ParticipantEarly Xmas gift! Now I need to replace my hybrid with a cross bike so my maintenance manual will work with all my bikes!

Hi all,
I am also a newbie to this forum and to the freezing saddles. I’m a year-round commuter (silver spring to rockville) and also avid rider of all forms of bikes and paths. Looking forward to connecting with everyone.

Another Silver Springer! You should join us for Tuesday coffee club at Kaldi’s coffee bar in downtown Silver Spring from 7AM-8PM.
We coordinate a bunch through Twitter so hit me up on there if interested (@ebubar).
This of course goes for anyone interested in meeting some other Maryland commuters!

ParticipantI think you’d be good with the road bike with a rack and maybe fenders. I’ve commuted with various combinations of road/hybrid bike with backpack or rack and panniers. My preferences vary on the storage solution, but the drop bars and position on the road bike are TREMENDOUSLY more comfortable than the hybrid over my 15 miles.
The comfort factor is large enough that I’ve started looking at replacing my hybrid (current foul weather bike) with a drop bar gravel grinder. Riding the fenderized hybrid in rain keeps my Jamis nice, but the ride isn’t nearly as much fun.
Which brings me to another recommendation: if you want another bike (n+1) have you considered a gravel grinder? Something like a Giant Revolt or Anyroad, Specialized Diverge or GT Grade. All have good reviews for combining speed with versatility. All have disc brakes for all weather stopping. Most easily take racks and fenders. These seem to combine comfort of hybrids with performance of road bikes. All of the above will run from 700-1000, so they’re pretty reasonably priced too!

I was cured of that when I saw this offering from GT.
Oh great. ANOTHER covet bike! Add this one to the mix too (Giant Revolt).

Newest desire for a winter commuter. Most forums I read say its ugly…I kind of like it. Giant Anyroad 2: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/anyroad.2/18747/76170/#specifications

Daily commute with the VIRB. Really liking the Virb Edit software! Undecided on Virb or Go-Pro camera though…

I’m pondering plastic bags over wool socks (possibly sandwiched by another sock). If that doesn’t work, I have mixed platform-spd pedals, and I’ll just go to wearing “normal” winter shoes.
I’ve been doing this with the cold snap. Wool socks, plastic bags and another pair of wool socks. It has kept my toes from being unbearably frozen (still cold, but i’d expect it after 1.5 hours commuting).

ParticipantI’m in but i’m feeling rather slackery in light of the heavy snow rumors.
I like the idea of using last winter’s miles for the handicap rather than September-November. I put in some decent miles
(30 a day, 5 days a week commuting) in the fall, but once the snow starts don’t have the time to bike my usual 30 miles a day.
Basing my handicap on the cold (but not snowy) fall would be a disservice to my team…unless I join with the Slackers. In that case,

You: A fellow “cyclist” in a black SUV VA plates (surprisingly) with your shiny Trek road bike in the back
Me: The cyclist that you buzzed WAY too closely (considering that was another ENTIRE lane on the left side of me for you to drive on) heading north on GM Drive just before the Route 50 crossingWhen I got to your window, I was going to start the conversation with “Pretty cool bike you have in the back, as a cyclist, I just wanted to make sure that you were aware that there is a 3 foot passing law in VA to make cycling safer for everyone”, but instead, you started the conversation with “you were riding in the middle of the lane, I am a cyclist too, but you were in the middle of the road”… Unfortunately, I was unable to complete my conversation with you since the light turned green and you spun your tires as you sped off. I would like to continue the conversation and remind you (as a driver and a “fellow cyclist”) that sometimes the middle of the lane is the safest place for me to be (even if there are bike lanes), and that just because you are driving your bicycle around in the back of your giant SUV does NOT make you a cyclist.
I was really disappointed to be almost hit by someone who claims that they are also a cyclist, especially since this person should know how dangerous and rude that is. Especially since from the brief conversation I had with you, it seemed that you buzzed me on purpose because I was not riding where you thought I should have been. 😡
Since getting my cycling camera i’ve been much more confident about “taking the lane” and riding somewhere between the right tire track and the middle of the lane. In my experience, that is the safest place to ride. Anyone who doesn’t realize that the middle of the lane is a perfectly reasonable and safe place to ride is kidding themselves about being a cyclist.

ParticipantI can be there at the normalish time, but don’t have the day off so have to roll out around 8 AM.
Will have a new Garmin Virb to show off though!ebubar
ParticipantThat looks like it will be an awesome setup indeed. Can’t wait to hear how it works for you!

ParticipantVirb arrived today. Unfortunately subluxation of my shoulder (popped out and then back in when I flipped over my handlebars) on Tuesday night’s commute will delay testing.

I got one just for the great price. Got a GoPro Hero 3 for the birthday, but figured for this price I could try it out and sell whichever I don’t like.
The video preview feature and improved battery life might just make this one a winner!October 9, 2014 at 11:55 pm in reply to: Which bike should I buy for winter commuting, weekend rides, and Freezing Saddles? #1011935ebubar
ParticipantLet us know how it goes! I’d like a winter drop bar commuter myself and BIKESDIRECT seems a potential route to go.

Well, I pulled out the rain bike and switched the lights over, so it better rain.
So we should all thank you when there’s no rain at all!
A week or two ago I did my “rain prevention duty” and pulled out my rain bike and brought all my rain gear. Of course there was not a drop of rain. -
