Riding west of Gallows report (studded tires)
What was your total riding time and distance?
GB
ParticipantMy evening commute was multimodal and included a bike fix:
Office -> Bike -> Metro -> watch youtube video on how to fix rubbing disc brakes -> fix rubbing disc brakes -> Metro (continued) -> Bike -> Car -> Home

Toying with the idea of DC->Herndon (and back in the evening) tomorrow via the Custis/W&OD with the Big Dummy and studded tires.
Time/speed is mostly flexible, but I’d like it to be < 3 hours in the morning (and I'd like to be able to make it up the 2 mile hill into Vienna in the evening without sliding back down). Possible or wait till next week? B
I don’t think a fat bike with studs will notice the trail conditions. So if you’ve got the legs to push that thing that far in 3 hrs on dry pavement, you should be fine e tomorrow. Good luck, maybe pack some Advil and icy hot.

Was the W&OD from Reston east ok with slicks?
Negative. I think you’d have a really unpleasant ride on slicks between Vienna and Arlington. I was fine on 40mm studs. It was generally rough enough that regular knobies would probably be fine to for most of it, but there were a couple of glare ice patches.
Overall, similar but a little worse than Fridays conditions.

A thin sanding would work wonders on that Custis Spout Run bridge, for peds and bikes alike. Bad, bad drainage design (or total lack thereof…)
While I agree that the drainage isn’t great I don’t think sand is the answer. It will linger long after the ice is gone and destroy gears and reduce traction on the otherwise dry path.

Wasn’t the W&OD cleared between Reston and Falls Church? It looked plowed (but I wasn’t riding it).
And I find it hard to believe that 99% of W&OD riders don’t own a mountain bike
But I understand that practically speaking mountain biking through inches of snow for 2 hours to get to work is not practical.
It was plowed on Wednesday I think (definitely by Thursday morning). Unfortunately by that time enough people hand ridden/walked on it that the plow mostly scrapped the snow off the top of the ice. There were certainly bare patches but I was very happy to have studs on my tires.

Lordy, I have never seen a Jones bar on a tandem.
Yeah, because that’s the shocking part of that picture.

ParticipantDkel, I think Dismal replaced the word mass with volume because most people are used to thinking of the volume of a gas rather than it’s mass. But (AFAIK) you are correct, assuming constant volume isn’t technically correct in this hypothetical.
*edit* actually you need mass and volume to get pressure, so your both right.

ParticipantThe tire says not to exceed 70psi. I pumped it to around 60 (10 miles is pretty far at 40psi).
I actually blew out this tire when mounting it originally. I figured that was due to careless mounting. I’ll take it to a shop (FB is next to the office) and have it professionally mounted this time.
I have 100% had an MTB tire blow form over heating before. It was on the roof of the car on a hot sunny day – not the same as in the office, but then again I inflated that one on a hot sunny day.
I’d guess that MTB tires were more susceptible to this bece of there increased volume.

ParticipantFor all my morning smuggness, my tire just blew out in the office. I guess it wasn’t happy with the temperature change. Has this happened to anyone else?

ParticipantI thought you might be following that hashtag.

ParticipantI slipped while walking the dog this morning. That sealed the deal on studs for the ride in. #1morereasonhavingadogishelpful

“Goose” changes to “geese” at two. When does “place” switch to “position” and why?

Also when answering, please explain whether your answer is precise, accurate, or both and why.
Place switches to position at any time as long as it is position at 69. 70 may be place or position. This is done to humor teenage boys and *adults* who sometimes act like teenage boys. This answer is both precise and accurate because I made up the rule.
