ParticipantI can say from a few times I ended up driving (instead of biking :-o) from Del Ray to my current workplace in Clarendon over the last couple months that work does seem to have progressed significantly with fewer construction barrels/cones and straighter lane marker alignments.

Participantsome TJ’s cheese cracker bites which I swear have crack in them!)
I work at Trader Joe’s at present, and one of my main job responsibilities is opening each box of cracker bites and sprinkling on the crack, so you are correct.
On a serious note, nice looking trip and pics. Life has thrown me some curveballs the last several months, but I still harbor hopes of making it out for a night or two on the C&O with my bike, a tent, and possibly my 3 year old son.

A moose once bit my sister. Mind you, moose bites can be quite nasty.

14th St. Br. was… entertaining? All i know is Topper Shutt is a liar. The windiest it’s been while I’ve ridden across the 14th St. Br. was sustained 30, gusts 45-55.
Today was worse than that day, despite Topper telling me sustained 15-20, gusts 30-35.
I didn’t hear what Topper Shutt said, but I will concur that today was about as windy I’ve ever ridden in across the 14th Street Bridge in my now six years of year-round commuting.
Gravelly Point was no picnic either. There were three riders including myself in a line, all separated by a couple hundred feet, all in the drops or hunched over for better aero. All of us were pedaling away to maintain 7-8 mph into the wind, watching as rcannon said, waves, yes, waves with whitecaps and all, on the Potomac.
It was easier going up the hill/ramp onto the 14th St Bridge than it was riding in the flat portions of the trail that preceded it.

That would be like ten or fifteen, right? 2000 pounds.
Indeed. Exactly 13.986 Vincenzo Nibalis or 15.625 Nairo Quintanas.

Xtracycle and Bike Friday (they make the Haul-a-Day) are both located on the West Coast, and I hear long tails are EXTREMELY popular in the bikey cities out there. I would expect you could find a rental/borrow that would be totally worth the saving the cost and hassle of shipping.
Let me know if you need help contacting people.
A related thought… check spinlister.

ParticipantYou might consider looking into the Amtrak Express Shipping option if you can go without the bike for a few days and there’s an Amtrak station where you’re going, though it has its drawbacks.

The link above is the only thing I’ve really heard about it, but at least they were apparently gentle with that bike as it made its way from San Diego to DC. Like I said, probably not perfect, but might be worth a little research. Just a thought.

ParticipantThat’s cool. I saw something about the IC Trail over the summer and thought it would make for one heck of a European bike tour when completed. Don’t think I’ll be able to make the presentation, but thanks for sharing.

Winds are shifting during the day and are forecast to be from the South this evening. Thereby possibly giving me the Holy Grail of bike commuting, tailwinds in both directions.
Or if you’re me, the seemingly inevitable bike commuting situation – headwinds in both directions.
I shouldn’t grumble, though… at least I had the wind mostly at my back last night. I felt a deep sympathy for those people I passed who were heading north on the MVT last night.

MVT and 14th St. Bridge are clear. Even most of the Canada geese droppings have washed away (but there are still faded green blotches on the asphalt).
Clear with the exception of this spot on the MVT where the big puddles collect (and freeze when it gets cold). The patch of ice there is small and easy enough to ride over (at least today it was), but isn’t there anything that the NPS can do to improve drainage at this spot so that this doesn’t happen? There’s anything from a puddle to the sixth Great Lake if there’s anything more than the most gentle of mists. Or do they actively want puddles to collect there since it’s a multi-use path and toddlers want the opportunity to “splash puddle” (as my son would say) and ice skaters want a temporary 20’x10′ rink?
cyclingfool
ParticipantOr, to use a nautical term, tacking. My commute is due south into Alexandria. With the wind eventually mostly at my back once I get on the MVT, I’m thinking of throwing up a spinnaker and coasting home.
