest Tree: the brightest, most reflective, and most ludicrous bike lights and reflective gear. (To be dimmed and/or pointed away from oncoming cyclists on trails, of course)
Weekday Warrior: most miles/rides on weekdays
Weekend Warrior: most miles/rides on weekends
Mongo: most bulky/heavy/ridiculous thing carried by bike. (Dirt would need his own category here)

ParticipantGreat seeing and meeting so many of you out there today – think I managed to ride with Mr. T in DC, BicycleBug, Crystal B, Arlington Rider, Greenbelt, Rod Smith, Rudi, and Bilsko. Good way to start off the competition!
Also, EJWillis62 if you commute up from the bridge to Oxon Hill Rd, I am seriously impressed! Rode it for the first time today – it’s a heck of a climb.

Apparently there’s a bug where every time I rerun the scoring program without deleting the cache, Justin Antos’s score increases. Edit: I think this is fixed now.
I’m new to Strava and have been uploading tons of older 2012 rides from CycleMeter over the past couple of days. Sorry – hope this didn’t mess you up too much!
