CaBi does a great job letting users report defective or broken bicycles…A way to easily report malfunctioning docks and especially offline stations would be nice.
I absolutely agree.

Consider a way to let users know that a station cannot be used at a given time by “greying it out” on the app.
This would be fantastic.

The process which leads to the phone call goes like this: [1] a station is down but I don’t know it’s down; [2] I dock, and the bike locks up, but the trip is not registered as having ended. [3] I call in because the clock is still running and I am subject to overage fees. [4] Depending on how experienced the agent is, they take 30 seconds to a few minutes to check on the problem. [5] They always come back with: “Yes, it appears this station has been disconnected. We have alerted out technicians.” (I have had this same interaction several times in the past week.)
This is what happened to me on my return trip. I docked and got a green light but the timer on the app kept running. I unlocked and docked a second time. When I called, the customer service representative said that because I got a green light when I docked, that I was good to go and that the trip would update when the station reset. When I got an email alert two hours later that the bike was still out and another email a few minutes later that the bike had been docked across town, I called customer service again. They had a record of my first call and cancelled out any extra charges.
I first started to notice stations out more frequently around September.

All in all, it was about as painless an experience as you could ask for.
I’m glad you are okay! That sounds like a terrifying experience.

ParticipantI had to call twice about an issue regarding my return trip. During the second call, the CaBi representative said they were having an unusually high number of technical issues today.

I expressed precisely that concern on twitter – there is not yet a funding source definitively identified for either the RR bridge of the bike/ped bridge, so it was my concern the RR bridge could be built and the bike/ped bridge deferred indefinitely due to lack of funds.
I have since learned that one of the environmental issues created by the new RR bridge is loss of park space where the RR bridge takes NPS property. Apparently NPS considers the bike ped bridge to be mitigation for that (the bike ped/bridge will presumably be owned by NPS?) and the Environmental Impact Statement would say so, ergo the bike/ped bridge would legally have to be completed along with the new RR bridge. IIUC.
Thank you for the additional info! That helps clarify the inclusion of the bike bridge in the section on potential mitigation options.

Thank you for the info, streetsmarts. The materials they posted from the meeting were helpful.
The selected option, with the wider space between the bike/pedestrian path and rail traffic, seems preferable. However, should we be concerned that since the bike/pedestrian bridge will be a separate structure that there may be a greater risk it doesn’t get built?

ParticipantOrganizing and balancing local teams sounds challenging.
If it simply means a change in the types of gatherings and opportunities for revelry, as Emm and cvcalhoun suggested, I support not having local teams this year.
Last year was my first FS. My team was mostly from Maryland, but we were spread far enough apart that frequent gatherings were challenging.

I’d prefer the Thursday the 10th. Might as well stay late (happy 4+ hours), and I’d rather do that on a Thursday than a Monday.
I agree with Josh that Thursday would be preferable.

To be honest, I’m wary of allowing people to submit other information via the form. The reason is that I already end up being the recipient of all sorts of questions that really should go to other people. My only function is registration. Yet people ask me when happy hours will be, how to fix a problem on the website, how to set up a pointless prize, etc.–none of which I am in a position to know. So this year, I will have a complete list of who is in charge of what go into the confirmation e-mail, in the hope that I won’t end up being in the middle quite so often. If I allowed people to submit other information via the form, then I would have to keep track of each registration as it arrived, and direct any questions to the appropriate person myself, which would rather undermine that effort.
Ok. That makes sense.

ParticipantThe draft form looks great. Maybe consider adding a text box for other information people may want to share. Most people won’t use it, but you may get additional details (e.g., other good ideas).
As a first time participant last year, I thought the instructions that you all provided regarding registration were clear and comprehensive.

Are there any DC area groups participating that would welcome additional riders?
I, and the folks I’m riding with, will probably sign up for Brancel Charters. I had a good experience with them in 2017.
I recognize that’s not really what you’re looking for AFHokie, but I thought I’d recommend Brancel for anyone considering RAGBRAI without joining a group.

I can’t wait to see what 9 months of improvements for < 1mile of trail looks like. I assume since it's winter they'll dig a hole, then wait until spring to do anything else because it's too cold, then wait until summer because it's too wet? Or maybe they’re putting in a big slidewalk?
The timing and length seemed odd. I do think they are replacing at least one bridge that had been closed off for a while.
