I didn’t see the Bikeshare corral they promised at Freedom Plaza, so I kept going on to work.
I know there’s a station 1/2 block south on 14th St. I didn’t see one at the Plaza though.

Pete – what happened to your crank, chain, spokes… Heck, how did you ride that thing in ; )
I got skillzes like you’ve never seen before.

ParticipantWent back out to Freedom Plaza now that there are humans there. Very cool to see so many folks packed into the plaza. The great thing was that the speeches were really short because the wind blew the fountain across the stage getting anyone speaking soaking wet. WOOHOOO!
Freedom Plaza in full swing.
The obligatory People for Bikes photo. Bikes Belong!!!!If you’re not familiar with this organization, please take time to check out the web site and sign the pledge!!!

ParticipantSo many thanks to the Bike Arlington and WABA folks that make this happen. The volunteers ROCK!!!!
My only disappointment is that the Swiss Embassy didn’t have a tent in Freedom Plaza this year. They are always one of my favorite things about BTWD. I will survive.
Nice to see AAA sponsoring a tent.
Awesome Chris_S for your first bike to work day. The pit stops are fun, so I’m glad you went out of your way.
Liz: Cool to hear that the Farragut Square pit stop went well. I’ll add that one to my route next year.

Regret missing this. Don’t regret missing you riding with some seriously questionable aero bars.
I don’t think they’re questionable. They are undoubtedly obscene in every imaginary way. What’s to question about that? Next time I’ll make her wear condoms.

ParticipantI rolled through Rosslyn at about 0620 this morning. I saw Tim as he scampered back to the office for something important. Snapped a few photos, then rolled on to Freedom (isn’t Free) Plaza.

In heaven there will be Cross Checks. Satan rides carbon.
Hahaha…. I guess that has me firmly planted in limbo. I love steel, ti, aluminum, scandium, carbon and bamboo. I’ve ridden and enjoyed them all. I currently own each except for bamboo. I need to fix that.

ParticipantI’ll add to the chorus here. In general, Surly makes some quite amazing bikes at reasonable prices. They are not fancy. They are not light. They will likely survive the apocalypse. (Please don’t let the world ending this Saturday night diminish my love of all things Surly.) I’ve owned 7 Surlys over the years, including a cross check. I love them.

I don’t care if you are a member of the National Orangutan Party, if you advocate on behalf of the cycling community, you are terrific.
Speaking as a card carrying member of the Orangutan Party, I can only say Amen, sista!
Dirt
ParticipantWell I guess I’ll be a total jerk and suggest that it might not be a bad idea for cyclists to actually moderate their speed at busy intersections like that. Making it easy for people to ride through that intersection at full speed might not be the safest thing for other trail users.
Maybe that’s just me.
That said, I’m not sure they’ve completed the lines and signage for that intersection yet.

ParticipantThe normal schtick in my office is:
Coworker X: Tell me you didn’t ride to work today!
Me: I didn’t ride to work today. (Oozing with sarcasm.)
Coworker X: Oh good. D’OH! You *DID* ride to work today!May 18, 2011 at 10:16 pm in reply to: Eastern Shore/ Talbot County Ferry Loop (Long Version) #926021Dirt
ParticipantMy Steamroller will likely be back on the road by Friday. It will be a perfect bike for this kind of ride.
Dirt
ParticipantI’ll be the huge guy with jingle bells on his handlebars and likely wearing pink. I wasn’t planning on stopping at Rosslyn… Usually I roll past there before it is open. Listen for the jingling noise… that is a dead give-away that it is me. I’ll either be riding a painfully green fixie with black fenders, or a lovely pink fixie with pink and white fenders and a girlie mudflap on the rear fender.
Definitely take a moment to introduce yourself.

Said alleged Surly is my ride of choice this week as the rain may cause the Specialized to melt. Or get dirty, which is way, way worse.
In theory, the Surly in question will leave the Meto Center area at 1630 today and proceed down the MVT to 4 Mile Run and the W&OD.
I’ll catch you later in the week. My ride time is similar, but I need to do some shopping in Clarendon, so I’m going up through Rosslyn.

Now I’m sure I passed by you in the other direction 10 seconds after you took this. Yellow Van Dessel frame, yellow bar tape?
I was way too busy savoring my victory (and looking for other photographers to document how awesome I am) to notice anyone else.
Just kidding. Honestly I didn’t see you. Were you one of the folks at the far side of the traffic light at the beginning of the W&OD?

Ah, Cat6 fame is so fleeting. Thought I had the podium cornered, but no.
We shall meet again, Mr. Man-on-the-Van-with-the-camera-in-his-hand.
Congratulations on the crushing defeat of the Townie-girl.I still gotta check out the alleged Surly.
I ordered parts for mine today, so I will have it back on the road soon.
