ParticipantSo, the 14 year old me wearing sandals had 4 toenails ground off during a hard cornering fall. It. Was. Awful. Short of riding on the beach I simply can’t ride without something over my toes.

ParticipantGuy’s wife might have something to say about that…

Participant6:30 and GB and I were 15 and 16 on the counter… Really really nasty until about 7.

No idea how to rotate that…

ParticipantRULE 5 BTWD!
Heading out, GB and I are supposed to lead a ride to Tysons. Spectacularly bad idea…
Brave souls rally in Rosslyn! (and then when your convoy of first time riders doesn’t show up, come to Java Shack… bring a towel)

I am in the [small] camp that thinks Crank Bros pedals are garbage. I wouldn’t run them on MTB due to second-hand reports of them breaking on rocks. I have mashed my alloy Time Atac pedals against rocks many times without them flinching. If you haven’t committed to a pedal system, I would definitely do Shimano SPD. I don’t run these, but know that it’s what I should be doing from perspective of durability of the pedals, durability of the cleats, ubiquity of the pedals (e.g. want to swap bikes with someone? want to test ride a demo bike? etc.). Mud clearance doesn’t matter unless you’re racing, since riding muddy trails outside of a scheduled event is strongly discouraged
(And from what I hear Shimano does just fine, anyway.) I use Time Atacs which are great, but the cleats lack any side-to-side position adjustability. They are very durable, though. Have yet to wear out a set on the MTB. My experience has been that Crank Bros get sloppy (retention springs) pretty quickly, then start making horrible noises, then eventually just fall apart while you’re riding (usu. ~5000 miles or so for me — depends on conditions, etc.).
If you decide you really do want to try eggbeaters, I have a set that I will sell you cheap
I’ll take your eggbeaters. I love ’em. Also break ’em all the time but they are soooo cheap and once you break a few you end up with a nice pile of spare parts to rebuild casualties. Two benefits that Hans overlooks- 1) 4 point entry works really well (until you rip one of the cages off…) and 2) nothing but a Time offers the same level of float, I HATE SPDs, won’t ride them because of the short throw on the exit and Times, although durable like tank are also heavy like tank.
(Also Greg, didn’t I give you a pair of Eggbeaters? Hard to beat that price…)

Gold’s Gym is one block away from Ballston Mall, and they charge around $30/Month, Month-to-Month. This includes going to any of their locations, not just that one. Make sure that you inspect the showers area first if you want to join them.
I’m pretty sure that GB uses the Ballston Golds’s gym for exactly this…

ParticipantThis morning Rosslyn Custis WB- Team FeXY guy clearly out with a training client (pure awkward Fred on a sparkly new bike). Coach guy actually coaxed his client to run the red on Ft Meyer and the Custis after the guy had dutifully stopped for the signal. I know that the light is badly timed there and that lots of people run it but the client/coach non verbal exchange was soooo arrogant and Elite that it really torqued me off- “we don’t wait for lights, we are cyclists” sort of thing. If you are a professional (paid) rider, set a professional example for your clients. Please.

Another awesome group out there today: Enroute with hozn, GB and GuyContinental, and post-coffee Eastbound with Dirt and eminva. Also americancyclo, culimerc and Dickie sightings.
Missed getting snaps of rolo, dkel and rpiretti. Really need to get a picture of rolo’s octagonal helmet mirror!
Beautiful morning! Somehow we missed Dickie- definitely passed him (per the mesmerizing Strava flyby thing)- also saw Fast Friendly Guy

Which brings up the question …. when are we going to ride that again?? It was drying out nicely when I rode past yesterday.
I’d be game for some of that silliness.

That red stuff that builds up inside the top and cap of a water bottle is beneficial antiseptic mold, right?
I always thought of it as a lip-lubricant…

Don’t read the comments.
Shouldn’t have read the comments. Angry now. Must go ride to purify.
Still, I can’t say that I’m at all on-board with this guy’s confrontational approach- nothing “good” is going to come of it unless something dramatic and awful happens to him or a driver avoiding him.
As a side note he may still be alive because he’s built like a bulldog

ParticipantI had a liesurely morning- it was closer to 9:45 when I cruised through there.

ParticipantWatching that video led me to this one in NYC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JlrqgC7j18
Wow- the cyclist is pretty nuts (and really moving) but the sheer quantity craziness he encounters is staggering.
