Spokes does not recycle tires, just tubes.
Thanks. Follow up question then to everyone — Besides Phoenix Bikes using them for art projects, is there any place to recycle bike tires? Or is it not worth the effort for anyone involved since they don’t have the same steel banding as automotive radial tires?
I’ve thrown out a few before, but I just feel guilty doing so. One of the many reasons I ride my bike is out of environmental concern, and just tossing tires in the dumpster seems wrong somehow.

I haven’t noticed any significant progress on the project nor seen anyone working on this for the past week. This is week three of a project that I was told was going to take four weeks to complete. I should note that the “desirees” appear to have completed their restructuring of the fence and have marked out their new trail through the project site.
I do agree that from the trail level view, progress does seem stalled, and maybe it is.
I will add that I’ve been commuting more along Potomac Avenue up to Crystal City and then over to the MVT the last several weeks just to mix things up (I live in Del Ray and was getting tired of the same schlog to the end of Commonwealth and along 4MR). Anyway, what I wanted to say is that earlier this week (Tuesday?) there were a lot of contractor vehicles and and a few cement trucks at the top of the site (probably around 9 AM). Not sure what they were up to and the results of their work may not be evident from trail level, but there were workers out there. I presume they were doing something useful to advance the project.

If they don’t, give it to Pheonix Bikes for art projects.
Good to know. I have hoarded them and have at least five or six at home. I keep meaning to figure out how to recycle them or find some other way for them to be useful to someone. Might have to plan a weekend ride that takes me past Phoenix soon so I can dispose if them. Thanks!

Nice stem cap! 😎
My org (a non-profit near the Mall) simply decided to shut down for the day yesterday. We don’t have telecommuting as an option. Management suggested salaried employees take something home that we could work on during the day and not treat it as a day off. I’m guessing few of us actually did anything yesterday. If I were single, I would have taken the day to go for a VERY long bike ride. I decided instead to enjoy the day at home with my wife and son and managed to watch the last half of yesterday’s Vuelta stage on an online feed during my kid’s morning nap.

ParticipantJust posted a comment based on dasgeh’s and included specific reference to child trailers. Thanks for the heads up.

ParticipantMy Surly LHT was set up with a dynohub and lights, and I miss them dearly. I will be missing theme especially dearly now that I’m back into grad school classes and will be riding at night more again. Plus the days are getting shorter.
Anyway, all of that is to say that I STRONGLY recommend a good dynamo lighting setup if you’re thinking about it. I had an Alfine hub, Busch & Muller Lumotec Cyo N Plus headlight, and a B&M rear light. I couldn’t really feel the difference/friction from the hub when the lights were on, so I often ran my lights as daytime running lights and regularly got compliments on how bright they were, even from a distance during the day. I loved my setup and hope to replicate it soon on my new bike.
If you’re looking for easy USB charging capabilities, the new B&M Luxos light (brighter and better coverage than previous lights, too) has an option with built in USB charging capabilities, but of course the Luxos costs more than previous lights and the USB charger version costs more than the one without.

I’ve gone down to the Occoquan/Woodbridge area a few times now and want to know if there are better road bike friendly routes that I could be taking to get there from Alexandria (let’s assume the start point is King Street Metro) along with recommendations for roads to explore down there.
The route I generally use is here: http://www.strava.com/activities/75430262
It mostly uses bike lanes, off-street trails, and neighborhood streets, save for the sections of Lorton Rd near Furnace Rd (I don’t ride the CCT on my road bike). Any ideas?
There’s always US Bicycle Route 1. (see this map.) It looks like it takes the same route as you around Lorton… things kind of bottleneck there, including in terms of good cycling routes, so there is only so much you can do, but the route down there from OT Alexandria is different, and arguably more scenic.
All this is with the caveat that I haven’t ridden this myself… only researched it as part of a possible multi-day bike trip to family in Hampton Roads, but I think it’s part of the ACA’s Atlantic Coast route, so it would have that endorsement, too. I assume others here have ridden it, however, and may be able to offer some comments on it.

To the gent riding up CCT this morning wearing the polka dot jersey. Apologies if I am mistaken, but I believe you are in violent conflict with Rule #16.
At least he was riding UP the CCT and not down it to Georgetown, where his wife was waiting with the car to pick him up.

ParticipantWe checked this one out of the Alexandria Public Library for our now one year old some time ago. He really liked the illustrations and it was one of his favorite books out of that batch (and mine, too, obviously)

So a new cycling outfit only costs $300 instead of the usual $450? Sweet! 😮 [/sarcasm]
Personally, I think I’d rather get a nice new dynohub and dynamo lights setup for that price tag… or be two-thirds of the way towards buying a new Surly LHT frame. But that’s just my personal preference. 😎

ParticipantBesides my missed connection, it was a really nice ride in to work. The weather is absolutely spectacular!!! Such a treat IN AUGUST to barely break a sweat on the ride in to work.

Report it to the Alexandria police!!
I plan on it. It used to be possible to post incident reports on the APD website. While they still have the incident report form online, it asks you to select from very specific incident categories, and none of them have to do with traffic or road safety. I’ll probably call non-emergency number to make a report at lunch.

ParticipantYou: Driver of black Ford Explorer (VA plates JFN 5323… yes you made such a first impression that I remembered your license plate) who buzzed me this morning on Potomac Avenue in Alexandria
Me: The cyclist whom you almost hit and whom you thought you were teaching a lesson to by driving by with about a foot between your mirror and my head
We exchanged middle fingers as you watched me and looked at me in your rear view mirror after you passed. I had half a mind to do something to the back of your car when I came up behind it at the red light a couple hundred feet up the road but was too shy. Let’s get together some time. Seems like we’d get along really well…
