ParticipantWell, whoever took those pictures of Bike Santa, he (and his minions in the form of family) left the following items at my house. I’m a happy cyclist!

In case you can’t tell from the picture, that’s a mini-platform front rack, some studded 26″ Nokian tires, and a Brooks B17 saddle. (Glad I still have the tin of Proofide from my last saddle.) 😎

ParticipantThird to last morning commute for 2013. I’ll be commuting next Monday and Tuesday as well. Otherwise, I’m off work until 2014. 2014?! Really?!?!?!
I enjoyed the ride in. Pumped up the tires for the first time in a few weeks this AM. Man what a difference 10-15 PSI make when your’e running 2″ tires and the 15 PSI takes you from 50 to 65. Smooth ride.
I donned my rain cape based on the sound of rain out the window at home and the looks of the radar. When I first stepped outside, I briefly entertained the notion of taking it back off, but I’m glad I didn’t. Rain picked up again on the way in, though nothing like the torrential downpour I just saw outside. Glad I missed that one.
Hopefully my next commute in (Dec 30) will incorporate a few bike-related goodies off my wish list. I promise, Santa, I’ve been good!

ParticipantThanks. I’m largely over it now, even if I am still bitter. It was stolen in the spring, so the sting’s not as bad as it was initially.
On the bright side, trying to spread the word about my stolen bike was what first led me here to this forum, so that’s good at least.

Yes I know it is 60 degrees out there right now and it will be 70 on Sunday but it MAY snow again and if it does you may need studs:

ParticipantI was at the National Festivus Pole, er, Xmas Tree this evening when I had a Dirst sighting… on the tandem with WABA sign in tow in a convoy of about five other bikes heading east. Nice night for a ride.

Got a response from the NPS in under 10 minutes! They are on the mission!
Hoping for a less eventful commute tonight.
AWESOME! Thank you!

That branch must be multi-lingual. It said “thump” to me when I discovered it as well last night.

^^^Yes, that branch almost took me out too last night! A last second head jerk saved me.
Glad I wasn’t the only one then. I thought I must have really been in a daze and particularly inattentive, but I guess that was more to it than that.

There’s an option for “Fast hybrid” but not for “heavy, tank-like hybrid.”
Yeah, the categories are somewhat incomplete. My problem is that that they don’t have one for drop bar-equipped MTB. I think I arrived at my 10 calling it a touring bike, since for all intents and purposes, my frankenbike is similar in geometry to a modern 26″ tourer, though I could be a nine depending on how I classify what I wear.
For all the Cat 6’ers out there, this can make you feel better about being passed, as long as the person passing you is obviously of a lower FCN.

ParticipantLast night –
You: Unseen low-hanging branch along the sidewalk/trail along Ohio Dr around the Tidal Basin on my way to 14th St Bridge.
Me: Busy enjoying the snowflakes mixed in with the rain, paying attention to what was on the sidewalk.
You: Thwack!
Me: Glad I was wearing my helmet and glasses. That could really have hurt.
You II (NPS): Please keep the trees properly trimmed so that they’re not likely to hit cyclists and peds in the head as they go that way.cyclingfool

1) it’s a commute, not a race
Actually, it’s a race with well established rules, an entire pecking order, and even a Twitter handle.

Given my frankenbike, my FCN is a little difficult to ascertain, but I’m somewhere between 10 and 12. What’s yours?

If you are trying to hold 300 watts, I’d recommend the higher wattage bulbs (like 150s) so you don’t have to hold as many.
Better yet, get compact fluorescents so that 300 watts is actually only 60 or 100.
CF bulbs… the e-bikes of lightbulbs?

Del Ray Patch article, dated Nov. 21
I’d seen that article and something along the same lines from the city, perhaps from Carrie to the BPAC mailing list. Must have been a brain fart when I typed spring instead of winter. That’s one Christmas wish 1/2 granted… since it’ll be coming sooner rather than later.
