Never mind. Just got word that FMR trail near the water main break is open, despite the road closure.

I live right across King Street from you. Though I am not a Hokie.
You don’t seem to be syncing up on the BAFS site either. Maybe you’re already working on this, and El Capitan is “harassing” people. In any case, we only have 7 riders synced up so far.
Chris Ra: 502 points (12 days, 382 miles)
Chris T: 326 points (11 days, 216 miles)
Nick W: 279 points (13 days, 149 miles)
Jona E: 256 points (11 days, 146 miles)
Jon G: 214 points (13 days, 84 miles)
Eric We: 180 points (10 days, 80 miles)
Ken N: 93 points (6 days, 33 miles)We’ll be solidly middle of the pack if we get another couple riders’ miles added onto our total, since other teams around us have 9 riders contributing miles on the site.

ParticipantThat’s my standard route, too. I also go down West or Fayette if I’m going somewhere just west of Rte. 1. My post above was about longer distance travel from farther north, liek Crystal City or Potomac Yard which would ave one riding down Potomac Avenue and Main Line Blvd or the side path. Completion of this link will eliminate the need to divert a couple blocks over to Mt Vernon or to navigate Rte. 1 or its sidewalks over the tracks and back down to side streets in North Old Town.

But IE is the number one browser for downloading other browsers.
Only if you’re using Windows, which I do, at least a lot of the time. Ubuntu users get Firefox standard with install. 😎

ParticipantYeah, I rode back that way on Sunday to check out what things looked like from the GWMS parking lot/end of Main Line Blvd side. Things are taking shape nicely. It’ll be nice when that’s complete. It’ll really simplify trips from Crystal City and Potomac Yard to Old Town, especially the non-Waterfront part of Old Town.

Been there. Sux. Sorry.
At least where I am, they eventually wised up enough to include Firefox standard and allow some employees to ask for alternate browsers to be installed, so I am able to use Chrome, too.

ParticipantWear what you will. I wear baggy stuff all the time. I’m sure it slows me down, but:
1. The world doesn’t want to see me in lycra. Neither does my wife, so spending money on it would earn an immediate slap on the wrist.
2. I find it really comfortable. All that said, I have clipless pedals. For me clipless is not really about speed, though I think it might make me a small fraction of an MPH faster. For me, the best part of clipless is knowing my foot won’t slip off the pedal if it’s wet out or I do something silly. I used to use toe clips/cages w/ straps, but with my wide feet they didn’t always play nicely with all my shoes. SPDs were just way more comfortable. I may at some point try pedals w/ SPD on one side, platform on the other, so I can more easily hop on the bike in regular sneakers or sandals, but for now, my cheap-o Shimano M520 SPD pedals are where it’s at for me.

This. (http://www.aerostich.com/thermometer-clip.html)
The thing I miss most about switching to GPS and not using a traditional bike computer anymore (most recently had had the Planet Bike Protege 9) is having a thermometer to refer to during rides. Came across this little guy. Plan to clip it onto handlebars so I can know how freezing my saddle is.
Arrived today. Snapped right on to the bars. Time will tell how accurate and reactive the thermometer is.

Last year I had a great time and all my team members were awesome but I never actually got out on a group ride or even to a happy hour. I know, I’m a terrible Freezing Saddles participant (in terms of the social aspect).
That makes two of us, and now that I’m working three days a week at my primary (now part time) job and as many other days as possible at a second job, I’m guessing my availability for happy hours will be minimal this year, despite my hopes and wishes to the contrary.
You put in some good miles, though. More, certainly, than I’ll find time to manage. #SorryIfImAnAnchor

Nice, a fellow Hokie
As a December 2014 (yep, last month) Masters program grad of the NCR Campus – Alexandria location, that makes three Hokies.
(I did undergrad at AU, but we didn’t even have a football team, so it’s nice to have an alma mater now that does.)

ParticipantI signed up with the Strava team today. We’re still minus a couple people, but, they, like me, may not have seen the info in this thread about the Strava team. Chris Tank mentioned it in comments to me on a Strava ride he’d posted and I commented on, which is the only reason I knew to go sign up. I hadn’t been on the forum for a couple days.

Keep in mind a few things about studded tires. 1) It is a good idea to break them in a little before heading out on the ice. Riding them on pavement for 15-20 miles at a mellow pace to help set the studs into the rubber casing of the tire.
Is there anything other than a mellow pace on studs?! For all my efforts, I never seem to achieve such a pace…
