ParticipantSorry you had a bad experience. I’ve had several myself. Unfortunately bad things tend to stick in my mind and stay with me, and I often forget that 99 out of 100 rides are fantastic and conflict free. I occasionally remind myself of that fact (most rides are great!) and feel a lot better. Besides, without all my riding, my wife would leave me for buying a nice bike AND I wouldn’t be able to eat anything I want without gaining weight! I’ll trade occasional strangers berating me for a happy wife and all-I-can-eat meals!

ParticipantJust looked at my GPS route home tonight. Broke the 25 mph speed limit on Sligo Creek on my way home tonight. Scofflaw cyclist confirmed!

I can’t get my astronomy students to take the 5 mile trip from campus down to the museum to see this. Perhaps i’ll just start referring them to this forum!

Wow, last week went fast. Looks like tomorrow morning will be really nice for some hot beverages and tasty baked goods at Kaldi’s.
Just need to pick which bike to ride now! New bike or hybrid. Sadly leaning towards the hybrid due to the rain forecast.

Spotted a big black cat chowing down on a catch right beside the trail very near that location yesterday. Looked ready to defend it’s catch too. A little earlier there was a walker stopped on the trail looking back toward the left side. As I passed the young deer he was watching stood stock still in some light brush a few feet from the edge of the trail. Spring is finally here!!
I read this and pictured the Walking Dead. A walker stopped on the trail? EEK! Two immediate thoughts: go cleanout Giant of all their Peeps and jelly beans (sale+they’ll keep well) and I’m glad I got a faster bike.

Took the new ride on a short 12 mile jaunt along the Sligo Creek Trail (Takoma Park to Wheaton). Encountered an option between a rattling bridge or stepping stones to cross a stream. Bike is light enough and easily shouldered. Conclusion: I don’t need no stinkin’ bridges!

I’m sure it’s still a fine bike, but jamis made me sad when the decided to call the “satellite”s “quest”s and them add the new meaningless modifier “elite” to distinguish the original quest. Why is it such a problem for each model to have its own name? (FWIW, I hate the meaningless modifiers for all manufacturers, not just jamis.) If they start calling them all “Eclipse” next year, stick a fork in it.
All the stupid naming is pretty ridiculous. Ironically, when bringing the bike home today I was driving the whole way behind a Nissan Quest minivan!

ParticipantI thought I definitely wanted the Bianchi Lupo (Sora version of the Volpe), but was swayed by the sportier and lighter Jamis. Thought it would encourage me to go for a little more speed on my commute. Plus I like the lifetime Jamis frame warranty. We’ll have to meetup sometime and exchange notes on the respective rides!

After nearly a year of test-riding and TONS of assistance from the fine folks on here, I’ve found my drop-bar roadie! Jamis Comp Quest. Steel frame, new Sora components, small upgrade to 700c x 28 Vittoria Randonneur tires, otherwise stock. Only had time for a few short 3 mile-ish trips so far, but it shifts like a dream and is butter smooth. I think i’ll be able to really cruise on my commutes down the Capital Crescent Trail now! Kudos to the fine folks at Proteus bikes for helping me with the process and the single best consumer experience i’ve ever had. Special thanks to Greenbelt who recommended I give the Jamis a try in the first place. This bike seems to fly under the radar, but its combo of speediness plus very light touring possibility is exactly what I wanted. Lighter and faster than a Volpe, but still smooth, comfy and suitable for hours in the saddle. See you on the trails!

ParticipantI’m in as well. Definitely not easy to find how to join a team for me. I found Rod’s profile and joined his team through that! One positive about the site this year is that my syncing seems to be happening super fast this year. I put miles on Endomondo and they immediately sync to the NBC. Hopefully they’ll get some nice clear local leaderboards up soon, as those really motivated me last year!

ParticipantGeorgetown Branch Trail has moved from “frozen ruts of death” to “muddy fishtails of fun”. What a wonderful commute today!

ParticipantI find I can’t push too hard if I want to make my 30 mile roundtrip commute every day of the week. I need to go slowish to conserve energy for later in the week. Hopefully I’ll improve my speed as I get into better shape.

ParticipantCRAZY commute in today. First, a dog (looked like a very furry beagle/basset hound mix) ran across my path with its leash trailing behind. No owner in site. I chased it for about 3 miles on my bike (up a pretty big hill no less) as it was chasing a family of deer. Lost its trail somewhere around Wayne Avenue and Sligo Creek for any Takoma Park-ians who read this. Then, the gravel portion of my bike trail was covered in ice and snow. Slowed me to 8 mph for a few miles. To add insult to injury, I got a flat tire, went to the nearby bike shop to change it in a warm area and they were closed. Changed it in the cold and finally made it to work. All told, 1 hour 15 minute commute turned into 2 hours.

ParticipantAny Maryland-ers interested in a BTWD convoy to visit a few pit stops in the area? I’ll be in between summer sessions so should have all day to just cruise around! PM or reply here! If there’s enough interest, we can start our own thread.

ParticipantThank you SOOO much for this. I’ve sent a quick email offering my experience and my thanks. I’ve realized how much I miss the trails with all the riding through the city that i’ve had to do. Its just so dirty in the bike lanes and cars seem to have upped their game in the war to brutally maim cyclists. Its gotten bad enough on M street that I have bailed to the towpath! Stupid Priuses, BMW’s, Lexus’s, Mercedes’s, other luxury vehicles…
