No recommendations on bags, but you might consider taking most of your work clothing (suits, shirts, whatever you might be forced to wear) to work and leaving it there if possible. There may be a dry cleaner nearby where you could drop off/pick up some stuff once or twice a week over lunch, e.g., and you could potentially not have to ferry the items back and forth at all. Just a thought and a strategy I know is often employed.

    This.

You: Guy riding bike on the MVT just north of the Crystal City Connector.
Me: Right behind you after turning onto the trail, waiting patiently to pass you while a couple cyclists came by from the other direction.
    You: Smoking.
Me: Lungful of second hand smoke. 😡 Not what I expect when out on the trail. I’m an ex-smoker. I get it. I try not to be a rabid anti-smoker. But, seriously, please NOT on the trail.

Ugh. I’ve seen you sitting on the side of the trail smoking before. I’ve given you a pass on that. I’m glad you ride your bike. But people don’t even have to breathe your smoke at a bar anymore. They certainly don’t expect it while riding their bike to work.

Mine went on my helment. :)

Had a first today on the ride in. Just after I turned onto the MVT from the Crystal City Connector I found myself right behind a guy I’d seen sitting on the side of the trail in the past smoking. Well, today, he was smoking while riding down the trail. So, I got a lungful of his second hand smoke as I waited for cyclists going the opposite direction to pass before I could pass smoker dude. Ugh.

Otherwise, voting was fun, and the weather was damn near perfect!

Free Kaci Hickox! (though her morning ride was certainly less than 21 days)

I do not remember the source, but I think I know this by heart now. Your odds of being killed as a cyclist are higher per mile, but lower per hour, than as a motorist. because despite ELITE cyclists, and traffic jams, average speed for drivers is still quite a lot higher than for cyclists. So if you are looking at a 10 mile ride vs a 10 mile drive you are safer driving, but looking a lifestyle with a 1 hour drive vs a 1 hour ride (and adjust where you live accordingly) riding is better.

That’s my memory of the interpretation of the generally accepted universe of statistics on this from my transportation planning coursework.

I’m afraid that article does not compensate for exposure rate. If the average person (over the entire population) spent as much time commuting on a bicycle as commuting in a car that would be a proper implication.

Great idea. That way you can make a drinking game out of it, with hits for “scofflaw”, “lycra” and “infrastructure”.

I just noticed the speed gauge on the CCT. When you accelerate to 20, a white light goes on. What happens at 25? Does a laser shoot you dead?

Photobucket’s blocked at work, but if that picture is anything like what I saw going home, it was marvelous. Brilliant orange sun eked out a few minutes of shining between the departure of the clouds and the end of the day.

My ride home last night was made better by the fact that, unlike the night before, I hadn’t forgotten my glasses-mounted Take a Look mirror. I can ride w/o it, of course, but there’s something comforting about being able to see behind me with one quick glance, even on the trail.

Ditto on the loop that peter mentioned. Both my Radbot and my Superflash attach there easily. Fortunately I haven’t lost a light yet, but I can’t say I haven’t been warned now. It’s usually daylight when I’m riding with my kid in my trailer, so I haven’t worried too much about lights.

Depending on your trailer type and how much of the metal frame is exposed, you may be able either use seat post type light mounts or engineer a way using clamps or zip ties to secure another couple light mounting points on the trailer itself.
