So I did my BTWD outreach part this morning. I was leaving the hotel in San Juan Puerto Rico at the crack o’dawn and while I’m getting my coffee for the trip to the office, I see a gent in the lobby wearing a BTWD ’15 shirt. I accosted (gently) him and let him know that registration for BTWD ’18 is open now. He took it well.

Rode Crystal City Connector and north on the MVT across the 14th St Bridge right at sunup (hybrid with 35 mm, no studs)

A bit of the Crystal City Connector is single track (from the bike counter to the GWMP underpass)

The two northern bridges on the MVT at DCA were crunchy with ice chunks. I Flintstoned.

MVT was almost universally clear, with a small amount of single track and only one patch (maybe 8-10 feet) of glaze ice from refreeze (near Gravelly Point)

14th St Bridge was clear except for about 100 feet on the DC end where I Flintstoned.

DC along the Mall was clear and dry.

With the sun, much of the issues I noted will be short lived.

A number of years ago, Mayor Marion Barry was asked for his plan for snow removal. Legend has it that his response was “Spring”

I suppose the follow up question might be, “What is plan B?”

This ramp up from the road makes any of the ramps we have pale in comparison.

Seems to have something to do with the Corps of Engineers releasing 90,000 cubic feet per second of Mississippi River water through the Bonnet Carre spillway into Lake Pontchartrain.

This is normally the dry side of the spillway.

Rod Smith’s bike sighted about 1230 today without Rod on 21st Street NW. He must have been inside doing a delivery.

complaining about some howls coming from the other side of the fence and spooking the horses at their stables by the reflecting pool. Sounds like a job for a frozemon hunter.

    Or possibly a stable genius.

There was a patch of snowy ice on the MVT between the 14th Street Bridge and the turn off for the MVT up to the bridge. A lady rider had just gone down about 1830 (she was OK). Going to be slick in the morning.

As much as the environmental engineer in me loves to see these photos about toilets and what can/cannot go in them, we are neglecting the war on cars. To that end …..

I’m down in Orlando and report that the few bike lanes all seem to be ice free. Alas, I am confined to a steel box.
