ParticipantStrava Art ride by Dave P and Brad F.

Miles: Drawing Only: 19.6 miles
Miles: Full Ride: 72.3 miles
This ride was done together with Brad Fry, an accomplished cyclist, whose daily commute gave me the idea for this turtle. Our ride took us close to his office and down some busy main roads as well as quiet residential streets and lanes. We had to cut through the school grounds of Fallsmead Elementry, bushwhack down a steep ravine carrying our bikes and then make our way across a small river at Glenora Park. We had to ride/walk a circle through a complex of buildings to do the eye, skirt the outfield a baseball field at Monument Park for the right rear leg, and weave our way across a mall parking lot at Rockville Pike and Wooton Pkwy! Through all this Brad was a good sport and a valuable contributor to our artworkFast Friendly Guy

It was a kudos-to-all-who-rode sort of morning. My thumbs are still reeling a bit.
You should’ve invited them to come inside and sit by the fire

Just got this email from the NPS.
George Washington Memorial Parkway Seeks Public Comment on Plans to Improve Safety on the Mount Vernon Trail at Theodore Roosevelt Island Parking Lot.
Aren’t we missing the 800 pound gorilla in the room? If the goal is increased safety at TR ……REPLACE TROLLHEIM plank bridge!
with a non-slip flat surface! It’s deterioration is exponential with whole sections rotting out (now marked by cones) It’s worse than corduroy and UNSAFE!I’ve lost count of the number of serious falls, spills, accidents at the chicane turn intersection with TR Bridge that I know of personally! I, myself have fallen even when I know the hazard and I’m being cautious. Signage is NOT ENOUGH to stop people from being hurt!
I honestly don’t know how we can seriously focus on the parking lot when the benefits of repairing/rebuilding the plank bridge far exceeds the relatively minor changes offered in the parking lot trail crossing!
Am I alone in this?

Ah, the less publicized “War on Geese”
I love ’em in the sky (as long as not directly overhead), and I hate ’em on the ground! It’s bad enough having mud, road salt and winter grime on my tires, frame, and legs, but I draw the line on goose feces. They’re POOPERS, not HONKERS and I wish they’d just stay off the trail!

How does the eTrex work as a bike computer? I keep waffling between getting an Edge or eTrex (the latter being the cheaper and more attractive option, natch).
I have both eTrex VISTA (which I used for mountaineering before I got the Oregon 650) and I have the Edge 810 for cycling and navigating on two wheels. I tried using the etrex for cycling–bought two kinds of handlebar mounts, and I can tell you there’s no question that the Edge is the way to go for cycling. I plan routes using ridewithgps, download to the Edge 810, then use the maps and displayed routes to help guide me (one example is on Strava art rides). I’m buying Garmin Euro maps for my Edge 810–for a week of bicycle touring in Spain with Karen B this summer–wouldn’t do it any other way!

You both have earned my admiration with your great drawings! Would you please consider posting images and a strava link in this thread?

I rode this route today. It’s based on the “red dragon” of Welsh mythology.
Designed it some time ago but didn’t have a chance to ride it until today, when the conditions were perfect. I took one wrong turn and had to make a slight adaptation for it (once I realized where I actually was) to avoid overlapping, but it worked out okay in the end. You can tell the hind claws don’t look as originally planned.
I printed the map with the route on it from ridewithgps on two sheets of letter paper, folded them up and stuck them in my front pocket (Club Ride jersey) as I tend to work better with full maps than directions. All in all, it was much more fun than any sort of recovery ride I would’ve been doing, and having ridden maybe 60-80% of the roads below (and knowing a lot of them very well from my commutes) it was easier than I expected.
Will,
Whoa! Your Strava ride art masterpiece is one of the best! I hope you keep on creating. I use ride with GPS to compose also. That ‘rubber band’ route editing tool, set to follow roads, is a great feature! I knew you were up to something big, and I’m glad to see it turn out so well. KudosFast Friendly Guy

Miles: Full Ride: 34.3Just think, I used to be content to ride to Mt Vernon or Leesburg on a nice weekend day! Before STRAVA ride art, I used to draw on nice flat paper, so it’s always a surprise when I find the roads in my drawing are HILLY! Three separate times I learned that what I thought were alleys turned out to be long flights of concrete steps, and those were easy compared to the uphill pedaling!. When am I going to learn that roads with names like “Ridge” “Summit”, “Overlook” “Crest” or any name with the word ”Mount” are going to involve climbs?!

ParticipantCall me if interested 703-850-4433 We’ll pick a start point that works for participants.
I guarantee you will discover some new places, ride some hills, grab some BAFS points, and have a blast! Approx 30 miles
We’ll get started at 9:00 and finish at 1 or 2 if we stop for lunch. This allows average speed of an easy 10 mph –not racing; but not slacker either!

Hey, all you Java quaffers! You missed a really hot econ class this morning (topic ordinal utility theory) I know it must be hard for you knowing the fun I was having (and you missed), so I won’t rub it in!
Help me out…I’m looking at this pic, and I think I spotted everyone: L-R: Consullarider, ??, dbb, RCannon, Dismal, Steve O, and Kayak-Cyndi, but Bob’s in the picture and I thought he was the cameraman…plus I don’t recognize the lady rider in HIVIZ between Consularider and dbb!
I’ll see you all at the Shack when Spring Break gets here.
