Alas, the Arlington map that shows snow removal seems to “lump” all non-Arlington responsibilities as VDOT

    https://arlgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/PublicInformation/index.html?appid=217dfb1423b54b21a885091305a03679

It shows VDOT clearing the GWMP and the cobblestone section of Memorial Drive. It seems that Arlington was a bit cavalier in the coding.

I contacted Arlington, which informed me that it’s NPS jurisdiction. I called NPS and reported it. Fingers crossed that they fix it soon.

WTF? Wasn’t this the location where an ACPD officer told a cyclist to ride in the gutter pan because of the road width just a few months ago?

But the Arlington road condition map

    https://arlgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=015b6df228b94a0f882f4cb19df24ccf

shows Marshall as not having a condition recorded, so it might belong to the NPS.

So Arlington announced in April that the beg buttons had been set to automatic, meaning peds and cyclists didn’t have to push the buttons. Well, in the past couple of weeks, the buttons finally were labeled telling potential button pushers that they didn’t have to actually do so. Some are labeled so it is pretty obvious and others are merely labeled. Putting the label 18 inches above the button is probably not going to achieve the goal of eliminating the button pushing.

What will the longer-term project entail? Are they burying the overhead power transmission lines?

It was mentioned in a civic association meeting in April 2019 and I captured

“In a civic association meeting this week, Dominion presented on the closure of the power facility in Alexandria (east of US 1 near Shoppers), removal of the power poles in Four Mile Run near US 1, and upgrades to the substation at the foot of Eads.

They are going to take the underground feed which comes up near the Shoppers and bring it right into the Eads substation, and replace some of the equipment in the substation.

This will necessitate some closures of the FMR Trail just west of US 1 by the substation. “

So I’d expect that there will be a fair amount of work going on around the substation. Given the power cables will have to be moved before the poles can be removed, this is likely to take a while. My conversation with the Dominion staff today led me to believe it was a couple of years out. I’d like to think there is time to plan the detour in coordination with the Alexandria Bike and Ped Advisory Commission, Arlington’s BAC and PAC, and the local community. The detour could, if we make the investment, be around the Porsche dealer (if the sidewalk on Glebe from Eads to US1 is improved).

    State tuned.

I believe the closure near Mt Vernon is going to move east to where the FMR Trail intersects Eads. I had a good conversation with the contractor on site and a couple of phone conversations with the Dominion manager.

Combination of sloppy planning, poor coordination, and weak execution.

Lucky this will only suck for a day. The contractor did seem sensitive to the need for a good trail patch. Something to look at tomorrow.

Rode out to Columbia Island to see the flyby. Interesting that the Park Police had the lot at Gravelly Point blocked off but seemed cool (maybe just resigned) to people pulling off the GWMP onto the grass.

Yes bicycles are prohibited from the roadway, see section 4.30(a) on page 15 of https://www.nps.gov/gwmp/learn/management/upload/GWMP-Compendium-508.pdf

The crappy definitions may give cover for some. Extracted from Page 2 (my emphasis added):

Bicycle means every device propelled solely by human power upon which a person or persons may ride on land, having one, two, or more wheels, except a manual wheelchair.

Motor Vehicle means every vehicle that is self-propelled and every vehicle that is propelled by electric power, but not operated on rails or upon water, except a snowmobile and a motorized wheelchair.

Scooters and e-bikes – to the roadway!

Caveat – this should not be taken as legal advice and if you try to school the Park Police, they will likely not be amused.

I rode Memorial Bridge this morning (downstream side) with no drama. The shitshow of the 14th St Bridge is a completely different issue.

Arlington Police were doing some level of enforcement along the Crystal Drive bike lanes. I saw this officer servicing one motorist when I went in to dinner and came out to see him servicing another.

    Sweet!

I have been there to see the 4 July fireworks. It is packed with people!!!

I went there several years. The trick I used was to park my pickup there (in a ideal spot for viewing) with some folding chairs in the cab. Go up before the fireworks and set the chairs up in the bed of the truck. Easy peasy, seating a couple of feet above the crowds on the sidewalk.

Six or seven years ago, we (me and a NPS engineer) moved hotspot 6 away from the split and closer to the river. In addition to choking that ramp to one lane, it allowed motorists to focus on the split and then pay attention to the crosswalk. That seemed to work, likely more a result of the road diet.

I only use that crosswalk occasionally but think that crosswalk gives me a fighting chance. The crosswalk at hotspot is still terrifying and I avoid it as often as possible.
