Broke my leg
Update: the Ortho yesterday agreed I could stop using crutches and prescribed physical therapy, I had hoped to use my Balance cyclist injury insurance to help cover the co-pays but there is apparently a clause requiring PT to begin within 60 days of the accident which would have been…last Friday, and I didn’t require surgery for internal fixation which would have pushed a PT date back further. Sigh…

ParticipantDrove along Pershing east-bound to work this morning I noticed a large pile of trash cans blocking the bike lane and pushed out into the street on Pershing between Danville and Cleveland Streets in a stretch the plan indicates won’t have flexposts, don’t know if the businesses/residents do this regularly on trash day.

ParticipantI had hoped the County would widen the ramp up onto the sidewalk at the corner at the Arlington Blvd end and cut down those bloody bushes but from the plan that does not look to be the case. Wondering now if the new ADA ramp and paved connector to the Arlington Blvd Trail is a viable alternative to playing frogger in the crosswalk with the cars in that right turn lane from Washington Blvd onto Pershing.

Here is the staff report, which states the draft policy.
By not changing the County Code this draft policy affirms the current shared use trail prohibition on e-scooters and ebikes, presumably including Capital Bikeshare Plus pedelecs, how are those riders supposed to legally safely cross the Potomac? Voting to prohibit riding 10mph speed limited e-scooters on sidewalks?

ParticipantAwful, 20 is no age to die, reminds me of the young student run down and killed in a crosswalk by a car exiting Washington circle in Foggy Bottom a couple of years ago. Perhaps DC DOT could look into speeding up the timer on the light outside of rush hours so people aren’t waiting so long for the walk signal. Ought the scooter companies pay to educate riders by subsidizing e-scootering classes? Something like the WABA City cycling class with new drills for riding an e-scooter on sidewalks, in traffic, and navigating traffic circles.

ParticipantBroke my leg, need an mri to confirm if I need surgery, and keep off the bike for 6 weeks. Looked on X-ray like when you hit the fender of your car and it makes a divot, so they may need to go into the top of my tibia to push the divot back out.

ParticipantToday, 5:35pm wooden trail section coming down off Roosevelt bridge slow speed probably not more than 10mph, I skidded on the slippery wood surface and fell, a cyclist following had to emergency stop and fell behind me, sorry and thank you for asking how I was afterwards. I did the splits so I have some muscle pain in my thighs and bruises on my left knee and right elbow.

ParticipantSobering article in the Post about e-scooters maintenance issues, I was surprised to read about the wide open throttle (WOT) problem, as an ebike owner I would have thought these scooters would have motor inhibitors on the brake levers to cut the power each time the rider pulls a brake lever. https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/scooter-use-is-rising-in-major-cities-so-are-trips-to-the-emergency-room/2018/09/06/53d6a8d4-abd6-11e8-a8d7-0f63ab8b1370_story.html?utm_term=.03f0390e5ab4

ParticipantMotivate have ebikes in San Francisco branded Ford GoBike+ recently they introduced an in house design that looks like a capital bikeshare bike with a front hub motor, feedback comments on Twitter are positive with riders liking the features shared with the standard bike, instead of the 3-speed IGH WTOP report it has an “infinity gear” presumably a CVT (https://wtop.com/dc-transit/2018/09/capital-bikeshare-rolls-out-electric-bikes-as-part-of-pilot-program/)

ParticipantBeautiful morning, warm, sunny, lots of people and pets out for exercise. On the MUP section of the Rt 50 trail under Ft Myer Heights was perhaps not the best place for the dog walker to stand in one lane and let their two pooches wander across the other lane entirely blocking the path with their leashes after I rang my bell twice from 200 & 100 yards back, I don’t love the smell of burning rubber in the morning.
