ParticipantI’m going from a Riv-like bike to a real Rivendell!

ParticipantI would take a look at Handsome Cycles out of Minneapolis. I love my Devil and it’s been going strong for years.

ParticipantMy Abus is can be sticky — the channel cut into the ends of the U has right angles. It makes the cylinder easier to bind up. Other locks the channel has rounded edges and is more forgiving (and easier to defeat with prying, maybe?). I’m a fan of using T-9 in both the U-lock holes and the lock cylinder. I do this proactively a few times over winter or after it’s been in the rain a couple of times.

ParticipantI’m like 80% probability in case you are building a response model to estimate attendance.

Reminder: Happy hour tonight at ~6:00pm at Caboose in Vienna.
Other teams if you happen to be reading this: This is a Team 4 event. It would be really uncool if you infiltrated. It may rain. Stay home.
No, it’s fine if other teams come as long as they take the bus or drive. It’s gonna rain, people – stay off your bikes.

ParticipantHi Team!
My name is Tom Wyland aka FFX_Hinterlands. I live in Oak Hill as well, which is unincorporated Fairfax County just outside Herndon and Reston. I work less than two miles from home and bike every day to work. I also enjoy working in advocacy to help make bicycling for transportation more of a normal thing in the area. I’m a Fairfax County DOT Bicycle/Pedestrian Ambassador and a friend of FABB.
Riding:
– I do some “ride for fun” routes on the weekends (typically 10-15 miles, pace is 12-13mph average in Strava). I don’t have a road bike nor bicycle shorts.
– I ride every day to work and will try to ride every day of the contest again this year. I won the “lantern rouge” prize last year for riding every day of the contest and having the lowest miles.
– Most of my rides seem to be related to picking up groceries…
– I’m up for riding to breweries to sample beer and kombucha. I’d also like to do some gravel/double track riding if anyone is up for that.Bikes:
– Dahon folding bike (studded tires this year) for commutes/errands
– Handsome Devil steel touring/cross bike set up like a Rivendell with fenders, lights, racks, etc.Tom

Wimps. I saw a grand total of 5 riders on the CCT this morning. On the plus side, it did allow me to belt out many a stanza of “Baby Shark”
There are an amazing number of cyclists that would never get on their bike without proper bike shorts. The problem is that they don’t ride if it’s not shorts weather. Here I am deciding which weekend to put the studded tires on my bike…

ParticipantWhoa, welcome to the Hinterlands! There’s a FABB person, Paul K, who lives in Chantilly and could provide a perspective for that area. I’m north of Chantilly closer to the DTR.

ParticipantI just sold a bike of that description a few months ago. I would be that Bikes@Vienna might have something.

ParticipantIs the spacing 100mm front and 135 rear? I would assume so. Price?
Thanks,

ParticipantI posted this to the DC Family Biking Facebook page.

ParticipantThanks, Chuck!
I hope to catch up with you this weekend. I’m hoping I don’t have the honor of “last person to pick up their award.”

ParticipantSince no one mentioned it.. are your QRs tight and at the correct spot in the dropouts? Maybe the wheel isn’t centered between the chainstays.
Another thing could be a twisted tube. I got a flat once and was shocked to find a full twist in my tube.

Two things that work well for this issue –
1) Balaclava plus a buff – This is great because you can always wear one or the other as windchill/weather requires.
2) A hood that is fitted for a helmet. I have a Patagonia R1 fleece pullover and an Ibex will zip that are like this. Wear the hoodie plus a buff. You can also fit slim beanie under the hood as wellIf it isn’t obvious I would avoid a scarf on a bike. There’s too many bad things that can happen if it gets loose.
