ParticipantWhen I went car-free, I had to adjust my shopping schedule, as one person described it, to a more European version. Two or three days a week, I’ll stop at the Giant across the street from where I work as I head home, filling up my two panniers. One reason I use Giant is they have the handheld UPC scanners, so I can scan items and fit them into my panniers as I shop. I don’t have to worry about getting to the checkout and finding that I can’t quite fit everything I bought into my bags.

I think the most unfortunate side effect of the dockless bike share will be the unexpected CaBi bills.
I ran an errand on Saturday, starting and finishing at the same CaBi station. I saw a CaBi left in the doorway of a building as I walked to the station. Since it was still there when I walked by after my errand, I decided to take pity on the person and docked for them. Of course, in the back of my mind, I was thinking, “Time for a joyride!”

Are you coming on a Doughnut Ride this weekend?e
The Baked Alaska donut was quite tasty!

I have ridden ebikes on the flat, around Hains Point, but I feel to really evaluate them better, I need to ride up some hills. AFAIK Jump bikes are not supposed to be taken out of the District. Can you suggest a hill in the District, of the sort where I would be absolutely uncomfortable riding a human powered bike with following traffic (note I am weak on hills) but where a Jump bike would make all the difference?
Here are a couple in Rock Creek Park that fit the bill
• Tilden Street – This has a bike lane
• Ridge Road – Currently closed to cars as part of the Beach Drive Rehabilitation project
• Ross Drive – Also closed to carsDCAKen

ParticipantI started commuting to work by bike back around 1990. I was living in Belle View, south of Alexandria and working in Old Town, so it was an easy two mile ride up the Mt Vernon trail. Riding my bike to work meant I didn’t have to worry about finding (and paying for) parking. Moving to Rosslyn stretched out the commute a little more, enough that I would work up a good sweat on the warm mornings. Working for a small consulting company meant no showers, so I had to use the damp cloth method to get presentable. I was a fair weather commuter in those days, put off by cold and/or wet conditions.
I changed jobs in 1992 and cycling up to the new office in White Flint proved to be too daunting for me, so it was back to the car. After about a year, my office was relocated to Silver Spring into a new building with showers and I got back into commuting by bike. Over the years, I’ve gotten to be much more of an all-weather cyclist. I still draw a line at temperatures below 25, though. I just can’t keep my extremities warm enough.
I’ve been riding up through Rock Creek Park for all these years, witnessing the gradual deterioration of Beach Drive until the harsh winters a few years ago left it with more patches than pavement. And the trail has suffered as well, both with the crumbling pavement and the influx of so many more trail users. I’ve been so happy to see the Beach Drive rehabilitation project finally moving forward after years of discussion.

Several people expressed interest in doing a DC loop this Sunday, so I’m posting this as an “open to all BAFS participants and friends” ride.
The plan: roll out from the Whole Foods in Pentagon City at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. (I’ll be there earlier if you want to join me for breakfast or coffee.) Take the Capital Crescent Trail up to Bethesda and stop for coffee — likely at Quartermaine, although I’m open to suggestions. Head east to hit the Sligo Creek and Northwest Branch Trails, with a lunch stop at Franklins in Hyattsville. Take the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail to Navy Yard and a beer/ice cream break. Circle back and finish in Pentagon City.
The route: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/1914792920. It’s about 45 miles, on a mix of trails and roads. There’s a gentle but steady climb up the CCT to Bethesda, and there’s one hilll on Forsythe that I had to walk the last time I did this route. (I’m terrible at hills.) Other than that, the route is pretty flat.
The details: social pace (12-15 mph), no drop. Bring a lock for the coffee/lunch/beer stops. The temperature is forecast to be about 35 degrees at the start but above 50 degrees by the end, so layer appropriately. If you’d like to join us for just part of the ride, you’re welcome to do that too.
Thanks for organizing a great ride yesterday! It was a fun time meeting everyone on the ride (and it was a big group!)

ParticipantIt’s great seeing the range of rides. Especially zoomed out to the global view.

ParticipantI’m Ken, and I’m a Freezing Saddles addict. I’ve taken part in all of them, getting the Bike Every Day award in two of the competitions. That said, I was on the last place team last year and I’m sure that we’ll do better than that this year.
I’ve been living here in DC for the past 30 years, so I’m almost a native. I would have thought my childhood in Illinois would have toughened me up for the really cold-weather cycling, but when it gets below 25, I just can’t keep my hands warm enough. I’m no stranger to sleaze rides on those frigid days.
My normal 20 mile commute takes me from Dupont Circle to Silver Spring via Rock Creek Park on my trusty Jamis Coda Elite. On the weekends, I’ll hop on my chrome Jamis Quest. Last year, I logged almost 3300 miles, but that was a little off my normal pace since I was off my bike for about six weeks in the fall.
It was great to meet everyone last night and I’m looking forward to getting to know all of you on some of the group rides we do.
