ParticipantAwesome commute this morning. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this many cyclists this late in the season.

ParticipantI wonder how many people who are against ebikes, even off road, have actually ridden one. It’s not like a motorcycle at all. It’s a bike, and having a high torque motor is not at all as simple as it sounds. High torque means high electric current to power up hills which needs extremely high discharge battery packs and controller. Not cheap or easy to build yourself. Not to mention that once you power up that hill, battery and motor are probably overheating, and how you gonna recharge in the woods? I have a lot more fun riding trails on non motorized bikes than on my ebike. Really, it’s nothing to worry about. Let’s concentrate on how bad cars are for the environment than ebikes tooling around the woods, please…

My other issue with e-bike cyclists (note, I have not voiced this on other forums so I’m not one of the aforementioned trolls) is that they tend from my experience to be people who have just jumped into this and have very low levels of situational awareness and motor control when on the bike. They have skipped the steps that most of us take, where we build power, conditioning, and control (over years, typically), and instead have just lept right to ELITE speeds but without any of the experience that accompanies it. So in that respect I often find them dangerous – fast moving, uncontrolled objects.
FWIW, from my experience I have the opposite opinion. Most e-bikers I know are VERY experienced and have more control than the normal cyclist. I, for example, do not want to be the jerk on the ebike who kills someone. I’ve also put a lot of work and money into my bike so I can ride it everyday, hence I am very careful while riding. Take a close look at the typical cabby rider. Now those people are dangerous!

ParticipantI never ride my ebike on the CCT but if I lived in that area and it was the safest way to get to work, I would do it. I have been yelled at on the W&OD while being passed by the ELITES. It’s stupid that there is a law prohibiting them on any trail or road. My commute is too far to ride a non motorized bike every day, but with a small electric motor to help I can do it every day. As someone above said – the complainers need to get over themselves. More cars and more lanes aren’t going to solve the transit problem. Yelling at people who are trying to get to work via ebike is ludicrous.

ParticipantI’m very happy they were there this morning as I almost was run over by a car turning right towards key bridge. I yelled at the driver and then she was immediately pulled over. Hopefully got s ticket.

But did you call your pass to the deer?
No, but I did say hello. She ignored me.

ParticipantMount a camera on your bike and you will not be questioned at all. Here is where they were this morning

What is the universal hand signal for “turn off the flashers, you’re on a trail and the Sun has been up for an hour”? My left hand moving in an exaggerated patting motion does not seem to be sending a clear message.
I never use the flashing front light. I always keep it on low setting but the other day some dude complained about my light. Actually he nicely asked if I would PLEASE TURN IT OFF as he was passing in the other direction. No, I’m not going to turn my light off going through falls church with all of the street crossings. Sigh I guess it’s that time of year to begin complaining about lights…

ParticipantAs a runner myself, I can’t imagine going out running “just” in the cycle track or anywhere I have to stop just about every block. That’s not running… I have seen people running along 15th street and I can imagine they are on there way to the mall, and just like I do on my bike, I hop sidewalks and try to take shortcuts (wherever it’s safe) to get where I’m going. If people really are just running in the cycle track well that’s just stupid.

ParticipantThe lines don’t always make sense. I think the Custis only has a solid center line.
