I’m in the tower that’s attached to the mall on Glebe. They are re-doing the mall and I think better parking is in the plan, so presumably my problem will go away in 2020. One of my coworkers is renting a bike locker at the VA Sq metro. It’s about a .5 mile walk from there to our building, so doable, but farther than I’d like. I’ll check out the garages around our office for something better than the mall garage.

I don’t know why they cracked down on the bikes. It’s not my company it’s the property management group.

My office just banned us from bringing our bikes into the office, so I’m looking for secure bike parking near the ballston mall. Does anyone have suggestions?

I’m looking for something more secure than a u-lock on a regular public rack, but it doesn’t have to be full-on bike cage. I see people riding out of the National Science Foundation building. That would work well for me. Does anyone have an appropriate contact for the building/garage?

    Thanks in advance!

Hmm, if they don’t allow autos, can it still be an autobahn?

I think it becomes an auto-ban.

while a bit damp, my commute wasn’t bad until my kryptonite mount decided to slip down the seat tube in the rain and wrap itself around my right foot while I was trying to pedal through traffic on M St. Not fun. That webbing they use now seems to stretch in the rain. If I tighten it, will it compress further when it dries and crimp my aluminum frame?

    No

I agree that driver education is the problem, but I see, “bike may use the full lane” as part of the education program. I think that a couple of those on the busier (you’re gonna laugh) streets of Reston would be very helpful and significantly reduce the harassment that I get (from only a little, to none). Then keep putting those signs up on as many streets as needed until drivers just assume that there’s one on every street.

I wonder how much worse the injuries would have been if they’d both been on steel. That frame must have absorbed a lot of energy when it broke. And there would have significantly more energy flying around if the bike s were steel.

+1 for getting 650 wheels if you get a small or medium frame. I have medium with 29er wheels and I kinda feel perched up there.

Biggest downside I see to the 650s is the wheel and tire selection.

I’ve got 105 clips on my road bike and SPD clips on my MTB. The shoes I have for both are nearing the end of their lives (I mean are in great condition if I sell them). Is there a recommendation for a do it all clip system? Or is there a road system and a MTB system for a reason and I should stick with that?

Those rotors you are using are boldly minimal!

Yes. They got good reviews and were reasonablely priced. I’ll post a review after I’ve put some miles on them.

OK so there were 2 issues.

    1. I was told the rotors were 160 front and back, but actually they are 160 front and 140 back. No big deal, I now have a spare front rotor.

    2. The hanger frame alignment was off and the rear wheel didn’t fit. Fortunately the hanger was removable as people suggested and my small hex wrench got it off. The wheel didn’t fit in the frame dropout without the hanger either so everything got a very light filing and now it fits! Hopefully the alignment is right, it looks true and I didn’t file much so I think it’ll be OK.

Dismal and I were discussing some of the periodically recurring threads that have been extensively litigated here on the forum by folks who largely have fairly well-calcified opinions and we thought it might be more efficient if we scheduled those discussions on an annual basis.

For example, we might want to discuss the merits of flashing headlights on the trail during December when it gets dark earlier, crazy ivans (and other runner behaviors) during the spring migrations in April. If you miss the month, you have to wait for it to come around again (or read the former threads).

While efficiency is not really a hallmark of the forum (as evidenced by the untold hours we all spend here), this might be worthy of consideration.

    Others?

So you want to get rid of the forum? And shouldn’t this be on a different thread?

Seems to that if you dont want to discuss something it’s easy enough not to without forum rules. If you’re unhappy that other people are discussing something, propose an alternative topic (hint, we love bikes).

Yeah, we may wish reconsidering whether e-bikes should be allowed in FS. I don’t have a strong opinion, but you’re right that the overall award is distance-related and it certainly helps to have a motor. We’ll leave that for another thread and try to enjoy the remaining summer :)

We could put them on a team with the asmatics. But since all the prizes are pointless, I’m going to agree with Canon’s earlier comment and say it applies to BAFS as well (although I’d say it with nicer words and fewwer rainbows). Since strava has an ebike mode option maybe that could be incorporated into the software?

Regarding general ebike use on the trail, Dismal summed it nicely with, “as long as it’s done responsibly”. I doubt that etrike is any harder to control than the fully enclosed recumbents and certainly less unpredictable than a horse or dog.
