I can’t wait to see what 9 months of improvements for < 1mile of trail looks like. I assume since it's winter they'll dig a hole, then wait until spring to do anything else because it's too cold, then wait until summer because it's too wet? Or maybe they’re putting in a big slidewalk?
The timing and length seemed odd. I do think they are replacing at least one bridge that had been closed off for a while.

ParticipantThank you, komorebi, for organizing this again!
It’s fun to spot other participants and a great way to spread the word about FS.
I like the options you came up with for the poll.

ParticipantThe Washington Post reported that Phillip Peoples, who struck and killed Tom Hollowell, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter today.

ParticipantI liked the changes to the route this year. I heard similar sentiment from several folks I rode with. I thought the trade-off of missing Greenbelt Park (but really Greenbelt Road, Good Luck Road, and Campus Drive) for more miles on the ART was well worth it.

ParticipantI’m looking forward to the Cider Ride tomorrow! Thank you to all the great sponsors, like Proteus, for making it possible.
I was excited to see that two of the routes, the Honeycrisp and McIntosh, will pass through the cool, little town I live in, Riverdale Park.
I know WABA has some great pit stops planned, and many of you know the area as well or better than I do; but, I wanted to share some ideas for those of you that may be looking for an unofficial pit stop along the way or for a future visit:
Riverdale Park Station (around mile 14.5 on the McIntosh Route) – includes a Whole Foods and several fast casual dining options.
Town Center Market (just before mile 38 on the Honeycrisp Route, just off the Trolley Trail of the McIntosh Route after passing the Riverdale MARC station) – has one of the best craft beer and wine selections in the DC area, including 32 rotating taps ( https://www.towncentermarket.net/ ). The nearby Dumm’s serves pizza and subs.
Franklins (about mile 38.5 of the Honeycrisp Route and 16 of the McIntosh Route) – a local institution with a brewery, restaurant, and eclectic toy store (http://www.franklinsbrewery.com/ ).
Vigilante Coffee (not directly on the route, but about a block away from Franklin’s across Route 1/Baltimore Avenue) – roasts fantastic coffee and has built a really cool café (http://vigilantecoffee.com/ ).
Several great options along the section of the routes along Baltimore Ave, which is the gap in trail network between the Trolley Trail and Anacostia Tributary Trail network that WABA has been advocating to connect, include:
Streetcar 82 Brewery – a new brewery that opened this summer (https://www.facebook.com/Streetcar82/ ; https://dcist.com/story/18/08/15/streetcar-82-brewing-offers-new-hub/ )
Pizza Paradiso (https://www.eatyourpizza.com/ ) – a great regional chain that shares a building with an arts nonprofit
Maryland Meadworks – a new meadery that opened in October and just posted it will be offering free samples tomorrow (https://www.facebook.com/marylandmeadworks/ ; http://hyattsvillelife.com/mead-in-hyattsville-longtime-resident-creates-buzz-with-opening-of-maryland-meadworks/ )
Shortcake Bakery (https://shortcakebakery.com/) – an amazing bakery.
There are many other great options, but I thought I’d share a few suggestions that may pique someone’s curiosity.
Enjoy the ride!

ParticipantThank you, Judd and LhasaCM. The summaries and suggestions are helpful. Maybe a writing campaign in January would help.

ParticipantThank you, Judd. I regret missing this. The bag restrictions for the Capitol and traveling the next day made it challenging. Aside from monitoring the WABA advoacy alerts, are there any actions we should be taking?

ParticipantNice! I’m glad to hear there’s a silver lining. Looking forward to seeing the new bike.

Thanks for the clarification.

ParticipantDid anyone see any signs of the enforcement blitz that was reported as starting today in DC?
I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary this morning.

ParticipantNice! What a great set up.

Note well, a collision CAUSED by something other than speed can be aggravated by speed. Also I think (no data handy) that running red lights is more common when cars are driven at higher speeds.
At their advocacy trainings, WABA provides some useful charts on the probability that a cyclist will be seriously injured or killed by a driver based on speed. I couldn’t locate the source WABA used quickly, but ProPublica posted something similar for pedestrians: https://www.propublica.org/article/unsafe-at-many-speeds
Consistent with the data cited by WABA , the ProPublica article mentioned, “The second main point is that once cars reach a certain speed (just above 20 mph), they rapidly become more deadly. According to Tefft’s data, a person is about 70 percent more likely to be killed if they’re struck by a vehicle traveling at 30 mph versus 25 mph.”
