This post just showed up on one of my favorite blogs:

Check out all the stuff that Long Now Foundation Director of Operations Laura Welcher brings with her on her daily bike commute in the San Francisco Bay Area. There’s an awful lot in her bag, but it makes sense! She’d make a good mountaineer (expert at repackaging and consolidating essentials.) I especially like the extracted and tied off dental floss, but I’m tickled that there’s a tire lever and multitool in the same tiny bag as masquera, blush, and bobby pins!

Sorry, dirt, americancyclo and I are all out of town today. eminva can’t make it either. You can lead the caravan, just remember to turn around somewhere in falls church. Happy Friday.
Yikes! Vin, thanks for the reply—-we might of gone too far, before realizing. I’m bringing Dave N (great rider; new-to-Bike-Arlington) with me so the plan is to go West on W&OD from intersection with Little Falls (1st crossing W of Lee Hwy) promptly at 6:45 and use Shrieve Road as our turn-around, and hopefully pick up Greg B?, Cyndi?, Shawn?, DKel? on the way out or back.
We’ll miss you; have a great trip and a good weekend.

The weather started out with threatening skies, but by then end was a perfect summer day; plenty of sunshine, and a perfect day! Matt Aune’s training ride suggested this drawing. Thanks, Matt! This ride took me through the neighborhood where I was 6 and 7 years old. I rode the same streets on my bike as a kid. I stopped by to see my elementary school. Miss Johnston, my heart-throb and second grade teacher was no where to be seen–OMG she must be 80 now!

19.5 miles Full RideThar’ she rolls! This bike ride GPS art drawing was the second since the crash that dislocated my shoulder and kept me from riding my bike for one full month! I conceived is drawing during my period of forced convalescence. Karen B and I rode this whale together, and had a marvelous time! As art rides go, this was pretty easy with no bush whacking, stream fording, nor stair climbing, but there were some busy roads to accompany the quiet streets through beautiful residential neighborhoods. The weather was a perfect summer day; warm but not hot, plenty of sunshine, and a perfect day!

The Kid wiped out on the switch back trail in N Arlington… There are pieces of him missing. Big big road burn.
Wow I didn’t know. Is this something new? I just saw him the other day at Revolution. I Hope he’s okay.

ParticipantHey Dave I just found out this morning. Vincent told me. So sorry to hear it; I know how bad it feels and having your bike scuffed makes it even worse! You’re now an official member of a club I hoped you would never join. Karen B and I both send our wishes for a speedy recovery!

I crashed at mile 62 or so …and had to ditch into a couple inches of gravel. The front wheel caught, I went over the handlebars and got some holes in my kit and some nasty rash on my back and side.
Sorry to hear this. Hope you have a speedy recovery. How was the bike?

16.8 miles Full RideThis is my first art-ride since my May 10 accident, but I’m back with lot’s of new ideas! Liz’s ride with Anne on May 26, 2014,(http://www.strava.com/activities/145816229) was the inspiration for this GPS art-ride drawing. Liz and I replicated her ride with some added drawing details and embellishments, so it was a new ride for both of us. Liz and I enjoyed a beautiful early summer Saturday morning that took us through quiet residential neighborhoods, gravel roads, and shady streets for some parts (hind legs); and busy thoroughfares with sprawling suburban shopping malls for other parts (the bushy tail). The adventure factor cranked up as we cut across lawns and a new-home construction area (base of the tail) culminating with bushwhacking through woods, skirting fences, a wet-footed stream crossing and stepping lightly over and through poison ivy (squirrel’s back)! I can’t remember a ride I enjoyed more! Liz is so much fun to ride with–a really great adventure ride partner!

ParticipantThese are Washington DC asphalt moguls that did me in! Heading south on 15th St NW, 150 feet from Constitution Ave. The main ridge is clearly in the direction of travel (most dangerous) and from left to right the drop is two and a half to three inches! An insidious trap for any cyclist! This is exactly where the cycle lane would be if it continued south on 15th after Pennsylvania Ave, so it’s the logical place for an unsuspecting rider to be.
Who in DDOT needs to know about the existing and potential harm this hazard is causing?!
