I have never before worn the boots in a steady rain without also wearing rain pants, because without the leg of the pants covering the top of the boot, all the rain just flows straight into the shoes. And stays there. Because the shoes are waterproof. In both directions, apparently. Really, really waterproof.

Same here with my Garneau waterproof shoe covers, rain down my legs went down the top and soaked my sneakers underneath, glad I packed dry socks.

Very glad of the rain gear I bought, last night’s rain storm was drenching. The Camelbak cover for my backpack worked great and kept my office clothes dry. Rain cape and helmet cover from J&G Cyclewear were better than my old poncho because the thumb loops and waist tie kept it from flapping in the wind as I crossed the Roosevelt bridge. Garneau waterproof shoe covers helped when I got off the Art 43 bus at Courthouse and stepped down into 6 inches of fast moving run-off. Really appreciate the more frequent ART 43 bus schedule during safetrack, but they need a bus shelter at the Rosslyn stop on Fort Myer Drive.

Rode my own (ancient heavy) bike to work for the first time today from VA Square (usually I’m an occasional Capital Bikeshare rider). Love the new trail along Arlington Blvd and was pleasantly surprised not to be hassled by drivers as I continued on the road up to N Meade St. Near miss riding through Iwo Jima when a smartly dressed Marine holding a sword burst out of one of the porta-John’s and ran across the path in front of me – I don’t mean for you to miss parade but did you hear my bell? Pleased to see a motorcycle cop standing near the crossing on the north side of Memorial Circle as it meant traffic was well behaved.

Having spent quite a bit of vacation time traveling to the National Parks out west…they are faced with overflowing, ancient toilets, few rangers to ask questions, crumbling buildings and subpar accommodations…That said, there seems to be more esprit de corps and pride amongst the employees outside the DC area

I do appreciate the time and effort NPS and state park rangers put into giving interpretive programs in some very remote locations. A couple of years ago I enjoyed the tours given by staff at Salinas Pueblo Missions, White Sands, and Oliver Lee parks, in New Mexico. I wish Congress would give the Dept of the Interior more leeway to work with state governments to keep public properties open and prevent a future repeat of the 2013 shut-outs.

Regarding Memorial Bridge beyond its role as transport over the Potomac, the Sun Gazette mentioned an upcoming talk by NPS site manager David Lassman next Thursday 6/11 at 7pm in Arlington Central Library about the ceremonial role of the bridge, circle, and memorial avenue, to be followed by a public Q&A.

A new connection to the Mount Vernon Trail will also be completed as part of the project for trail users to access Long Bridge Drive, the Pentagon and Crystal City.

It would be good to connect the MVT with Long Bridge Park. In addition to extending the Desire Path they would need to install at-grade crosswalks across the 395 intersection cloverleaf roads and narrow Boundary Channel Drive/widen the sidewalk under 395.

NPS is obviously not completely opposed to the idea of major infrastructure projects to improve safety.

If ongoing repairs to Memorial Bridge suck up NPS capital improvement funds for the forseeable future, I can’t see how NPS could pay for future pedestrian/bicycle safety improvements around Memorial Circle let alone contribute towards improving safety at the intersection of doom :(

I found the answer to my question, on the application form in the sponsor section it says “Active Duty or Civilian DoD Employees” so looks like I need to buy my friends a beer :-)

Anyone with a DoD badge that knows you can sponsor you for your AIE pass (which gets you a pass good for a year instead of 60 days) It’s NOT limited to folks at the Fort, etc.

    Hi Chris,

I wonder do you know if Civilian DoD badge holders can sponsor non-DoD affiliates for an AIE pass or only active duty military?

    Cheers

Thank you for doing this video @bobco85. It helped me to see all the drawings. I too found the inconsistency confusing. IMG0803 marked “tunnels option” appears in line with @PotomacCyclist’s tunnels suggestion but includes an at grade crossing south of the circle. I do not like the idea of tunnels to redirect folks under existing roads without fixing the problems above.

I agree with @PotomacCyclist IMG0783 is my preferred option. I like how this option moves vehicle traffic to the south west, opening up waterfront park space for public enjoyment. I appreciate the cloverleaf connectors from the Mt Vernon Trail up to the Bridge sidewalks. As @Dasgeh and @PotomacCyclist mentioned, Pedestrians walking to Arlington cemetery and cyclists coming up the bike paths on Memorial avenue would need to cross the two entry/exit roads on the south west side of the circle. This would require at-grade crosswalks with light signals otherwise you would simply move the road/pedestrian/cyclist interface problems to the south west. Tunnels under those entrance roads might be an alternative to at-grade light signals.

Fox 5 posted this helpful map marking the road closures. I come in from Arlington over the 14th St Bridge and yesterday morning I road past a police car and barriers being erected on Ohio Drive SW heading north toward memorial circle. I think with no pedestrian access that means the Rock Creek trail will also be closed in the red marked areas on the map. I plan to take the Mt Vernon trail/VA Ave connector over the TR Bridge and past the Kennedy Center into Foggy Bottom.
