Yay, we got Eric! You’ll be great, and welcome to the team!

By sabotage, do you mean maybe stealing a Mr. Williams’ chain when he’s not looking? That would be a good prank.

Thanks for the welcome! I’ve missed a few days due to travel and finalizing the 5 year process to get promotion/tenure. The tentative decision is positive and
there’s literally no more I can do towards it as of this past weekend. Note the increase in riding as a result! I should be good for a steady 100-150 points a week.
    Not high points, but consistent!

I’m thinking maybe I’ll create a Garmin-specific EMP and hide it one his bike somewhere. Trigger it whenever he goes on obscene rides of 200 miles in 20 degrees.

    Take off his pedals? ;)

I was thinking more of a Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding approach? I think Williams would somehow manage to do 200 miles without a chain or pedals. Would be difficult if we kneecap him!

A bit more about me: I commute from Takoma Park MD to Arlington VA every day (now that classes have started). I’ll start taking the long route (18 miles each way) now that I’m in BAFS and do it daily as long as there isn’t snow or ice. Once the CCT/Georgetown Branch get covered by ice, I start cutting through the city, so that’ll cut down my commuting mileage. Now that I’m in, I’ll also do my best to ride a mile a day. I have no qualms with sleaze rides!

I’ll also see what I can do about sabotaging some of the other big mileage riders that live my way in MD. ;)

It seems that Team 12 has been granted an alternate. I guess this means that now i’ll start taking the long way to work…

    Happy to join the team!

I’ve got the previous model year built up with Sora. Volpe is DEFINITELY a fantastic commuting rig and $800 is a great price.

Ironically enough, my biggest “ask” would be access to the Teddy Roosevelt bridge, or at very least Memorial, from North Arlington. They can plow all of Custis, but if it deadends at the bike counter, it doesn’t really help.

I try to avoid any commute through Georgetown via M street on a good day, but right now it seems to be the only connection into the city (from Key). Under best conditions I would only recommend this to a confident (if not foolhardy) cyclist at M street quickly devolves into “Thunderdome.” Based off of yesterday you’d better have a steel spine and think like a Jeep because there is no “shoulder” or room for error.

I’m about to try it again this morning… :( If I don’t make it, tell Teddy I loved him (and his bridge).

You could cut over to N street on Wisconsin easily enough and avoid a bit of the M street crazies. N is clear and quiet as of this morning around 8 AM.

Pondering biking from Takoma all the way to Marymount tomorrow. Pretty sure I’ll be good into the city. Curious if anyone has info on M street, Key Bridge, Custis up to Lee HWY and Lee Hwy up to Old Dominion and Marymounts main campus. I suspect my usual sidewalk riding from the Italian Store up Lee to MU wont be possible and I’m not a fan of riding that road uphill with rage filled speed demons in giant metal boxes…

New to me bike day. Built up a Volpe frameset from scratch! Only thing the shop did was install the headset. Pretty proud that I got it all assembled and tuned up on my own. Getting the triple up front certainly took some oomph!

Thinking I might need a shorter stem (90 mm) to bring the reach in a little but otherwise it rides nice and smooth. Fenders come tomorrow and I’ll be well setup with an all-weather commuter!

My round trip is from 30-35 a day. I find that nutrition is the most essential part for me to not be exhausted by Friday. When I don’t eat enough, I feel it. It’s useful to hear about the Gatorade tip too. Even with eating and drinking throughout the day, I’m still tired on really hot days. Perhaps some electrolytes will help with that…

I’ll recommend a dedicated camera, specifically the garmin virb. It’s battery last me 3 hours (enough for my roundup commute). The on/off switch is a giant sliding button. It “only” costs about $100. I wouldn’t be comfortable attaching my phone to my bike and using the video on there due to super quick battery drain and the rough parts of trails I take that jostle the bajeezus out of me!

Coming soon to a trail near you…

Walked the frameset from the point of purchase 1.2 miles to my office. Pondered strapping it to myself for my ride home but figure I’ll drive in to pick it up a day instead. I’m still shopping for some of the essentials anyways…

Planning to tap some local bike coops for help, as. I don’t have all the tools but do want to learn. Might go with a LBS, but would like to give some cash to the coops in exchange for their willingness to help me learn.

    Pretty firm plans for now:
1). Cane creek 40 headset (install with help from Rockville Bike Hub or some other local bike coop)
2). New road/brake cables and housing (also installing with help from bike coop)
3). New 700×35 tires from Nashbar. Worked great on my hybrid so we will give them a try here. Plus they’re only about $17 each!
4). Nashbar canti’s (front and back). I hear they’re Nashbar branded Tektro onyx. Good enough start and only $25 for the pair.

    Still wondering:
1). Brake cable mount for front – headset vs fork mounted…hmmm…
2). Fenders – 45 mm sks longboards or planet bike brand. Either should do fine.
3). Bar tape…what color will look snazzy…red blue or green…hmmm…
4). Chainstays have a lot of scuffs and scrapes. Thinking some Chainstay protectors might give it a cleaner look and provide some protection. Hmmm…

All the other pieces will be transferred over from my parts bin. FSA triple, sora shifters, FD, RD. Ritchey drop bars, Alex wheels, rear rack off my roadie, brooks b17 off my roadie.

All in all, I think I’ll have one nice new to me commuter!

Also, sorry to hear about the theft. I live in the Takoma area, so I’ll definitely keep my eyes open.

Are you on facebook? If so look up the DC Stolen Bikes and DC Used Bike Marketplace. Posting on those has helped a few folks get their bikes back.
