I have a three mile commute and expect I could do it in shorts and a T shirt without permanent injury. Certainly some commuters on the forum have epic journeys from the far reaches of the area but most of us are probably no further than a few hundred yards at any given point during our morning rides from hot coffee. Not sure this one day cold snap in the urban heat island of metro DC is a life safety issue for most of us. I could be wrong, often am – find out tomorrow though.I’m riding to Minneapolis tomorrow

That’s exactly what it is. Called the Spite House, because the builder wanted to keep carriages out of the alleyway adjacent to his existing house.
The current owner has a matching blue Smart car that he parks out front.
I guess they use a twin bed!

But then this! (Had to hike 2 miles to Spokes because my fingers froze trying to put the crankarm back on.
I hate when that happens! Hope you were able to get home okay.

Looks like a big truck or trucks went through on the W&OD east of Park Street in Vienna. Don’t know how far they went, but their tires smoothed down the snow into a nice double track. Easily rideable on studded tires. At least for now.

Why heck! …that’s the next best thing to plowing (if you’ve got studs, of course)
The killer is frozen ruts and grooves EVEN with studs! I’d like to go on record as saying “bikes were never intended to go sideways, EVER!” ….and that’s exactly what those danged ruts and grooves make me do! It scares the #$%^ out of me!

ParticipantNews sent from your reporter at the Java Shack. Friday morning, January 3, and the side roads are covered with about an inch of smooth packed snow. Main roads are mostly clear and wet with a little slush. I stayed off the trails so I can’t say about them. The coffee is hot!
