What if you know that the light won’t change? Do you have to wait the two cycles anyway?
I’ve been known to have an exaggerated sense of time. Key on the law being “whichever is shorter”

I wonder how much worse the injuries would have been if they’d both been on steel. That frame must have absorbed a lot of energy when it broke. And there would have significantly more energy flying around if the bike s were steel.
The last thing Specialized needs is a new crumple zone selling point.

And make sure there are reflectors on your pedals–those things scream “a bike is here”.
Presumably, the individual in this scenario had such pedals.
I go:
- Reflective Backpack
- Reflective Shoes
- Green/Yellow Blinkie on the Backpack
- BIG Red Solid or Blinking on the seat post
- Bright front light
- I own most of Wiggle’s dhb Flashlight apparel line
I think having some color in your lights (not just red and white) help in saying “I’m not a car. I am odd and stick out. Pay attention to me”
*edit – I also have reflective stickers hidden all over my helmet… I’m trying to think of all the places I’ve added random reflective things. Having said that, twilight is a tough time. Some people aren’t using their lights and the power of reflective gear is limited depending on the ambient lighting.

The gearing is just off 70 gear inches in either direction, depending on what tires are on. That’s pretty average—or even low-ish—for this area.
TwoWheels is running like 79gi now according to another topic. I don’t know how you guys do it. My 145lbs frame just can’t get that spinning fast enough off the line for me to be happy. Thus the 2 speed IGH for me. 66gi and 85gi.

Finally swapped in the 16t cog that has been sitting on the shelf for 5 months, so the Cinelli is running 48×16 (79gi). Cuts my RPMs down by about 10 coming down hills, which really helps me keep power to the pedals up the next hill. Only bad part is going up hills from a dead stop. Definitely like this gearing for the commute though.
Also arrived home to see my Virb warranty replacement arrived, and instead of sending me a refurb, Garmin sent me a NIB unit, so I got another battery and set of mounts out of the deal. Thanks Garmin!
That is steep. I found my acceleration too slow off the line at 72gi. Props to you.

ParticipantWiggle has the specs to the V85.
Bike inside leg length does not equal your inseam. It is generally a bit longer. Based on that and you’re height the 54cm is likely where most shops would put you. RivBike and Sheldon Brown both have good readings on the bike fitting process. Like others, I would nudge people towards the larger size in most cases.

ParticipantI live very close to the Fairfax location. I worked for Circuit City when it went belly up. I don’t envy the employees. A reminder to those stopping by in the coming months to be kind to those still sticking around until the last days of HTO.
They carry a lot of Gore Bike Wear for those that like their line of stuff.
If I’m honest, their sales in the past have been lacking. They never seemed super motivated to move old inventory to make way for new stuff. However the closing of their Fairfax location gets that shopping center one storefront closer to the future redevelopment of the area.

ParticipantGood platform pedals can be awesome, whatever keeps us all riding. WellGo R-146 Magnesium are my personal choice. I use the Chrome Truk shoes. They have a reflective heel which increases my visibility a bit.
Whatever she chooses, do keep in mind the thickness of the sole. You can very quickly find yourself with a saddle that is 1/4″ to 1/2″ too tall/short if you go from something with a thin sole like vans to something more robust like a fiveten style shoe. Teva used to make a competitor to fiveten and you can pick them up for very little. I didn’t love how chunky/wide they were.

Also, boston is hard to read a looks like a bus map.
Austin is ok, but takes forever to load. The Fairfax City Bike and Trail map that just came in the mail. It is horrible. This is well done. Always room from improvement, but well done. Keep up the hard work, if I’m lucky it will rub off down 66/29/50.

Participantdkel – what did you end up choosing for your gearing/gain ratio/gear inches/choose the variable name? Eyeball tells me 50t on the front and the rear is ????

ParticipantSooo.. I’ve commuted for over a year now, daily, with #1 but without #2-#9.
What you need are two pedals. You don’t even need two wheels. Just go ask those weird unicycle people. What is left are useful items that you might enjoy having, given the type of ride you are about to endeavor on and your personal preferences.
Things I find useful that they don’t mention:
Lights
Options other than full fenders

ParticipantJust to continue to stoke this fun, those trip numbers are for the individuals current commute, probably by single occupancy vehicle.
My bike commute is about 2 miles longer than my car commute each way. Just because it works for one, doesn’t mean it works for another. I now open the floor for people to correct my anecdote with their own anecdote that cycling is a more direct route for their personal commute. Which I am sure is true in some cases. We can then later debate which is more likely.
Sidenote – Peak bike was reached in my office park in west west west west west falls church earlier this week:
