KeymasterYes, like pandering politicians, we play to the (ever-expanding) middle and while ignoring the base support that got us here.
And given my ever-expanding middle [thanks to pancakes], I wear Lycra less and less these days. You’re welcome.

How about bike to bar week. or bike to coffee week, with a week of social gatherings and teams get points for visits to the social event. Kind of like coffeeneuring or beereneuring but less Ntisocial. Put the sites throughout the metro area and you have yourself a challenge.
Yes! Yes! Yes! It is the hand-holding nature of rider encouragement that I’m going after. But Coffeeneuring works for some; Beereneuring works for others. With Pleasing Saddles, I’m hoping members of this community will create DIY recruitment initiatives over a 30-day period. Keep the ideas coming! And as PotomacCyclist says, if we get 10 regulars from here to do it, we’ve lost nothing.

KeymasterAnd based on our conversation, I’ll be on the lookout for a beater bike to loan you for a few months. I assume you’re doing the 30-day membership on CaBi, correct?

Between the fake Columbia Island Marina pit stop and Rosslyn, I passed by the bike racks at the Roosevelt Island entrance. I wondered if anyone had added them to RackSpotter yet. I took a photo just in case.
Later, I found that those racks weren’t on the map. But now they are.
Thank you for all your work on this.

Rootchopper will probably want to know that info to pass along to his co-worker.
Only speaking for myself.

A co-worker was walking down the Custis Trail near the Intersection of Doom last week. This happened:
“I have a gripe/question about the biking community in DC. This morning when I was walking from key bridge Marriott into work I passed a man giving out free high fives near the counting station that counts the bikes. He had a sign and everything. He was smiling at and offering high fives to all the bikers but nothing for a walker! I could have used a high five this morning!
does the biking community discriminate against walkers?!?!”
From my perspective the high fives were free and you get what you pay for.
I was the Smiling Man giving the Free Highs, along with my BikeArlington Colleague Erin. Early in our stint along the trail, we had a jogger do a Crazy Ivan to come across the trail to get a Free High Five and nearly caused a cyclist to crash. So we scaled back a little to not create hazards. But if we could so safely, we high-fived everybody.
I can’t speak to the situation of when your co-worker happened by, but my guess it had something to with crowded trail conditions. Since I was mostly taking pictures, the one time I handed the camera to Erin so I could do some high-fives, I know there was a steady stream of cyclists coming by.

And as final evidence:

Please let your co-worker know that we do not discriminate and will happily deliver a high-five to him/her. I will be down at Gateway Park on BtWD on May 15 and if they come by they can get TWO free high fives and maybe even a hug.
April 23, 2015 at 4:22 pm in reply to: Proposed Capital Bikeshare Locations opposed by Bluemont Civic Association – vote #1028735Henry
KeymasterI was at the meeting. The resolutions opposing the bikeshare sites were the main agenda items.
The president opened by trying to depressurize the debate a bit by announcing the BCA and Bikeshare had already agreed that a subcommittee would be established to work on alternate locations. (So yes, Arlmom please get on the committee). Some residents insisted anyway that a vote be taken as advertised to “prevent Bikeshare from coming back later and putting the stations in those locations.”
Comments were restricted to BCA members only, and for only 30-seconds each. Debate broke along 3 lines: Those opposed to bikeshare in general, those opposed to the specific locations but in support of bikeshare in principle, and those in favor of bikeshare and in favor of the specific locations. The resolutions opposing each site were voted on separately and each passed by a roughly 30-10 margin.
There is some mistrust among a few of the members about “Bikeshare” (“They can’t be trusted”), and a good bit of misunderstanding about bikeshare in general (one comment was that funding for bikeshare stations was taking away from other more important bike infrastructure).
I sense this is a good opportunity for us engage the community and get buy-in up front. They won’t review the issue again until at least September. There is a lot of support and desire for bikeshare in Bluemont and I am confident we will build on that in the coming months.

KeymasterI just want to say a huge “Thank You!” to PotomacCyclist, bobco85, and Chris Slatt, who sit atop the leaderboard and have collectively spotted 231 bike parking facilities across the county. Way to jump start the the initiative! Thanks again.

perhaps the plastic was struck with something blunt and soft surfaced like a foot? Another possibility is the glass was not installed properly and it shattered from thermal stress. Tempered glass is strong but will turn into clear aquarium gravel when over stressed at any point. it is sensitive at edges and if not mounted right can expand on a warm day or in full sun. As it expands if it presses on a sharp point in the mounting frame this could produce a point of overpressure. That can start a crack that releases the tension that is the key component of tempered glass.
Mu bet is a some punk did it.
I thought that, too, but it has been out there since Oct. 2013. Surely it would have popped by now. It wasn’t that hot on Sunday. Perhaps something happened when it was moved. Or maybe someone rammed it with their shoulder in an attempt to shake loose some products. Who knows?
FYI, the interior glass is most likely there for insulation. It’s a refrigerated machine.
Finally, I spoke with Joe at the CCBID on the phone. He had already been down to see the damage and is working on getting it fixed. For the record, the glass panels in many of the Bikeshare station map frames have been shattered, too, and are replaced Lexan when this happens.

I sent a message to the Crystal City Bid.
Thanks, Casey. I also forwarded the message to Phoenix Bikes, which had been partnering with they bid on maintaining it.
