This morning on the MVT I was passed within inches without warning by a guy in a white polka dot jersey on a mountain bike with light colored tires.
Where are the fashion police when you need them? Seriously this combination is only acceptable if you have just escaped from a mental hospital that had polka dot shower curtains!

Legs fine…head fine…bike(s) fine. I want to ride, and I’ve had the time. So what’s the problem?
I think the answer is pretty obvious…. cement over the yard and build a mini velodrome…. done!

ParticipantThanks everyone for the great advice, I will let you know what I do and how it goes!

Also, I really like this book “The Stark Reality of Stretching” He goes into immense details about how to properly stretch while still somehow keeping it simple. He talks you through the most important stretches. Super valuable.
Gonna check that book out ASAP. Massages are pretty magical. When I was young I played competitive tennis and taught at a pretty posh club. My knees ache to this day because of it but we did get free massages once a week, it was bliss!

What type of backpack are you using?
I am using a Vaude Bike Alpin 25-5 Backpack. It is the “air” model so it floats off your back a little a breathes better. This is not ideal for off-roading as it can bounce around a little, but for commuting it is awesome. VERY adjustable, even down to the torso length. Will take a bladder system if you have one, expandable, lots of compartments, built-in rain cover, key/phone pouch, blink light attachment, and built really well…. great zippers, perfect seams, super comfortable. I almost always have 10-15lbs. in it but have occasionally hit Whole Foods, expanded it and crammed tons of food and beer in it. Even fully loaded it is still very comfortable and accessible.

I tried lots of bags (Osprey, Ortlieb, Banjo-Brothers, Novara, Deuter) but loved the Vaude.

And the smells from the Italian Store/BGR Shack at Lyon Village are… EVIL, if you’re trying not to eat delicious pizza/burgers every day.
OMG, the smell of their pizza is just plain stupid, I swear I must look like Wimpy from the old Popeye cartoons floating along on the aroma whenever I pass through there.

ParticipantI can help out during the Sunday slot 11:00 – 5:00 but someone has to keep me away from the cotton candy, I mean it!

ParticipantMust remember to skip either the sliders or the Walter Reed hill this time… looking forward to it.

ParticipantI saw Bob this morning going incognito in blue- next time I’ll say good morning Bob (or something similar)… He’s easily recognizable- do you think that it would freak him out if out of nowhere everyone was addressing him by name?
No chance it would freak him out, like you said he’s pretty much built out of iron and crushes everyone trying to follow him… I would assume he can handle a few “hello’s” along the way…..unless he is in a witness protection program!

ParticipantMost fun ride home in a long time after Chasing legends, quite roads, all downhill**, a Guinness meal in my belly.. felt like being a kid all over again, especially the Guinness part!
**except for TwoWheelsDC’s lovely wife you apparently has to cross the Alps to get home.. apologies!

ParticipantHoly crap, I passed through there about half an hour earlier. It was quite, but the rain had made the path pretty slick. I echo your sentiments and hope the rider is OK.

Guy with the Van Dyke beard on a Tarmac and red NCVC kit? If so, my Bob is your Bob! I see him near Vienna on the Hunter Mill climb near a Bob-look-alike (slightly larger, slightly less dependable). I think that he has a monster ride- I’ve seen him out in Sterling and as far in as Falls Church.
yep, that’s Bob…. his ride must be huge as I have seen him in Rosslyn as well.
I have seen the rest of your folks when I ride in earlier, but mostly I am leaving Rosslyn around 7:30, hitting Merrifield around 8:15, and heading back home around 5:30, but because I own my own business my times vary.

You could even stick your elbows and knees out for greater effect.
I ride naturally with my boney knees and elbows sticking out…. sort of like a scarecrow on wheels…. still has yet to deter them, maybe I need to install a plow on the front of my bike?

(I’m wishing I’d ordered the fenders from them!)
Rock on, Planet Bike!
If you are ever in the Fairfax/Merrifield area, I have a full workshop and would be glad to help you get those fenders installed…. however, I do work for beer and compliments!

ParticipantNot sure about DC, but the bike lane in the Ballston/Clarendon corridor is clearly labelled for bicycles only and yet I deal with runners in it every morning and evening. I have lost my s**t a few times when a runner is coming towards me and I have no where to go. My option is to play chicken with the runner or veer out of their way and hope a semi or bus isn’t coming up behind me. Until a little painted stencil of a runner is in the lane pretty sure it is for cyclists only. I once calmly asked a runner why they were in the lane and the answer was “it is more convenient”, my response “for me its saving my life”.
