So no one really knows anything about this trailside obelisk? Is this the unicorn of trail accessories, or are these things really used for short term data collection and moved periodically?

Hey Justin– I checked in with the folks who manage all of the trail and street counters for peds and bikes in Arlington, and this guy is on duty! They’re looking to gather more information about the intersection with the trail and the condo entrance at Wakefield. There are 37 permanent counters and 6 portable ones (such as this one). They fondly refer to the portable ones you have here as the “Eco-Bucket”, since most of the products from the counter company are called “Eco-something”. BikeArlington has a few resources online about the program.

You got any of them pickles still?

My pickle vendor wasn’t there. :( I did buy bread… which was delicious and consumed very quickly after the event.

    • Potential Westover Farmer’s Market to have a pop-up opportunity to meet people in the community that might not be able to attend the Open House. Details to come as they are finalized with the Farmer’s Market.

    Come discuss over pickles*!
Project staff also will be available at the Westover Farmer’s Market, in the Westover Library Plaza, on Sunday, March 3. Stop by for information about the project and to provide feedback.

*Pickles dependent on my ability to set up for this event and attendance of a particular farmer’s market vendor.

On the connector project between the W&OD and 4MR trails on Walter Reed, I saw the curb cut yesterday they built on the NW corner of Walter Reed and 4 Mile Run Drive, and it’s bad for bicyclists (see photo). They’ve basically created this chute you have to navigate from the W&OD to go southbound on Walter Reeds new shared use path. If you’re going eastbound on the W&OD, it requires making a u-turn to get in the chute. This path is going to be hard to navigate on a bike and pretty much impossible if you have a trailer of sorts.

I’m not sure why they made this bad a design, particularly when other bike path intersections have used an open design to facilitate bikes and pedestrians moving through here easily. If they wanted to do this really well they would create a connection on both sides of the power line pole to allow users going both ways on the W&OD easy access to the crossing.

Hi y’all – thanks for the photo on the on the ground reports. I’ve shared this with the project manager, and she’s reviewing comments and plans. Right now, this is definitely still a work in progress, and not the final form. I know there have been a ton of constraints around underground utilities in this area, but I’ll let you know what I hear back.

    I shouldn’t be impressed, but I kind of am…

Thanks for spotting. I’ve forwarded this, but issues with the Custis Trail Improvement Construction (between N Scott Street and N Lynn Street) can also be sent to the VDOT construction manager, Tom Mulcahy.

It still was missing today. I was honestly happy when I saw that it was gone because of visibility. A lot of people try to pass on that blind corner and I had a bad crash in that spot because of that. I realize not being blown away into the GWP is more important however.

Seems like you get a bit more visibility for a bit yet. Working with Arlington DES Bike and Ped Planning staff, I was able to raise the issue and learn that “It looks like some time before the fence will be installed. They [the project contractors] stated the fence supply will be over a week and discussing the design with the airport architect’s. ” He’s checking to see what might be able to be done in the meantime, too.

    Thanks for looking out.

Of course, if people read the original post–or my many recent replies to it–they would realize it refers to 2018. But I’ve kind of given up on that happening.

Hi all– moderator Erin here. I’ve now closed this thread to new comments, and changed the thread title to reflect the 2018 year. 2019 Registration is not open yet, but stay tuned!

Hi Folks – Heading north on MVT this morning by DCA a plane was parked with it’s tail facing the trail and it’s engines running. This was in an area with no fence protection, and fortunately, I noticed the debris flying through the fence and slowed down. Still, it almost blew me over, and forced me across the lane, into the grass near the GWP before I was able to come to a stop. In the 3 years I’ve traveled on the MVT I’ve never come across this before – is this normal, or due to the high-traffic holiday travel? It seems pretty unsafe????

The next time someone rolls through this area– would you be able to snap a photo and share with me? I’ve been emailing folks at the County, NPS, and MWAA about the fence and what the replacement schedule is, and a visual would be very helpful.
