ParticipantTwo things here:
Reporting – I’d go with dasgeh’s advice and also add that a recording device of some kind could help, but only at the margin.
Avoiding – Adding to lotm. I ride on Lee Highway in Fairfax. It is 4-6 lanes with a speed limit of 40mph. I ride on it for one mile. There are five stop lights in that one mile. I would not really ride on it otherwise. I ALWAYS take the lane. Your life isn’t worth their convenience. This video (skipping to 3:30 for the action) is a quick example of how drivers react differently just between lane control and right tire track on roads like that.
If you aren’t comfortable taking the lane, I’d encourage sidewalk riding only where you don’t feel comfortable taking the full lane.
As with almost all cycling issues, its very scenario specific. I don’t know where on Columbia Pike you are or what traffic is like there. Just my general thoughts on lane sharing on high speed roads. Namely, I don’t share them.
Ahhhh video inserted as more than just a link… do not like!!

OneLessCar, are you typing your rants on a completely American-sourced and made PC/laptop/cellphone?
Didn’t think so.
In before: “I am forced to use chinese electronics because of blankity blank policy, communism, consumerist sheep … this is all your fault.”
He is unable to differentiate between not wanting an ELF on a path and not wanting an ELF anywhere else, like the road.. where numerous people have suggested it be driven.
The real question is; how far down the mind game has he gone? Is he really pro ELF? Or is he trying his best to to seem like a complete nimrod to make the ELF look bad (by association) because he actually hates it? If i know, that he knows, that I know….

ParticipantA poorly veiled attempt by Tim Kelley to get more people into the BAFS 2016 I see.
I’m on to you.
I track everything on strava so I have a concept of how many miles various parts/components are good for.

ParticipantI own a 2010 VW Golf TDI
The good news is that I only put about 2,500 miles a year on it. Sorry everyone. My other car is a bike I put about 3,500 miles a year on?

ParticipantThis is a conflicting study that actually had pedestrians and cyclist breathing in less pollution.
They don’t seem to account for a cyclist who is working hard and so is taking in more air though. I don’t really worry about it. Even the studies that have been done tend to be from Europe where diesel NOx is a much bigger pollutant and has real effects on lungs. Gas emission is heating us up, but less directly effects the lungs (I am not a scientist of any kind).
The study does bring up the point that although it might smell better, or not have the immediate “Oh God, really warm air, this is full of awfulness” that you have on a bike. When you are in a vehicle stuck behind another vehicle etc, you are actually just sitting in a metal box full of the fumes that are outside with no way for them to dissipate (wind). Vehicle air filters do nothing to take these pollutants out.
So nope, I just ignore it. although there is a special place in my heart for the Metro/Commuter buses that run on natural gas. Oh man, getting tucked in behind one on a cold January morning is so wonderful.

ParticipantArguing the law with scoff law cyclists. He must not know what a hard@$$ group we are. Odds are solid, we aren’t the cyclist yelling obscenities at you. We have as much control over their behavior as we have over yours. You’re welcome to take your complaints to the NVRPA.

Park authorities act (Code of VA § 15.2-5700 through 5714) gives park authorities the right to regulate use of land and facilities, and to enact rules and regulations concerning the use of properties.
Given the stance on his website and also the tone in this thread, I don’t think you will be changing his mind through some legal argument. Short of the NVRPA physically enforcing his removal from the trail, he seems pretty likely to continue to be a user of the trail. This might as well be a missed connections thread, watching people talking past each other. I’m unaware of who at NVRPA would be the person to contact. But they probably don’t lurk around here.
I’d wager he is about as open to the idea of not using the trail as other trail users are open to the idea that it is safe for him to use the trail. Nothing he says is going to make you think its safe and nothing you say is going to convince him its unsafe.
Lets all go pedal a less than four wheeled vehicle? At least then you’ll be happy and forget about him.

ParticipantOnly thing that gets me hugging my saddle as hard as sand/grit and rain in January is wet leaves in November.

ParticipantOctober is wonderful, but the temperature changes between 6am and 4pm can be tough to plan for. My favorites so far are leg and arm warmers combined with vest, skull cap thing, and castelli thermal neck thingy as needed. So far this works for me down to 30 and i can add and take away as needed and be comfortable all the way up to 60 which is just shorts and a t-shirt weather. And if it is in the 20s at 6am and in the 60s at 4pm i’m just screwed.

Fortunately, there is no such person. The first three numbers are issued based on the geographical area where the Social Security number is issued, and 123 is not assigned. Yep, I’m the kind of nerd who knows such things.
I used to have fun being able to tell where people were born/immigrated in with that little fact, sadly they did away with it in 2011. So don’t try to pull it on whatever generation comes after millennials, it won’t work.

I have only one bicycle, an old 30 lb mountain bike with fenders, and I ride it virtually every day, generally 16 to 30 miles……….. I’m 90 lbs, so I don’t wear things down so quickly. I’ve been riding daily for a decade. (Sometime I will buy a second bicycle, a fast one so I can join some of you on centuries.)
