ParticipantW&OD Trail Work – Soil borings near Sparrow Pond
From my inbox:
“Between 12/26 through 1/5, a contractor for DES will be doing some soil borings near the Sparrows Pond stormwater facility. There will be a trail detour in effect while they are doing the soil borings. Because there are two parallel trails there, the detour should not be a major inconvenience for users.”Looks like W&OD will be closed at times, which will route trail users onto the Four Mile Run Trail. At different times, it looks like the Four Mile Run Trail will be closed, which will route trail users onto the W&OD.

For us newbies, is it essential to get snow/studded tires for commuting in the winter and participating in BAFS?
To echo what other folks have said about timing, I wrote a blog on this, and the data is pretty impressive.
Averages of the past Four Winters
12 (out of 121.25) days had snow on the ground
5 (out of 121.25) days it was actually snowing
Freezing Temps
93% had a high above freezing***
56% had a low above freezing***

ParticipantHey Drewdane,
BikeArlington hosted our annual lights giveaway in early November – the 6th in Rosslyn and the 8th near Columbia Pike. Post here.
If you’re heading through Rosslyn, shoot me an email and I can put together some reflective straps for you to share with ninjas. Email me erin.potter@bikearlington.com and we can get something set up for ya.

ParticipantUpdate from my inbox:
“The W&OD Trail improvements are nearing completion at the S. Oakland Street. The contractor is expected to complete work at this intersection by the end of November, then shift activities to the signalized entrance at the Barcroft Community Center during the first week of December. This work is expected to be completed by February 2018. The schedule is contingent upon the weather.
Construction times are 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday – Friday. The W&OD Trail will remain open throughout construction with short detours identified in the field when necessary during active construction to direct pedestrians and cyclists around the construction activities. At times during construction, the entrance to the Barcroft parking lot will be restricted to entrance traffic only in order to safely construct the new crosswalk, curb ramps, and pedestrian signals at the entrance. The non-signalized entrance will be available, as always, for entering and exiting the parking lot.

I believe you’re thinking of the House Bill. My understanding is the House version kills them all, the Senate version ONLY kills the bike benefit.
That’s my understanding, too. Senate bill keeps the $255 commute benefit for parking cars.

I assume these are some of the folks you saw, Tania.

ParticipantFun interaction from the polls this morning
My partner and I were getting back on our bikes after voting this AM and a man walking in remarked:
“You know what they say about the couple that bikes together AND the couple that votes together?”
And I was expecting the “stays together” line, but he went with “changes the damn world”So there’s that. Changing the world by biking and voting, friends!

ParticipantHi All,
As staff at BikeArlington, I’m definitely interested in conversations on how to improve the forum for users and reduce spammers. We’ve been having issues more frequently, and the notifications when you all flag something usually come right to my email so I can deal with them, but something in an update seems to have broken that, so you’re seeing spam posts up for longer.
Near term, I’m definitely game to work with some frequent volunteer users who might be interested in assisting with spam moderation. I’ll ask our tech help if there are other implementation steps, like those mentioned by Vicegrip and seconded by a few folks on this thread and report back to you all.
If you’re interested in assisting with spam moderation, shoot me an email at erin.potter@bikearlington.com.
Definitely want to give huge thanks to all of you who do flag spam, and all of you on this thread thinking about how to make things better. We’re open to longer-term solutions, too.

ParticipantHi folks,
Gentle reminder to please take the signed detour around this construction. It sounds like it’s been poorly marked (IE: is that sign a detour for cars? bikes? people walking? all?), but when you’re headed east towards Arlington, please take a right onto the second trail entrance. That first one is not very wide, and used a lot by kiddos and families using the playground.

Do you have versions for deer?
Deer are not specifically part of our outreach plan, but I too, enjoy the idea of deer gallivanting in reflective vests. If any stop by, we’re happy to supply. Please spread the word to your fellow deer commuters.

Also, you can attend a ribbon cutting celebration on 9/23, if that sort of thing is your jam.
