Is WABA or someone mobilizing to take advantage of the opportunities to promote cycling that the current situation presents?

Afraid to ride Metro and the bus, thousands of people need to get around — and now’s the time to push. Public education. Expanded lanes. Aggressive promotion of rentals. Bike parking. Employer-provided showers/lockers.

Seems to me a historic opportunity.

As of this evening, the potholes in question have been filled. So, the request got into the right hands.

Thanks, all, for this discussion. Thanks to ARLCXRIDER, we know the repair has been done.

I don’t know if my call alone drove the solution, but note for future use the NPS number I called (which Arlington had given me).

It was 703-289-2500. A real (and courteous person) answered it and evidently took note of my report.

Cheers … Happy July 4 … Safe riding.

    Henry,

Thanks for sharing the GWMP Superintendant’s message.

[ONGOING] Lane closures under Arlington Memorial Bridge

Until the end of July, workers will close lanes on the northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway and northbound Washington Boulevard near and under Arlington Memorial Bridge. The closures are scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. and end at 5 a.m. and may happen seven days a week.

Traffic on northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway will be redirected through Memorial Circle. Drivers should expect detours and to see workers in the area. The closures are to allow workers to repair concrete and clean granite underneath the arch as part of the ongoing bridge rehabilitation project. Learn more at go.nps.gov/memorialbridge.

Interesting that they’re not going to gut and rebuild that little section as they’ve had to with the sections over the water. Too bad they can’t widen it to allow two-way traffic.

    Thanks.

Careful if you ride down Marshall Drive (the downhill that goes from the back gate of Fort Meyer, where Meade Street ends, along the cemetery and Netherlands Carillon and Iwo Jima Memorial) to Route 110. Very deep and long pothole.

I contacted Arlington, which informed me that it’s NPS jurisdiction. I called NPS and reported it. Fingers crossed that they fix it soon.

Thanks to both of you for your replies.

When I rode by yesterday (Friday) afternoon at about 4pm, I noticed that both “trail closed” signs were lying on the ground. North of the bridge, one was on the ground a couple hundred yards away — still useless for route-planning purposes — and south of the bridge, it was just after the turn-off that goes across the Parkway and heads toward the big circle on the Virginia side of the bridge.

I don’t understand the details of the bridge rehab project, but it would make sense for that last section — where the trail goes under and where cars heading north on the Parkway pass under — to be closed at some point. When it happens, we’ll probably have to detour by Iwo Jima, Route 110, and the Cemetery, no?

BTW, there’s a massive and dangerous pothole on the road alongside Iwo Jima (from the back gate of Ft. Meyer to Route 110). I reported it to Arlington this week. Fingers crossed that it’s repaired before someone kills themself in it.

    Here’s a photo, taken during yesterday’s heat. I don’t use Twitter.

I actually tried this route thru Fort Myer on Bike to Work day but did not realize the gate to Arlington National was closed until 8AM.

As I was trying to get thru to Memorial Bridge, what should have been my route??

    thanks I’m such a newb,
    Caleb

The Fort Meyer gate (called Henry Gate) at the intersection of Arlington Boulevard and Pershing Drive is open at 6-8am and 4-6pm.

Remember that, in addition to the path through the cemetery, there’s a road within Fort Meyer that takes you safely down to the base’s Wright Gate, which is near the Netherlands Carillon, and then down to the path that runs along Route 110 over to the main gate of the Cemetery and safely off to Memorial Bridge. To take that route, you turn LEFT onto Sheridan Avenue, then RIGHT onto Jackson Avenue, and then down the hill to Marshall Drive, which goes to Wright Gate.

I ride through Fort Meyer at least once a week and have never had a problem.

Henry Gate opens at six and closes at six. Show any government-issued ID (driver’s license, agency ID, whatever), and they’re happy to let you through. If there’s ever a need to register people or to conduct inspections, the guards are courteous and efficient.

It’s a beautiful ride through the base. After entering Henry Gate, go to the T-intersection and turn left; turn right at the yield sign after the Town Hall; go by the Officers Club and some beautiful residences; and head on down the hill toward the Iwo Jima Memorial. The ride home is all up-hill, but the low (and well-behaved) traffic makes it easy. Just be sure to get back to Henry Gate by six o’clock, or you’ll have to go over to Second Street.
